The Dodgers vs. The Cubs (1 Viewer)

Cubs sweep. This is a mismatch.
This is a bad match-up for the Cubs.
How so?
Dodgers have the best pitching staff in the NL statistically and they play in a pitcher friendly park. They also have just enough hitting and Manny Ramirez. Cubs would have beat the Mets in 3 and the Phillies in 4, I just don't like this match-up for them at all. I think the Dodgers will win three games 3-1 or 2-1.

Yeah, you had to see how the Cubs actually played pretty hard against Milwaukee and they didn't sit their studs like the rest of the playoff teams. It was pretty evident to me they wanted NY. Nonetheless, I still like the Cubs here. They are playing with confidence. I'll say Cubs in 4.

good point, but the comparable (or better) cubs staff will pitch in that park too. the cubs offense (which doesnt rely on the HR) and bullpen are the donald trump cards of this series. the cubs will win in 5, if not 4.

Don't you think the two go together? Transversely, Wrigley is a not a pitchers park, and yet, the Cubs and the 3rd best pitching staff in the NL

Cubs in 5

don't forget the curse of the dodgers.

No NL team that has defeated the Dodgers in the postseason has won the World Series.

1983 Phillies

1985 Cardinals

1995 Reds

1996 Braves

2004 Cardinals

2006 Mets

2008 Cubs?

this should be a fun and close series.

Dodgers in 5.

LA has a better bullpen and relies less on the HR then Chi. Outside Manny's 16 in 2 months, Etheir led the team with 20. Loney has 15 or so HRs and 90 rbis. Lowe is a big game pitcher and Billingsly is the power pitcher that you need in the playoffs. Chad B vs Zambrano should be a good matchup.

Manny is the trump card. He is a beast in teh playoffs and a guy that can beat you any time. Who do the Cubs have that can match Manny? I like Lee and Soriano and Aramis Ramirez but none of them scares a pitcher like Manny.

LA has a good bullpen, but i still wouldnt say its better. the fact that they dont hit for power is a major concern. you say that they rely less on the HR, but who cares if you arent scoring runs. they were 13th in the NL in runs this year.

zambrano, harden, and dempster are 3 power pitchers that you need in the playoffs. i think the dodgers are gonna need more than manny ramirez.

either way this is gonna be a good series.

I wouldn't rely much on yearly statistics. I'll take recency; it's far more relevant. This is a different team now, and their record proves it. Aren't they like 17 - 8 coming in? Is anybody hotter than that?

kuroda out for NLDS

SAN FRANCISCO -- Los Angeles lefty reliever Hong-Chih Kuo will not pitch in the NL division series for the Dodgers as a precaution because of a possible condition with his circulation.

Kuo, the Dodgers' top middle reliever with 96 strikeouts in 80 innings, warmed up in the bullpen to pitch in relief Saturday night at San Francisco but said he couldn't feel his fingers and didn't enter the game. He then threw for about 15 minutes in the indoor cage and still was having problems with numbness -- and his skin became red.

The Dodgers didn't want to take any chances Kuo, who has a long history of injury problems, might have a blood clot. He will undergo more tests in the coming days, then head to instructional league in Arizona to determine whether he might be available if the NL West champions advance to the National League Championship Series.

After the game, athletic trainer Stan Conte took Kuo to the emergency room at a local hospital, where the pitcher underwent a doppler ultrasound to check how his blood was circulating. The test was negative, signaling that his blood was flowing normally.

"I couldn't feel the ball," Kuo said, noting he's not overly concerned and hopes to return soon. "I'll do my best. It's sad, but I've just got to get better. What can I do?"

Los Angeles manager Joe Torre and Conte had hoped to see Kuo pitch an inning against the Giants to get a better idea of how his elbow was doing, then the latest issue emerged.

Kuo is 5-3 with a 2.14 ERA in 42 outings this season and has been limited in recent weeks because of a tender elbow. The Dodgers will be cautious with him considering Kuo already has been through four elbow operations, including two Tommy John reconstructions.

The 27-year-old Kuo had bone chips surgically removed from his elbow last summer.

