AJ - The first decision (Marty) was justifiable, although I disagree with it. The second (Norv) was downright stupid.Lovie - Rex needed to be benched. There's no argument there, IMO.

AJ and LovieAs my coach said in high school..."you dance with the girl that brought you there" In a game of parody, I see these two decisions as very much decisions of "panic"Discuss.
Ted Cottrell was also a dumb move which is not getting the attention it deserves. This guy has been getting a pass because he has been filling the minority HC interview requirement for the last few years.Too bad, he's a glorified LB coach. He rode Wade Phillips coattails in Buffalo, but has been a disaster is 3 different DC gigs since.

Marty, who has a tendency towards megalomania as he settles into his coaching gigs, got uppity about hiring his brother as the defensive coordinator so Smith fired him. Ok, I guess I can understand that.
The problem was that, given the timing (late January) he was forced to hire Norv as his head coach . . . and Ted Cottrell as his DC. The irony is that I'd take Kurt Schottenheimer as a DC over Cottrell every day of the week.

I don't think there's an argument that Marty wouldn't have the team with a better record right now - they'd be 3-1 or maybe 4-0 with him at the helm. However, I can understand how you get rid of him - he has shown over & over again that he is not likely to successfully navigate a playoff bracket, ever. You could make an argument that last year's playoff loss was the worst of his career, and rivaled some of the all-time greats. Yes, the Patriots were severely under-rated and their seeding did not match how well they were playing at the time, but a 14-2 team should win that game. I can't blame a team for seeing that they are in a very special window of enormous talent (not counting the WR's) & that they have to get a coach that can win them a Super Bowl. That seems reasonable. Hiring Norv Turner does not.

He's perfect for that team.... strong running game, great defense (when coordinated correctly), shopkeeper QB (better for Rivers if he doesn't need to win it on his own)I will say if they go after Cowher next year, they also resign Turner. But I understnad the Panthers are goign to make a strong push for Cowher next year.
