THE FBG Fashion Thread :style: (1 Viewer)

Starting to worry about the suit action. I need a blue suit (like real blue, not the kind so dark it looks black) and a black suit.  Been looking at Men's Warehouse and Nordstorm and Jos A and Combatent and Indochino and can't find anything in my price range (300-500) that I like.

Anyone have a hidden gem suit place they can recommend ?
Heard an ad for indochino on the Solid Verbal CFB podcast this week. Opening up a location near me in PA in early August, so I can be fitted in-store. Anybody able to vouch for quality/fit? Interested in a custom fitting for $400 if the material and fit is worthy.

Hey, for anyone out there that wears Oxfords to work - what brand(s) do you typically go to?  Doing a little shopping on Zappos and I can obviously get several pairs and returns the ones I don't prefer aesthetically, but as far as the shoes holding up to the everyday grind, which brands do you prefer?  I've had really good experiences with G.H. Bass in the past but not finding the styles/colors/sizes I want from them on Zappos.  Rockport has a bunch on there, and I've found their shoes to be pretty comfortable and reliable in the past.  The brands I am not as familiar with that seem to have a lot of styles available : Steve Madden, Florsheim, Nunn Bush, Bostonian, Giorgio Brutini.  I have little to no familiarity with these brands.  Anyone have good/bad things to say about any or all of these?

Note : I'm looking in the ~$100 range as I need to get about 3 pairs in different colors, so not looking at $300 Bruno Maglis or anything like that.  These are work shoes to replace the Bass shoes I have that have lasted me for about 8 years.  The Bass' are still holding up beautifully in terms of structure, but are just kind of scuffed and beaten up and need to be replaced.  Comfort and durability are key.  TIA.

I only have experience with Steve Madden and Bass of those that you listed, and caveat that I'm not an oxford wearer. IME, the maddens tend to be more trendy but not built as well to last. I've had decent experience with Bass- but I have an annual trip to an outlet during summer vacation where I get a pair or two for cheap. wouldn't otherwise spend more for them because I prefer the trendier styles.

$250-300 shoes make a cheap suit look nice. On the flip side  $75 shoes make a $1000 suit look lousy

I'm a big fan of Allen Edmonds shoes
One of the only problems I have with shoes is my belief that you really need to try on the shoes before you buy them.  I would NEVER buy shoes on-line that I hadn't tried on at the store to get a feel for them first.

I go more for the classic look rather than trendier styles - I have a Bass outlet a few minutes from my office, but the outlet malls here are so GD crowded that it's a 30 mintue process just to park and get to where you need to go.  I think I paid $80-85 for them 8-9 years ago, getting them for ~ $99 on Zappos seems like a better deal just so I don't have to spend an hour weaving through crowds in 100 degree heat.

I'm scrapping the Madden choices - I was afraid they'd be of lower quality/durability already and this just cemented it.  Maybe I'll just stick with Rockport, I've owned several pairs of those over the years and they were solid (though not as long-lasting as the Bass.)

Zappos has free shipping and returns.  You can order 10 different pairs and wear them around the house and then return 9 of them as long as you don't #### them up.  You have 365 days to return them too, so you can wear them a lot longer than you would in a shoe store to get a feel for how they conform to your feet, etc.  Again, as long as you don't #### them up, and of course, you can afford to carry the $1000 balance on your card until you return 9 of the 10.

My go-to brand is Stacy Adams. Good comfortable shoes without crazy colors or styles. Perfect for work. I rotate brown and black oxfords Monday - Thursday. You can get them on zappos and any Macy's.

Looking for recommendations for:

- business casual shirts

- brown/black shoes (not overly dressy, but for business casual)

Got my third pair of Cole Hahn Zeros.  My Allen Edmonds are just collecting dust.  I get compliments daily on my CHs and they are more comfortable than nikes.

My go to for business casual are chukkas.  I like them with anything from jeans to chinos (I'm no so sure about them with creased slacks, but anything below that level of dressiness).

