THE FBG Fashion Thread :style: (1 Viewer)

Where is a good place for a 40 something to go shopping? I am looking for a casual dress look for going out with the wife & her co workers. (She is a catering manager for a private college where we live, so there are some gatherings with management, president of the college, etc). I am a Service manager at a car dealership so my every day clothes are pretty simple. I go look in Gap, Old Navy or other stores and everything looks so young or way to old. I am looking for casual with jeans or maybe a little dressier for some occasions but not suit dressy.
Land's End Canvas might work for you. All-American, seasonal and with a good range of stuff. Returns are easy too. Here's the thing: if you don't want to look like you shop at the mall then stop looking there. Plenty of places have interesting clothing but they require you to shop online. If that is the case then use free shipping to your advantage.

Nordstrom has a nice range and terrific return policy. Zappos does more than shoes and they're fantastic with returns.
Cosign on Nord and Zappos. Lands End is rubbish.

If you want to dress like a man and you should at your age, try: http://www.mrporter.com or http://www.barneys.com
Canvas line for casual can be solid. Porter? Barneys? One doesn't have to go to such lengths to look fresh and stylish. Consider Massimo Dutti, Uniqlo, Club Monaco, or, heck, even J Crew. Depending on the budget you can save a few lira in the process. Snellman isn't asking for a stylist but rather pointers.
I can tell he really needs a stylist merely from the obvious desperation in his post. And what's wrong with Barneys or Mr. Porter? if you're frugal and hate paying retail, just be patient and buy everything at the end of the summer/winter i.e. 80-90% off. Major rarely pay retail, yo!

Go to Nordstrom Rack, TJ Max or Marshalls. Decent #### always trickles in. Got myself a nice pair of Hudsons marked down $130, nice hoodies, a slick Incase Paul Rodriguez back pack and lots of decent Ts. Also grabbed a nice pair of Luckys for $40. Don't generally go lucky but they fit great, say "Lucky You" when the zipper opens and they are nice and dark blue with yellow orange stitching. I'm kinda slumming it right now but I'm making it work until my dollars start to flow. It's hit or miss but when it hits it hits hard...better option than Target.

Not a Lucky fan as I'd rather buy a solid pair of 514s. Used to wear Lucky's in college and reminds me too much of that fratty A&F shat.

Good post, I don't buy my clothes, but I believe between there, J Crew, the Gap and Target for basics like t-shirts, it's a quality well priced lineup that my wife finds for me...shoes excluded.

What's the :style: call on Levis these days? I'm a tad out of the loop here but they look like they've remade their brand and it's a pretty good job.

I'll hang up and listen.

Yep, they have started to catch up with the rest of the world. They make some pretty decent stuff now. I prefer the 514's and own a dark blue pair.

I own a couple Nordstrom dress shirts and love them, but that place is expensive even during the couple of sales they have a year.

I own a few pairs, but I'm far from a fashion guru. Took me a few tries to find out which fit I liked the best (514, I think).

Not necessarily my :style: but sounds like you're more of a mall goer...in that case try a Banana Republic or Macy's.Don't bother with Gap, Old Navy (terrible), American Eagle, H&M joints.
Old Navy has its place. Namely, cheap t-shirts and sandals to wear to the beach.
nah, go to Target and get Merona. Girls dry up when they see an old navy shirt. Plus Merona has better quality/fit.
Surprisingly, they make very good dress shirts, just need to be tailored a little. Mossimo makes a pretty good fitted shirt as well.

I seem to like a lot of Calvin Klein stuff at Macy's.

Currently my favs- although just the thought of wearing jeans this time of year makes me sweat...

Express is having a 40% off sale on jeans right now. Rocco's fit me perfectly. They're easily my favorite pair of jeans.
You're the Express guy, right (remember someone in this thread raving about them)? I just can't step into that store (i.e. Structure). Too many bad memories from their awful clothing in the early 90s. Plus, most of their stuff is made for teenage girls.

Like I said not a Lucky fan as far as jeans go but paying $150-$300 for a pair of Jeans isn't an option for me right now. I just started my old job again on Monday. Clothes are relative. All depends on your goal. If you are single and interested in meeting women who have a good fashion sense, then there's a lot of things that will make a difference. If you are hitched, and just like to look presentable that's also pretty simple. If you are all about business and making that impression also simple. I have the answers to all these questions.

The price point vs the quality at Express is laughable. The clothes fall apart. Flashy store and ads - #### clothes.

I don't think that was me. I get stuff from them when they have a huge sale, like 75% off most stuff a couple months ago, but normally it's overpriced and crappy quality. I do really like their jeans and polos/tees when they're on sale. Not really sure what you mean by "made for teenage girls". They have some pretty cool stuff, but as I said, the quality is poor for the price unless you catch them on sale. I'd love to get everything at Nordstrom and only wear AEs but that's not the life I live right now.eta: Looks like Fin already pointed out the poor quality part.

My skin color, or shoes?

I don't particularly like white shoes. More into neon these days. While I'm not "brown" I'm not pasty either.

used to be hard (10 yrs ago) to find cool kicks at a reasonable price....now, all sorts of casual sneaks for a reasonable price. I'm partial to Common Projects (http://www.barneys.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-BNY-Site/default/Product-Show?pid=502707118&cgid=mens-shoes&index=0 ) but you can find some more affordable options from the likes of Fred Perry and ALIFE on zappos and amazon.

:lmao: shoes. I own a white pair that I wear with a few different things, not a neon(shoe color) guy myself.

450?!? :lmao: Jeebus...

Any of you rock a bow-tie? I think it's time.

:bowtie:
Hmmm. Do you have a new girlfriend or something?
It was very much a joke. The only time I'm wearing a tie is when I'm married and buried.
You guys are a bunch of slobs. Have you given up on life already? live a little. Spend more than $15 on jeans.
Whoa.... you took me all wrong. I like looking good in stylish, casual clothing. I'm just not the guy who's gonna voluntarily wear a tie very often.
sorry bro...i always pictured you as a 45 year old Walmart security guard by day. 5'8 pushing 225, wearing hockey jerseys and denim shorts by night.
Damn! :lmao:

It's shtick. Major doesn't own any of that ####.

Kohl's, Macy's, Nordstrom, Dillard's are a huge step up from Old Navy and probably not much more expensive. But they have a lot of crap, too. You just have to pick through it.

This is about right. Again, Mr. Porter and Barneys at 80-90% off > all this rubbish

Nordstrom is so far ahead of all of those.

Nordstrom in the same park as Saks and Neimans. They get points off for some crap brands but great customer service. I like the fact you can buy something there, wear it for a month and return it without questions.
