Not really a fashion question, but what regular maintenance is good for shoes and suits?

I've got a couple of Johnston & Murphy shoes recently and I want them to have a long life.  How often do you clean/polish/etc?  Any recommendations for shoe trees?

For suits I know you are not supposed to wash/dryclean more than absolutely required, but how often do you brush them and what with?
The tips I have for getting good shoes to last:

-Don't wear them every day.  If you need to wear them every day, buy two, let one 'breathe' for a day

-I would polish them / shine them when they need it...  If they are looking banged up, they prob need it.  If you shine them well and have a light day, no need to.  Basically let your eyes tell you.

-Using cedar trees is a good idea.  I am not very good about this, but it obviously helps.

-Take them to your shoe guy before they are falling apart... Basically if 'falling apart' is 0% and brand new is 100%, take them to him around the 25-30% mark.  It will make his life much easier and the shoe last much longer.

Johnston & Murphy are my shoe of choice and imo not wearing them every day is key. I have never used trees, never really saw the need. Polish/shine as needed and as long as you're not walking through puddles every day you will probably have to have them re-soled several times before the uppers are shot. Great shoes.

Do you use J&M for resoling, I see they have a recrafting program, or a local cobbler?

I go to a local cobbler. The J&M shoes I buy typically come with a leather sole which while nice, doesn't hold up to water very well. Also loud as heck clip clopping on the office hardwood floors. When the original soles wear out I have my local guy resole with rubber. Much better grip, much quieter, and impervious to water.

Does Johnston & Murphy ever have sales?  Like the Stratton Penny but $185 is more than I want to spend...especially since I would want to get a rubber sole on the bottom so it doesn't feel like I'm walking on ice.

I've worn J&M dress shoes exclusively for almost 2 decades. Granted I don't really shop for shoes until I need them, but I've never caught them on sale.

Huge fan of J&M for basic dress shoes as well. Remarkably comfortable and hold up very well.

Outlet mall is the only place I've seen sales for them.  I like that shoe, but unfortunately they don't make it in a size 14.

That has a pit bull on it, $500 would be a steal. But no thanks, I'll stick to my Tap-out and wolf head t-shirts.

What the hell is the difference between a "sport jacket" and a suit jacket?

I sort of need a sports jacket for a wedding this weekend (its out in Montana and not a very formal affair, but it appears most of the men will be rocking jackets for the ceremony). I have 3 or 4 suits that I wear when needed, but the only separate jacket that I have is a very traditional blue blazer (which I absolutely hate the look of).

So I roll over to Lord and Taylor and tell the salesman I need a sport jacket, preferably in grey. He shows me a couple and I find one that fits well and I think looks pretty slick and make the purchase. But now that I'm home, I'm starting to get pretty sure that he just sold me a jacket suit separate. Its made of wool, is solid medium gray (although the fabric does have a little texture to it) and has 2 buttons. Double vented in the back.

The buttons are brown (rather than black, which gives me a little hope) and it has sort of a funky lining. The lapels are also thinner than myt "tailored fit" suits.

I've been googling this issue for the last 1/2 an hour and opinions are kinda all over the board.  Some places say that any jacket bought without the matching pants is technically a sports jacket. However, it seems like most places say that if its made of wool, doesn't have a distinguishable pattern (checks being the most common).

What say the fashion experts?

So what sets the sports jacket apart?

First off the sports jacket comes in a large variety of colors and patterns. It also isn’t as structured as suit jackets or blazers, and has a generally looser fit. A sports jacket should allow you to layer a sweater underneath and perhaps engage in slightly more rugged pursuits (comparatively speaking, of course). It also will sometimes have elbow patches on the arms, as well as a slit and pleats in the back. These design details once had a functional purpose: the patches protected the elbows from wearing out while the sporting gentleman traipsed through the countryside, while the pleats allowed him greater mobility. Today they serve simply as style statements.

The sports jacket is an extremely versatile piece, going with jeans and many types of trousers, such as ones made from corduroy, moleskin, and the ever popular grey flannel.

Plus, thanks to Italian design, the sports jacket is much more lightweight than it used to be.

Yeah, that was one of the first articles I found.  Didn't really help me understand the differences. I don't believe this jacket will allow for "more rugged pursuits" so I think I may have been hosed.

Why would a salesman sell me a suit coat when I told him I needed a sports jacket? These freaking people.

How about stylish dri fit loose fitting shirts ala Under Armour - is there another stylish brand that may be less expensive
I have a, uh, friend who is quickly turning my wardrobe into something solid.  For the above, she has been getting me stuff from LuluLemon. It's really really comfortable, well made, and fits just right to my frame.

Doubt it's cheaper than UA.

Minor differences but for the casual observer a suit coat should be sufficient for the wedding.  If you don't wear blazers much, return it and wear one from a suit you like.  I'm sure the salesmen was just getting you a blazer he thought would work and not paying attention whether it was technically a sports jacket or a suit coat.  I wouldn't lose any sleep over this chief.

Big fan of Lulu as well.  Definitely not cheaper than UA but looks much better.

Suggestions for nice jeans you can dress up with a tapered cut? As dark a wash as you can get without being black. TIA.

Just a PSA: Uniqlo polos are pretty much all on sale for $14.90 right now. I had two come in the mail this morning (first time ordering from them) and they're awesome. For whatever reason, they looked huge when I unpacked them, but fit really well when I tried them on. Highly recommended.

Has anyone bought a suit from Combatant Gentleman?  I have a nice brown suit I got a couple years ago but otherwise my only suit (grey) is a decade old and my black suit is black slacks and an old black blazer - it works but definitely not as good as it could be.  I have a wedding to go to soon and was hoping to refresh with a blue, grey, and black suit and it looks like CG has stuff for 220-350 per suit. I know you get what you pay for but...

Starting to worry about the suit action. I need a blue suit (like real blue, not the kind so dark it looks black) and a black suit.  Been looking at Men's Warehouse and Nordstorm and Jos A and Combatent and Indochino and can't find anything in my price range (300-500) that I like.

Anyone have a hidden gem suit place they can recommend ?

These are my go to polo these days.  I have one in just about every color they offer.  Love the button down color version.

Speir & MacKay is getting good nods from folks.

The North Face makes great synthetics...and is usually cheaper than UA, especially if you can get to an outlet.  Nike is also cheaper.

You are paying for a hot brand with UA...not a quality difference.

Suit Supply is your safest bet.  Good quality and great fit for the price. If you had more time I'd recommend shopping online (GILT, etc) and finding a great suit on sale.

I've pimped SS for a few years now. I love the quality and their in-house tailoring is top notch. I've got, maybe, 4 suits from them at this point. I always get compliments and feel like a million bucks with them. They did a big annual sale for a few years that was kind of secret. Great deals to be had then.

Has anybody tried the Uniqlo shorts?

Are the arms on the polos large?  I have problems with narrow or banded sleeves...
Big fan of the shorts.  Good cut right above the knee and I think they were less than $20.  They have a few different styles and fits so best to see what works for you.

Arms are not large.  They are a "fitted" fit.  I have relatively skinny arms, and a L isn't tight on me, but certainly aren't baggy.

How do they fit in the waist?  I've been nervous to try them since they come S, M, L, XL instead of an actual measurement.

The button down collar on a polo is a look I just don't get.
I think it is a lot cleaner.  The thing I hate about non button down shirts is it seems the collar invariably looks different on each side.  Meaning, a lot of times, I'll have one collar that wants to curl up, while the collar on the other side lays down cleanly.  That drives me nuts.  The button down erases that issue, and just looks better to me.
