The Chris Johnson Hype machine (2 Viewers)

I believe it's a catastrophic mistake to assume Johnson can't handle 20 touches a game because of his size. I don't like underweight RBs, but CJ is heavy/strong enough at 5'11" 200 to be a feature back (especially the way they'll use him). Don't like him because he doesn't have vision or some other reason(s)...I have no problem with that (even though I think you're wrong, LOL).

This discussion reminds me a lot of the Frank Gore debate around here a couple years ago. A lot of people didn't like Gore for one reason or another, but if you actually trusted your eyes, you knew he was going to be a good one. Same with CJ.

That said, I'm not saying he'll be Superman out of the gate. I believe him & White will initially be in some sort of RBBC. CJ's production could possibly be somewhat spotty early on (depending on how well their offense is playing, as a whole). Eventually, I expect CJ to work his way into the feature role sometime before the end of the season (but could be much sooner). He'll be a 1st round pick next year, IMO.

That vince young play at 50 swconds shows the impact of a guy like CJ - He drew 2 defenders and made the middle of the field wide open for VY. These 2 players compliment eachother well.

 
Just drafted him as my RB4!!! I'm onboard!!

I agree with an earlier poster about trusting your eyes...I was never bought into RBush hype - but did buy into AP hype last year based on how he ran in college and I'm buying into CJ after the preseason based on how he runs... he's not always looking to get outside to turn the corner like Reggie...he's more like AP in that he'll run into a hole and come out the other side like he was shot out of a cannon.... :boxing:

Exactly what I've been thinking for weeks. They will draw @ least one defender away from each other on most plays.

You really think he's taking the load away from Lendale? Drafted both yesterday, assuming Lendale is the one to start until proven wrong....

From what I've seen out of TEN so far, stacking the box and making VY beat you seems like a solid game plan.

I like CJ. I've got him in all of my leagues. But I only drafted him because these leagues give 12 points for each 20+ yard TD and 24 points for each 20+ yard rec. TD. Under that scoring system, he's a good flex play I think.

But for standard scoring? As a starter? I don't see it. Not this year, anyway.

Just my opinion, but stacking the box also makes it easier for VY to beat you with his legs.

Agreed. But most of us who are pumped about CJ3 are talking about PPR scoring and in that format...yes stud potential big time.

I'm on board. Every day I get more excited to see him tear up the NFL with his speed. Len-whale doesn't stand a chance.

You can knock his size, whatever you want. The guy has been a better blocker than White so far this season, and a better catcher. The guy is the complete package and quite possibly the biggest steal in the first round of the draft. He'll emerge as the best RB from this class.

You can't be that fast and NOT be a factor. He's much better overall talent wise than Reggie Bush in my opinion. He's the complete package, maybe a little small. But with Lendale also in the mix, he isn't going to be expected to carry the load 100%

You'll regret that move ;) I now have Felix Jones in every league I'm in, and Chris Johnson in 3 leagues I'm in.

 
Picked him up in the 6th round of my 14 teamer... PPR. In all honesty; I have not seen the guy play yet. I've heard of his speed, and his great hands - but lets be realistic - talking touches how many can owners expect to see a game reasonably? 15? 20?

 
Hope there is some separation between White and CJ come week 6, as I've got both, and may need the roster spot due to their bye week.

Fisher has said he would like to get 40 touches a game for the RBs. And just recently he said that they might start the season 50/50 between White and Johnson. So.......theoretically he could start the season getting 15-20.And yeah, I'm officially on board. :goodposting:

Funny that I was thinking the exact opposite. Lendale will still get plenty of work, with Chris sprinkling in some special teams duty, some catches, and some carries. There is no way that he will emerge as the feature back. Fisher likes the power running game, and he always has. He drafted Chris Johnson not to be the feature back, but because he was the most explosive player left in the draft due to it being a weak WR year. 200 carries and 50 catches is his upside this year, and I don't see much more than that even down the road.
 
I have to say, as much as I like Johnson's game, LenDale is the value play right now. Three drafts in the last four nights and CJ has gone ahead of White in every league, that's crazy.

i would think Lenwhale would get almost 100% of the GL work, right? although i could big lenwhale pluggin away down the field, get gassed by the time they get to the red zone, and lose red zone touches to johnson. just a thought.

PPR scoring it could be close. I think too many think Lendale is just going to go away. I'm not as sold on Johnson's rushing ability (particularly between the tackles) at this point. I can see him catching 50 balls as I believe him and Crumpler are going to be the focal points for Young.

I didn't mean to be insulting (OK maybe a little), but I have seen way too many ridiculous "Chris Johnson is the greatest player ever and Lendale White sucks" posts in this thread. If you don't just look at the last few preseason games, you see a coach in Fisher that has always favored a big, durable back to carry the load. This may evolve into a committee approach, but expecting Chris Johnson to take over at the goal line is a poor assumption. Lendale was very good inside the 5 last year, and despite all the fat jokes got over 300 carries on a torn meniscus last year. All this being said, I wasn't sure if you were agreeing with the take that Lendale will be the red zone guy, or just trying to mock him.

fair enough. i'm not really drinkin the chris johnson kool aid just yet. i drafted lendale in a couple leagues. so i guess you could say i'm more interested than i was before. i've thought about offering trades to the c.johnson owners, but it seems like he is way overvalued right now. a 20 page discussion on this site might have something to do with that! :moneybag:

He did draft Chris Henry with the same intent and that didn't quite work out. No one knows how the touches are gonna be split. It's a wait and see approach.

As a Lendale owner I was hoping that Johnson would drop to me at 1.09 in my Rookie/FA Dynasty draft. Due to some odd drafting in front of me, including a Steelers fan with picks 1.03 and 1.06 not going for Mendenhall, I was staring at Mendy and C Johnson. As a big fan of Fear and Loathing, both the book and the poster, I downed the last of my Kool Aid and chose Johnson. We'll see I guess.....

Wow, ballsy. Hope you made the right move. I definitely go with Mendenhall there but this Chris Johnson kid inspires fanaticism.

Actually CJ got put in in the redzone in their last game and popped it in...
 
The wizard of pro football himself, Peter King, was on Sirius NFL Radio's The Opening Drive this morning and singled out Chris Johnson as his impact offesnive player for this year. He predicts a 70/30 or 60/40 split to start with Lendale getting the majority but that Johnson would have the primary role by mid season.

:Fingers crossed: The good thing about this situation is that a good game by White is 20-85-1 so the bar won't be set very high for taking a larger role.
 
I love this thread, it will never die. I have been a detractor, but took him at 7.09 RB#34 in a 12 team redraft last night to back up Lynch and Turner as my RB3.
