So we have a team in my league that has scored the 4th most points in the league, and his all play record is 52-36, which is also 4th best in the league. This poor guy's record however, is only 2-6.

My team is worse than this guy's in every pure measure of success, yet I am 6-2.

This guy is whining and complaining on the message boards, and frankly, I totally empathize with him. His record should be better, and his team is actually pretty good. Of course every other member in the league says things like "you are who your record says you are", and likes telling him how much his team sucks...

but damn, that sucks for him. I know we used to have a lot of discussions about victory points, and other ways to minimize the luck of the schedule draw, but it seems that most members prefer to just keep the traditional team vs. team format. Any other tough luck stories? Does anyone actually use breakdown record, power, or total points in their leagues to balance out win loss record?

There are stories like this every year. Same siutation as yours everyone loves H2H, but understands that the records wont reflect whos the best team.Out of 10 teams.Team 1= 1510 points(1st), All play winning %0.625 (2nd). Average points against 158.9/week (10th) Record= 7-1Team 2= 1509 points (2nd) All play winning %0.667(1st) Average points against 189.6 (1st) Record= 4-4Team 3= 1467 points (3rd) All play winning %0.556(3rd) Average points against 187.7 (2nd) Record 2-6The 3 teams are pretty close in points the key factor in their records is the schedule and who they played that week. Its unfortunate that schedule is playing that significant of a factor.

Happens every year, give the High points team for the season 25% of the pot and all is happy in footballl land.
That's what we do. Well not 25% but you get your entry fee back.Total points leader 2 out of the last 3 seasons and missed the playoffs both years. The other year I was 2nd in points and made the playoffs on a tiebreaker.I love the h2h format though

I used to have high scoring teams and have so-so records...fighting to get into the playoffs...that sort of nonsense.

Finally I realized I drafted way too many streaky players, like a WR who could easily have 120+ 1-2 TDs as they did 3 catches for 30 yards. That's 1200 yards and around 10 or so TD's for the season, but he's only useful for half the games, and useless for the other half.

I finally started to draw the distinction between players of equal standing and grab the players who were more consistent, and my record vastly improved.

I can even recall making the distinction, after a 5-8 record in 2005 despite (again) being one of the top teams in scoring. I'd blow up one game, then do nothing for another two games. I was sick of it and sick of wasting time playing matchups all the time (and picking wrong).

Including playoffs

2000-2005: 46-52 (.469) = 6-7 avg 13 game record

2006-2010: 36-17 (.679) = 9-4 avg 13 game record

Now I'm not saying this is the case with your leaguemate, but I know it was the case for my team.

We save the last playoff spot for the team with the most points scored (out of the remaining teams). But to be honest, it's very rare that the team that has proven they are the best during the regular season, either with the best record or most points scored - is crowned champion at the end of the year.

Just relax and enjoy it for what it is - it quits becoming fun if you're going to worry about all the injustices of the season...

Our final playoff spot goes to the team with the most points (who isn't in already). 12 teams, 6 spots

The 5th highest scoring team in 2-6 and if the playoffs started today, would edge out a 5-3 team

My league has 3 divisions. The 3 division winners make it to the playoffs but the wildcard is determined by the non-division winning team with the highest point total. Thus, if you're the top scoring team, you're guaranteed a playoff spot. More than likely if you're one of the top 3 scoring teams, you'll make it to the playoffs.

Adding IDP helps immensely. It reduces the week-to-week volatility.

My personal story of fantasy scoring weirdness happened 8 or so years ago when a 12-team league I was in was drafted and hosted over at ESPN.

Our 6 team playoffs started after Week 13 and I needed a fluke turnover on MNF to make the playoffs. I ended up winning that last game to end the year 7-6. If that were the only quirky part it would make for a boring story.

Of the 13 weeks, I was the top scorer in all 7 games I won. I was the second weekly high score in 5 of the losses and 3rd in scoring the other week. I was FOUR HUNDRED+ points scored ahead of all the other teams with a team that had 2 Top 5 QBs. 3 Top 5 RBs, 2 Top 5 WRs and 2 more Top 10, the #1 TE, and the #1 or #2 K and DEF/ST.

My team was ranked in ESPN's Top 15 fantasy teams out of hundreds of thousands of fantasy football teams (they ranked the Top 25). It was a riot in that most teams on the list were undefeated or had one loss. Only one other team had 2 losses. Yet there I was with 6 losses. I ended up dominating in the playoffs, but during the regular season it was touch and go pretty much every game. I seemed to always go up against the David Garrard's of the world with their one mega scoring game of the season.
