The Footballguys CD (1 Viewer)

Due to increased printing costs, increased postage costs, and lots of competition on the news stand, we have opted to try something quite different for this year.

Namely we will be releasing our magazine (and a lot of extra material) on a CD that we will distribute.

There are three ways you can get this CD:

1. You can catch up with a Street Team event (calendar will show cities/events soon) and get one free by exchanging your email address for a CD.

2. Pay us $3 and we will mail you one.

3. Get all the files for free in our subscription area.

We will likely be taking pre-orders starting this Monday an expect to ship around June 15th. Here is what will be on the CD:

- 250 page Full-color Magazine (PDF)

- Detailed Player Profiles by Position (Each position will be 300 to 500 pages; PDF).

- Abbreviated version of Rookie Scouting Portfolio (PDF) - 75 pages

- Expanded Team Pages (PDF) - approximately 100 pages

- Full Value and Overvalued Articles with all comments (PDF) – approximately 75 pages

- Last 25 episodes of the Audible Podcast

- Expanded Top 300 w/Comments

- IDP Top 200 w/Comments

- VBD Application

- Draft Dominator Application

- Trade Dominator Application

- Projections Dominator Application

- Backup up spreadsheets for projections, rankings, historical data, stats, etc)

- 20 Timeless Classic Articles (VBD, beginner series, etc)

- Additional 2009 Articles

Thats cool. Will there be inserts? Giveaways/contests/golden tickets?
Although the tickets are a fun event, they add to the cost of all of this a great deal. We opted to keep the cost down vice adding a lot of extras like the Golden Tickets.
Will there be a B&W option for easy printing? Or an print design for even easier printing?
It is an Adobe Acrobat file (PDF). Although it's in full color, you can print easily in black and white.
Do you get one if you sign up for a standard FBG account?
Yes the CD contents will be available for free to subscribers.

On the one hand, this is sad, sometimes I hate the economics of the newspaper/mag industry

On the other, I look forward to the new product. Good Luck with it.

suggestion-next year add a special bonus feature; audio of cecil's rants

I love the fact that you're no longer making magazines! to be honest, the price of fantasy football mags ( and all other printed materials) have skyrocketed, I mean, is any fantasy magazine really worth $7.99 for outdated material that was

printed in May?!

perhaps you can have more up-to-date information on the PDF's?

Anyone who commutes to work will miss a printed copy. When you spend up to an hour on a train each way, having good magazines or a book on the go is a must and it's when I read the most. I've got a few long flights in June to fill as well.

Its a also kind of nostalgic to keep old magazines, on all topics, for the future. PDFs and CDs get lost and scratched. I suppose its inevitable but quite disappointing.

The stickers and tattoo transfers will be gone as well. My 3rd year old daughter loved having the FBG logo on her and my arms for a couple of days. My wife didn't though

Its nice that's its free for subscribers, but I have to say I'll most likely buy a competitors product as well, even if it is a slightly inferior product. Sure you can't print off a small run and only mail them? I'd pay up to $10.

Love the new content, but absolutely hate not having it in magazine form.

I already can read almost everything I want to know about FB on the pc. I am looking for something to take with me and read on the beach or up the mountains during the summer.

This is a major let down and I am thoroughly disappointed  that I have to go back to buying Pro Football's magazine.

I will also miss the FBG magazine. (Can't believe I just agreed with a Philly fan) Outdated info or not, it's good to be able to take the mag on trips and to the john, just to study and process information. Goodbye, good ole outdated, overpriced magazine.

David,

Have you considered on-demand print services where they create a glossy copy for your content and ship it out to those who need it in hard copy for a price? Google "on demand printing" to better understand. Amazon and lots of small print shops will do this for you, and you should be able to recover their cost in an additional fee for the glossy magazine.

Me -- I prefer the CD and selecting the files I want. The material is dated, it just provides an early overview and fun reading during vacation. I will print what I want at work

you guys don't have laptops or pda's? I thought all fbg's were busy execs who have the latest technology. :wall: pdf makes it even more accessible to me. put the pdf on a memory card, pop it in my treo, read it anywhere.

Have both and I do not take either on to the beach or up into the mountains. I hope they listen to Stickboy, at least it would give an option of getting the magazine.

I recall getting a disk of info back in 04, right? I still have it packed away somewhere. (I am a pack-rat and save everything Fantasy Football related.)

Anyway, I'm on the fence here. I always look forward to the magazine but I can deal with the CD. Print what I want and read at my leisure. Good luck with the new format David and Joe.

So how do I view the files when pooping? Yeah I could print it out, but that isnt the same. I will miss the soft paper back format. Maybe I could bring the CD in the bathroom and stare at myself?

Thank god for Wireless.. Just hope the wife isn't near by when I go walking to the "Library" with the Laptop in hand :lmao:

I agree. :lmao: on the new format. I won't be buying.

I don't really know if the CD idea is going to be a success, but the fact that you aren't publishing fantasy football magzines in June is a huge step in the right direction.

