The Game That Changed History (1 Viewer)

Not really..Eli was draft by SD and then snubbed them , forcing them to trade him to NYG.point being Peyton would not have played for SD , either..Archie wouldnt have allowed it.

The game that changed history.

A 3-4 Chargers team host an 0-7 Colts team.

Chargers win the game and finish the season 4-12 while the Colts finish 3-13.

One team gets the Peyton, the other gets Leaf.
Actually the game that really might have delivered Leaf to SD was the next one, when the Chargers lost to the Bengals.

Bobby Humphries had actually led SD to a SB a few years before, and he had them at 4-4 after that Colts win. But he got hurt in that Cincy game and they proceeded to lose that and all their remaining game, finishing 0-8.

People forget that Arizona also finished 4-12 that year. They actually beat the Falcons 29-26 in the final game of the year by scoring 15 points in the closing minutes of the 4th quarter on the strength of 2 Jake Plummer TDs.

Assuming the Cards would have pushed aside Plummer for PM then Peyton could have been a Card. I think Archie would have definitely objected to.

The Raiders and Bears also finished 4-12.

The Raiders beat the Chargers one game. Losing that could have also delivered Peyton to the Raiders - and HC Jon Gruden - imagine that.

The 1998 draft went:

3. AZ - Andre Wadsworth

4. Oak - Charles Woodson

5. Chi - Curtis Enis

NFL -- Chargers Trade Up In Draft -- San Diego Wants Leaf Or Manning

AP: Cincinnati Enquirer

SAN DIEGO - It cost them plenty, but the San Diego Chargers assured themselves of getting Peyton Manning or Ryan Leaf next month in the NFL draft.

Desperate for a starting quarterback, the Chargers made a blockbuster deal with Arizona yesterday to move from the third pick in the draft to the second, behind Indianapolis.

The Cardinals got San Diego's first- and second-round picks this year, its first-round pick in 1999, kick-returner Eric Metcalf and linebacker Patrick Sapp.

"I think the consensus of opinion is that two guys like (Manning and Leaf) don't come along very often," Charger General Manager Bobby Beathard said. "If we're going to be successful in getting that type of quarterback, we're going to have to give up something, and we really did."

Beathard said the Chargers have no preference on whether they get Manning or Leaf.

"Each one has the ingredients to be a top-level quarterback in this league," he said.

I also recall that moron Beathard inquiring with Indy to swap picks, so he could guarantee Leaf, surprised that didnt happen

Just to nitpick, I'm pretty sure you mean Stan Humphries.

the colts were a doormat franchise for a long time
But on the plus side, they've gotten better over the years at having QB's selected first overall work out well for them. They deserved a Peyton Manning after getting boned by Elway and then nabbing Jeff George. :(

I still remember seeing Leaf on Letterman weeks after getting drafted, and after hearing him talk for not even a minute, I thought he was a total moron and didn't expect him to do well in the NFL. I still don't know how he went 2nd overall in an NFL draft.

Still my poster child for guys that shoot up the draft board after a strong final college season or simply hype.

Wasn't there some debate about Peyton vs. Luck that year? Are we certain that another team picking #1 overall wouldn't have necessarily taken Leaf over Peyton?

Led the NCAA in passing, 9.7 yards per attempt, 34 TD 11 INT.

na, with our crack scouting staff we would have taken Leif (I loathe rod graves).

And never completed more than 56% of his passes.

And still sounded like a total moron when he talked. Even back then, doing well in college was not a guarantee that you'd be successful in the pros.

Sure. It was a different game. The Pac-10 completion leader that year was Cade McNown with 60.6%. Manning was only 60.2%. Leaf was 1.7 yards/attempt better than Manning.

A little side note. Mike Riley wanted to draft a less heralded QB out of Michigan ( in the 4th round I believe) in 2000, but it was shot down by GM Bobby Bethard.......Riley ultimately lost his job......The Leaf pick prolly had more to do with than anything.....And maybe not getting Tom Brady.

Drew Henson?

The Chargers took a QB six spots after Brady - JaJuan Seider.

They also had a chance to take Brady earlier in the 6th but drafted a 25 year old LB Shannon Taylor instead.

Yea, I guess Riley really wanted Brady, but Bethard didn't.

Yeah Leaf is #1. Vince Young can't be far behind.

I wonder if that's happened this year ... maybe if the Titans had lost to the Jags they'd be #1 pick and could have taken a future hall of famer!

this game didnt really change history then, because if SD loses, Arizona would of had #1, or possilby the colts still based on tie breakers
Maybe I'm missing something, but if the Colts beat SD and everything else plays out the way it did, SD finishes 3-13, Ari still finishes at 4-12 and Ind finishes at 4-12, right?

Of course, it's very possible that Beathard takes Leaf over Manning.

Yep, however if AZ had also lost (to be 3-13) they would have had the tie-breaker against the 3-13 Chargers.

The other guy wrote "less heralded". Not more.

Had they of kept their head, San Diego, they could have gotten a free look at Leaf while Eli sat on his but all year. Archie and the boys figured they won't have to play each other for the right to go to the SB if they are in different conferences. However, SD ended up looking like dopes. Like I said at the time, they should have said, we drafted you so you either sign or sit. Meanwhile they get a good look at leaf.

interesting stuff. Also worth considering - what if Josh Brown had missed the 4th quarter 34 yard field goal on November 13, 2011?

Rams lose that game and end up with the #1 pick in 2012 instead of the Colts. Would the Rams have made the same trade with the Redskins? Would Luck be playing this weekend for Washington? Or would the Rams have taken Luck and be 2 time defending Super Bowl champions? Would they move to LA?

idiot kicker!