Depending on your price point, Clark's are a cheap entry level shoe with good quality for the price ($50-60 on Amazon), or you can find them for $200+ by designer brands.

Alright fashionistas, anyone able to help identify these shoes? I got them for a steal, but I'm not sure if they're some sort of lower end shoe with the Barney's name or if they're legit. They SEEM high quality, but I've been mostly through bargain bin guy than higher end $tyle guy.

You bought used shoes made by a Barney's licensee.

I bought them at Goodwill, so being used isn't a surprise.

So that I have an idea in the future, how can a licensee shoe be identified? Sticking or lack there of? Type of welts?
Barney's is a retailer. They aren't a manufacturer. But they have some really overpriced stuff that gets licensed out. I don't get buying $60 t-shirts  because they have that label in them.... but the Quality should be decent for their leather shoes, I guess. Especially at Goodwill prices.

Need some type of casual/walking shoes that is comfortable yet durable.  Thinking a canvas shoe, bit I'm open to ideas.

Their store brand is well made.  The Barneys Co-Op stuff can be hit or miss.  Think Bergdorff private label or something along those lines.  If you paid $25 for those shoes, you got a good deal.

Ok fasionistas. I need some head to toe cabana-wear (my son took all my stuff to a vintage clothing shop) for an upcoming trip.  Whatcha got?

Just saw this. They were $7. It would be hard for me not to get my $ worth out of them.

Saks Off Fifth is having its tri-annual buy one get one free sale. On designer suits that are already close to 50% off. Want two $1500 suits for $800 total? Now's the time. Or two $800 suits for $400 (or for chet, two Armani or brioni... well, I can't count that high, but you will literally save thousands). It's 70-75% off.

GB the fact that one season old for a man's suit means we can still wear it for a decade. And quality hat will literally last a decade as some of mine already have.

Got me these two, one that seems to be almost out of stock and is now almost 80% off (no buy one get one, but at that price, who needs that?)

Classic (though 'modern') grey pinstripe

Sweet ### blue window pane

Love that blue windowpane suit- damn wish I needed one

Let me rephrase in non-Frank Costanza vernacular. Resort/cruise wear?  I'm from the frozen north and have few articles of such clothing.
Does that mean you don’t any short sleeved shirts or don’t own shorts?

Some advice would be don’t try to buy “cruise wear”. Just get clothing for warm weather

I agree with what others said. The first question are you fashionable and fit looking to show off a bit? Or not?

Guayaberas work in many situations. Just don't get one too fancied-up. Clean and classic, keep it simple, pair it with nice pants or shorts and you're home free.

Edit: If you're young & in shape, a knit polo would work too. Only if you can pull it off. Not many guys can.
Yup something like this. Thanks. Now turn me on to some shorts/pants and accompanying shoes and I'll be on my way.

Looking for a new Cole Haan-like loafer (non-tasseled); something like a penny loafer

Did Cole Haan for years but feel the quality is not good now. (Squeaks, etc.)

With a price point of $100-150, does anyone have anything they would recommend?

Side note - cobbler yesterday wanted $95/pair to resole and heel my Cole Haan loafers. New pair arrived for $99 all in.  I hate toss the old pairs but it just doesn’t make sense. I may check pricing in KC.

What % of a new shoe would you spend on fixing on old pair?

I wouldn't waste my money to resole Cole Haans.  Throw em in the gutter and go buy another.

People often try and overcomplicate fashion.  Such as referring to things as cabana-wear

Clean look is often a good look.  Clean / fit well / be in decent shape

Here's an example

https://ashleyweston.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/T-Shirts-V-Neck-Crew-Neck-Ashley-Weston-Mens-Wardrobe-Essentials-640x420.jpg

Solid tshirt, no logo, shirt fits perfect, pair with jeans or well-fitting khaki shorts (daylight only for the shorts).  Belt, add a nice watch.

Shoes can vary depending on circumstances

I agree. To Cancun, I take a vartiet of solid color or sublte pattern shirts, bathing suits and khacki/grey shorts for day time wear. I pair those with flip flops or something like this
