The Gentlemen of Fantasy Football League is opening it's doors for the 2010 fantasy football season. I bring 8 years of experience in the sport as a league commissioner, columnist for a subscription based fantasy football/baseball website, and five fantasy football championships. I'm a firm believer of fair play, sportsmanship, and hardcore fantasy football action.
I. League Overview and Fees
The GFFL is a 12-team, non-keeper, auction league utilizing ESPN.com's League Manager service as well as League Safe to securely collect the $40 entrance fee, plus their $1.50 service fee. Aside from the service fee, the GFFL offers a 100% payout with $300, $120 going to the runner-up, and $60 going to the overall points leader in the regular season. The League Manager (me) will determine final allocation of winnings on league safe, to prevent a deadbeat owner from holding up the payout process. The deadline for league fees will be the Friday before the auction, which is outlined below.
II. The Auction
In the GFFL auction, teams will have a $200 budget to spend on 9 starters and 9 bench players. The draft will be held on ESPN.com and is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, August 29 at 11:00AM EST with a backup date of September 5 at 11:00AM in case the league takes longer to fill than expected. Owners are encouraged to take part in a mock auction to fimiliarize themselves with the process used in the ESPN Auction Draft Rooms.
III. Schedule and Playoffs
The GFFL uses a 13-week regular season schedule. Since there are no divisions in the GFFL, teams will play at least one game against each of the other teams, with two contests coming against two randomly decided oppenents. The teams with the top six head-to-head records will advance to the playoffs, which take place from weeks 14-16, where the top two teams will receive a bye in the first round. The winners of the wild card round will advance to the semifinals. A champion will be crowned in week 16. To reward teams for their regular season success, the home team (team with the better record) will be rewarded a 2-point home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
IV. Rosters and Transactions
Rosters are composed of 18 players with 2 injured reserve slots. Starting lineups are composed of 9 players (QB, RB1, RB2, WR1, WR2, WR3, TE, K, DEF). There are 9 bench slots with position maximums of 3 QB, 5, RB, 6 WR, 3 TE, 2 K, 2 DEF.
Free agents are picked up through a waiver bidding process. Teams have a 100 free agent budget to use throughout the season. Waivers run twice each week ending at 7PM EST on Wednesday and Saturday.
The trading deadline is December 8 at 12 PM EST. To prevent collusion, the league commissioner reserves the rights to veto trades where obvious foul play is involved.
