THE FBG Fashion Thread :style: (1 Viewer)

and re: short-length... still on the above the knee side of things here in NYC (warm day today, and saw more than a handful of shorted guys).
 that's definitely the trend. and in regards to swim trunks, no more board shorts fellas.
Alternative?ETA that I have to disagree. Board shorts are board shorts. They've been around forever. It's like saying no more t-shirts and jeans.
I can find some links later but you'll notice at most of the trendy stores, the trunks being cut much shorter, about mid thigh. Not at the knee like board shorts. Same basic color schemes and patterns though.
this. all the shorts I've seen- swimming or walking- have been above the knee. I hate most Villebrequin, but that's the typical length I've been seeing.I kind of agree that board shorts are pretty much always ok on the beach- unless you're trying to be stylish and current. I've got a couple I still wear without sweating it... but I've given up on being current OR stylish.
I still have my board shorts but won't be buying anymore....kind of like a 3 button suit. Still wear it but not necessarily :style:

meh. i sort of feel that board shorts are more about being baggy than the actual length of them. yeah, sure, they can go past the knees but it's the bagginess that defines them more than anything. long and slimmer cut means you have capri pants. some FBGs, like me, are taller and this season's style of mid-thigh is waaaaay too short. i'm all leg and would rather not look like john stockton (nut hugger) or some preppy %^&*@! (no plaids for me).

So where are the comfortable V-Neck's where you are not spending $40 per shirt (Which probably costs less than $3 to make)?
Check out American Rag (I picked some up at Macy's). Nice shirts for $10.
fwiw- if there's a Forever21 near you that has a guys' section, IME those are the best combo of cheapest/most-comfortable/stylish Ts around. Last time I went in there, they had bupkis though. I'd say H&M too, but I find their stuff not as comfortable and ripping/wearing-out after a couple washings. Diesel's always good too (but pricey), as long as you find that rare piece that doesn't have DIESEL blammoed all over it. and re: short-length... still on the above the knee side of things here in NYC (warm day today, and saw more than a handful of shorted guys). and lol at a college kid in b-ball shorts feeling the need to comment on style issues- not a knock against him, but I'm not getting the purpose there.
Is it me or does the fabric at H&M feel thin? On shirts in particular. I've bought a $17 charcoal v-neck sweater and I love it, but everything else looked/felt thin and fragile.

I still don't understand how they make money with their price-points so low... crap fabrics and construction is a big part of it. after that it's gotta be [national change bank] volume

You're probably right about the quality/volume. I used to love Steve & Barry's for cheap athletic wear before they went out of business.

The first three, the 80s plaid shirt thing I find really annoying- and omnipresent. I haven't looked at BR in a long, long time. Zara- totally agree there too... I keep going back in there, pushing past all the orthodox jewish women (wtf?) and finding absolutely nothing. It was such a standby for me, even just a couple years ago- but lately, bupkis. To be honest, I've relied on Gilt and Century21 for just about everything lately. Oh yeah- and my top-secret keep-to-myself store of the last year.
I'll take a PM...As for Zara, the selection of clothes sold at the US stores has never been as good as that in Europe. It was a mainstay for me when I lived in Spain. I still get compliments on a coat from there that I bought in 2006. When I moved back to the states, I found the Zara in SF and thought I'd hit the jackpot... except the clothes there were definitely the wrong style for me compared with those at the European stores. There were some great brands in Spain when I lived there. Zara, Massimo Dutti, Springfield, Pull and Bear, and a bunch of others I can't recall. I think half of those are owned by the company that owns Zara LOL.
Good point about Europe vs US for Zara. But also, Zara's US stuff- as Saintfool mentioned- has gone really down hill over the last few years. Used to be I could walk in there and find a bunch of things I'd happily buy... I can't remember the last time I've even tried something on there. And it's not like those other more youthful stores like H&M where I just find the style too young and idiotic- the style at Zara looks kinda like what I'd guess Banana Republic or J Crew would be like... boring, friday casual stuff. Not sure if that's what's happening in their Europe stores too...?
I'm going to Zurich in two weeks on business. I'll check it out and report back.

I think (seems like Major agrees) this is a much better lookhttp://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41WeCB6ZgLL.jpgthan thishttp://www.damnilikethat.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/lacoste-logo-board-shorts.jpgBut you have to feel comfortable in them or it won't matter, of course

It's not you. Most of their stuff stateside is very poorly constructed. You're lucky if you get a year or two of wear before that sweater starts to crumble. I may have mentioned it before but Uniqlo in Soho is pretty much a Japanese H&M except for much better quality.

uniqlo also works with some really good designers, like Jil Sander.

Yep, I agree. If it's below 70 degrees, I'm wearing jeans.
70? It's a good thing you live in WI.Meeting some friends for drinks after work today. It's a casual place and temps are in the 80s, but changing into shorts wouldn't even occur to me.

yeah, that was maybe a low barometer. I'm generally not a shorts guy unless I have to...so probably 80's is a better benchmark.

How would I know? I live in Dallas.
It's freakin' freezing in MKE today. 36 degrees, rainy and windy. Sucks.

:ptt(stylishly fitted)s:Saturday I'll be enjoying a sunny 75 degree day while pub crawling. I'll be in jeans, but traditionally most of the revelers of the fairer sex will be busting out the shorts and skirts. :banned:

Jesus Christ and it's James Browns, are you kiddin me?! I jsut went to Christies and typed his name in, nothing comes up.

####in A, it's gone, just got off the phone with Christies. They were laughing because it sold in 2008. Sucker went for a grand is all. I can't believe that, it was actually attainable. A James Brown horse suit would have been epic. :lmao:

Not a fan of Uniqlo. Every time I go in there I keep looking around waiting to find something that's either interesting enough or cheap enough for me to want it. Neither has happened yet. They did open a pop-up store while the Soho store was under construction that had a couple of T-shirts I bought.... never saw anything like that again in the main one. And I've never seen so many different colored sweaters taking up SO much space.

I forgot, you're more of a Forever 21 guy :D

wearing a wristband today at work.

yay or nay?
Is that the Chicago city flag?ETA depends on where you work. Looks cool to me.
yes...chicago flag. working in chicago. :coffee:
I've been to Chicago, but not for years...
cool. do you wear wristbands?
I don't. It's one of those things that I think looks good on a certain kind of guy, but I am a bit too preppy.

I need some advice.

How short is too short for a pair of pants/jeans? When are they considered 'highwater'?

My favorite jeans are like 1 inch too short for my liking. When I am standing, the bottom of the pant leg rests perfectly on the top of my shoe. But when I sit down, it come up an inch or two. I don't think there is any way to lengthen them. But they fit perfectly, have a good medium/dark wash and are just worn in enough to be real comfortable.

Can I still wear them, or do I need to admit they are too short?
