Feels like a bit of a reach here, but I'm going to be doing plenty of reaching as well, so good on you.1.03 Die Hard, Action
welcome to the party, pal
ETA: think I’ll watch it tonight
Exactly. Unless we are going just box office, it's not like there are stats to look at to argue, and people love movies for a big variety of reasons.Hags and I did discuss that unlike the Sports draft, this is so subjective that we are just going to pick our favorite movies while doing our best to do well. This also makes the smack talk a lot more fun in this draft - nobody was logging in and saying that Jordan or Gretzsky were crap picks.
was just thinking the same thingThank god there's not a Christmas or Holiday category or I would have had to fight some of you people.
FTR, you think it IS or IS NOT a Christmas movie? I feel very strongly about this.was just thinking the same thing
I quit this draft due to sorrow. :(
Die Hard would be #1 for that category too.was just thinking the same thing
It is notFTR, you think it IS or IS NOT a Christmas movie? I feel very strongly about this.
Good pick, I had that really highly ranked as well1.03 Die Hard, Action

It is not![]()
EXACTLY. It's set around Christmas and has some Christmas elements but it's not about Christmas. You could take every bit of the Xmas pieces out and it would be just as good. I'll fight by your side.Christmas movies suck, and Die Hard most definitely doesn't suck, so therefore Die Hard is not a Christmas movie.EXACTLY. It's set around Christmas and has some Christmas elements but it's not about Christmas. You could take every bit of the Xmas pieces out and it would be just as good. I'll fight by your side.
If it wasn't set at Christmas we wouldn't have gotten "Now I have a machine gun. HO-HO-HO"Of course Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie. It's just fun to tongue in cheek say that it is.
Oh no. He's much more schmaltzy with later films.Plus E.T. is Spielberg at his emotional hand holding best.

It was/is but I don't feel like it's held up well. I would be curious if Stranger Things gave it any kind of bump in popularity with young people.E.T. is really such a great movie because of the thematic elements in it.
The dinner table sceen sets up the whole thing. You can see that the nuclear family has been broken apart by divorce and how lonely Elliot is as the middle child. When brother Michael says "Why don't you think of how other people think for a change", is really talking to the whole family including the mother.
E.T. brings the whole family back together because he's the catalyst that breaks them out of their self absorption. When Elliot reaches out for Mary with the cry of "Mom!" it's a critical moment because they realize how much they love and need each other.
Another thing - this movie shows the superiority of 80's movies because kids did things. They didn't have superpowers and they're not stunted and coddled by helicopter parents. It's why Stranger Things is so popular, IMO, because it's a return to exemplifying that kids don't have to be protected at every turn, and really that they're stunted when they are.
Hags is working on it - I made him work on our Google Docs Cheatsheet first. Is there a spreadsheet started for draft picks yet?
I was going to ask if people thinks this holds up. It's been many years since I've watched it honestly, but thought about watching it the other night when it popped up on NF.It was/is but I don't feel like it's held up well

I know, I was just being a wiseass.Oh no. He's much more schmaltzy with later films.
At least this one is personal to him since his family was similar.
No need to be sorry - there will be top movies that all of us don't like. I think E.T. was, like another movie that I won't mention as we should see it picked soon, one of those you had to live through the phenomenon for it to impact you the way it did many. "E.T. Phone Home" brings emotion to people of a certain age.Not a fan of E.T.. Sorry, guys. Maybe I was the wrong age (almost 17) when it came out but it just didn't do anything for me.
I was 7 or 8, and the little ******* scared the crap out of me. The scene with him in the closet gave me nightmares. LOL.I just saw it in the theater a week ago. It's still great, IMO. But I'm very biased. I was an 11 y.o. when it came out so I imprinted on it like a duckling.
Yes.Do you think telling what the formula is would be spotlighting somehow?
I think especially for movies that came out around those ages for all of us, and there is a big difference for how we probably will react to something like E.T. if it was something that came out when we were 10 or 11 or if we were a teenager or older. Even those 4-5 would make a big difference for loving a movie like that.No need to be sorry - there will be top movies that all of us don't like. Can’t imagine why you’d think The Godfather would be an issue. It’s one of my favorite movies, as is one of its sequels (I’ll let you guess which one).
Well, to be fair - I only included it because Hags and I picked it and I didn't want to seem mean. You are right - joffer and higgins are dummies and Hags and I are brilliant. Can’t imagine why you’d think The Godfather would be an issue. It’s one of my favorite movies, as is one of its sequels (I’ll let you guess which one).
I like Die Hard as well. Not sure of its value as #2 overall, as I’m not sure what the canon of action movies is considered to be. I think some of the ones that immediately come to mind as great action flicks will get sucked into the other categories such as war, crime, comic book (I don’t know if the latter two are actual categories but you get my drift), so it could be a top pick when it all shakes out.
ET:![]()
Fall of '82 I was driving all over the place and really feeling early freedom, so maybe that was part of it. I did take a date to see it, though, so I tried. I guess I felt I was too 'old' for the concept of the story, and I remember the scene when they found E.T. laying in a ditch or wherever it was and I thought he looked like a cat turd. Really couldn't take it in the vein it was intended. No need to be sorry - there will be top movies that all of us don't like. I think that's intentionally symbolic too. Responsibility shows up in our life and it's scary just like when ET shows up in Elliot's. But we find out that accepting that responsibility is actually empowering.I was 7 or 8, and the little ******* scared the crap out of me. The scene with him in the closet gave me nightmares. LOL.
We watch it every Halloween as a family tradition.I give you ####, AD but that's some good posting breaking down E.T. like that. It's not a movie that stuck with me, so I've never really given it a ton of thought that way.![]()
You have kids, right? Do they like E.T.?
Is this where declare that E.T. is not a Halloween movie? We watch it every Halloween as a family tradition.
Nice pick - Capella likes this
I am right there with you, but in addition to that I have never seen The Godfather.1st round is making me feel like a movie rookie. I think I've seen 2 bond movies, both Daniel Craig ones.
Casino Royale is solid1st round is making me feel like a movie rookie. I think I've seen 2 bond movies, both Daniel Craig ones.
Were you the bloke that said he was going to watch all the "greatest ever" movies selected in the draft?I am right there with you, but in addition to that I have never seen The Godfather.