This is most unfortunate. I loved the magazine. Getting the magazine in the mail and opening up the "holy grail" of football mags... it was like Christmas in July! Having the same content available in electronic format just doesn't provide the same experience for me.
 Although I do understand the economics and sensibility, it's kind of a bummer. What's next all my super hero comics will be movies?

Why have a physical CD at all?

Why not just have a download link for the PDF?

it makes some sense for a promotional hand out I guess, but mailing it seems like a large expense.

DD - I want to add something to what Buddy Ball said here and the commuter noted above. We all spend far TOO MUCH time in front of a computer(s).................and yet here is another reason we (have) to.At some point in the day, I have to get out of the office and away from my computer and TV and spend some time with the wife............watching the news, then dinner, then likely talking while we watch televsion or listen to music in the living room - at many times one of us will have a book or magazine as well - no problem, but you can't bring the computer to that environment without risk to bodily harm...................one of the great reasons to have a football magazine.......especially at this time of year when they are NOT yet outdated.I realize the economy and your decision to save dough, and some of your competitors have already or will do the same - it is just sad that printed material is going the way of the dodo bird.PVH

It will be available as a PDF. People who want a CD though can pay $3 to have one shipped.

Yes, folks that subscribe will be able to download it all via a link to the PDF.It's more of a promotional thing getting the magazine into the hands of folks that only want to spend $3. We're flying sort of solo here as this is new ground for us. We'll see how it goes. But I'm excited about the potential.I too am sad in one sense not to be doing the mag. There is something undeniably special about print. When I first started out, I had websites run my articles and it was fine. But the first time I ever saw one of my articles in a "real" magazine on the newsstand, it was different for me. So there's definitely some benefit there. But I also feel that the younger one is, the less attachment / prominence they place on print. And the downsides of printing just become too big to overcome. So bottom line is we're excited about this new format. Thanks for giving it a chance.J

just out of curiosity, how much would you have to charge per copy to make doing a printed version viable? I'm quite sure that a lot of us that enjoy the printed version would be willing to pay more to get something concrete in our hands. Perhaps packaging in the cd with the magazine at an added cost? I still have my spiral bound stat notebook that you guys sent out in 2004 (2005?) sitting on my bookshelf along with every issue of the magazine.

Would you be interested in an on demand printing service like stickboy mentioned?

I agree. on the new format. I won't be buying.
 It's free.
Oh. Well that is cool then. I guess I will just stick to reading the shampoo bottle when pooping. on the new format.

I completely understand the logistics of the decision, but I too am saddened by the loss of my FBG's mag. My rainy days and early mornings during our trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area will be filled striclty with porn. Since you've been publishing it, I'd bring my FBG's mag which would be covered up by some knockoff cheap fantasy football magazine to share with the masses. When they had that mag, I was forced to "read" the porn!

Hi valence,I try to be honest about what our capabilities are and that we don't over promise. Or promise something we struggle to deliver. With that said, I think the only way we'd be able to do something like this would be if the solution required virtually nothing for us to do on our part. Like being to put folks that wanted a printed copy in touch with a 3rd party printer that could easily print. I'm sure lots of folks do this. I'd guess that even Kinkos would do this. Walk in with a disk and say print this and put a spiral binding on it. Or you could email it to kinkos. That kind of thing. I don't want to sound dismissive, but I just know how insane it gets in the summer for us and we're really not able to add anything more to what we're doing there.J

You can always print it yourself. That's what I did with selected pages of Waldman's Rookie Portfolio.

Heck, some libraries offer free printing options you could take advantage of.

Seriously...if you are willing to pay $8 for a magazine. Why not just print the PDF file? Would that cost more than $8?

Because we plan to hand these out through staff and street teams in events all over the country this year. Our long range plans include teaming with a Barnes and Noble, Hooters, Best Buy type of company for mass distribution starting in 2010.

:jawdrop:

I'll really miss having the printed version to read.

Printing it on my PC printer would probably cost $10 in ink and paper, maybe more - and it wouldn't be double sided.

3 ring punched paper ain't the same as a traditional mag - not even close.

I fully understand the economics, and lack of time to produce it.

But damn... :(

should have gave it a couple more years before bailing on the print of your mag, it was just gaining some steam I would think and printers are starved for business right now (get a bidding war going and prices would have been less than last year I bet). I know I'll buy a couple mags and one would have been fbg, the last thing I would want is a cd. I would be shocked if anyone would actually pay 3 bucks for the cd, just my opinion and a little disappointed anyways...

I informed one of my league members who does not visit the site but buys the magazine and he was rather pissy about it as well. No matter what is said there is no equal for holding a book or a magazine on the beach etc etc. It clearly was not profitable enough for FBG to continue to print it, however I do believe we will see some other mags drop out this year and instead of filling in the gap they decided to make it larger. I hope it works out for the boys.

I just got the mag for the stickers, tattoos and golden tickets.

Prefer up to date content for FF purposes. Seems like the time on the mag is going toward strengthening the site content. :lmao:

Looking forward to the online content and contests.

Permanent tattoo?

I'm in favor of it, environmentally & economically.

I think you may get quite a bit of play out of handing them out at events, too!

Way to think outside the box.