Coming into this season, Kuo, who is from Tainan City, Taiwan, had pitched only 265 innings in seven professional seasons mainly as a starter.

He began the 2007 campaign on the disabled list because of a rotator cuff injury, something that started during spring training when he initially failed to tell trainers he wasn't feeling right. He was activated May 3 that year and sent to Triple-A Las Vegas, where he pitched seven games between two separate stints in Los Angeles, but by June 30 he was back on the DL with elbow inflammation that led to season-ending surgery.

In addition, right-hander Ramon Troncoso, outfielder Jason Repko and infielder Chin-lung Hu will report to instructional league to stay sharp in case they are needed later in the postseason. And left-hander Eric Stults will join his winter ball team in Mexico to get some additional work.

LA lost 3 of their last 4, since they clinched. So I wouldn't put too much weight into your sample. It's not like they're gonna be trottin' out Chan Ho, Stulz and/or Tyler Walker again. In fact, that last meaningless stretch only makes the 17 - 8 finish look even better. 16 - 5 before they clinched. And somebody said the Cubs were trying to win down the stretch. Could that be true -- that they didn't want to play the Dodgers?

BIG difference between Kuroda and Kuo....

To answer Mavericks question:What makes you think the Cubs will pitch to Manny?
They cant walk him every time, esp with Kemp, Loney and Ethier hitting around him and hitting the .300 mark. Plus Furcal could be back at the top of the lineup. This Dodger team is dangerous.

Even in the Mets series, they had Hart out there in the 9th inning. Just because they kept winning, doesn't mean that was their main motivation. They pitched all bullpen guys yesterday. Seriously, if they were AFRAID of the Dodgers, dude, would they have done that? Their starters are VERY well rested. We saw what Zambrano can do when well rested and Harden was great for the Cubs. Then you look at Game 1, and the Cubs look very solid. Derek Lowe was just 5-6 with a 4.42 ERA on the road. And he'll face Dempster, arguably the majors' best home pitcher (14-3, 2.86 home ERA).I am taking the Cubs in 4, possibly 3. And yes, I will admit that I am a hardcore homer.

Night Hawks, it was just a question, relax down bro, I know they're not afraid, they're pros. It's just that somebody, earlier in the thread, brought it up and I was wondering if there was some truth to it (that the Cubs weren't keen on playing LA).

No player will ever admit it, but I don't believe them, because there are certainly instances where a team would prefer to play one team, over another...like the Mets over the Dodgers, for example.

Well, the Cubs are right behind the Dodgers in terms of pitching (in a more hitter friendly park) and far superior hitting-wise. The Cubs scored almost a run higher per game than the Dodgers this year. That is huge. If the Dodgers only score 3 runs a game they get swept. Period.

Not sure I agree here. Game 2 was definitely their spring training lineup, they started Angel Guzman in Game 3 and gave high leverage innings to pitchers who didn't normally get them all series. While they always play hard, Lou has had the Cubs in Playoff mode for the last week and a half.

If anything, I think the Cubs would be more afraid of facing Johan twice in a five game series. In any event, I would hope that Cubs fans learned the hard way in 2003 to be careful what you wish for in terms of playoff opponents. When Florida took out the Giants (who had the best record in the NL), most Cubs fans were ecstatic.

Okay, so if we want to throw out two thirds of the season...Before the Manny trade (I am using stats on July 31 - I think this is about the time of the trade):

Cubs: 109 games, 580 runs scored, 450 runs allowed

Dodgers: 109 games, 450 runs scored, 431 runs allowed

After Manny:

Cubs: 52 games 275 runs scored, 221 runs allowed +54 run differential

Dodgers: 53 games 250 runs scored, 217 runs allowed +33 run differential

The Dodgers are absolutely better than they were. It still looks like the Cubs are better to me, though.

Cubs would have beat the Mets in 3 and the Phillies in 4, I just don't like this match-up for them at all. I think the Dodgers will win three games 3-1 or 2-1.
Period.
If you say so. I have no horse in this race, I don't like or dislike either team and I'll have no money on it. Just my opinion, period.

Team OBP%

Dodgers - .333

Cubs - .354

In a series that involves tough pitching, this will be the x-factor.....Cubs in 4
