Every year there is discussion of the "ideal" draft slot. Obviously, if someone jumps up like LT did last season, then the 1st pick is ideal.
However, I think there are some things about this slot to consider.
Firstly, if you get this slot, you have immense pressure to not mess it up, both from your league mates as well as yourself. Since this slot gives you a leg up on the competition, if you don't make the championship game or worse, don't make the playoffs, you are in for a year or more of ridicule.
Second, the larger the league, the more bored I get between picks. It is a long time coming back to you. Many will say they'd take the boredom this year to get LT, but I'm not so sure.
Third, I don't think you get to capitalize enough on other people’s errors during the draft. How many times have you seen someone drop who represents great value only to know there is some savvy owner that will scoop then up before it ever gets back to you.
Obviously, having your stud RB out of the way in the first round, you can let the rest of the draft come to you, but I think you have to be more precise the balance of the draft than someone picking from the 1.06-1.08 range. They are getting the chance to capitalize on the mistakes of others up and down the serpentine.
Finally, I think having the 1st or 2nd pick puts a major target on your back as others will try to snipe you along the way. A good example of this is the discussion that keeps growing about defensive draft strategies to keep the person with the top pick from getting the best WRs or QB at the 2/3 turn.
These are just some thoughts that come to mind as I prepare for an “experts” draft this week where I have the 1st overall pick.
With all of that said, I’m taking LT!
