The Great 2020 All Time Television Draft: The Simpsons is judged the greatest show of all time (2 Viewers)

TV Detectives: The two guys who you really want solving the crime.

15 Points: Lenny Briscoe

Besides Andy Sipowicz (who would have done well in this list too), likely the most “real” portrayal of a detective I’ve seen. No nonsense, somewhat world-weary/seen it all, but always got the job done. Fun fact:  In the early/mid 90’s, I worked as a private detective’s assistant for a year. He was a retired (and somewhat famous) NYPD detective, and he was also the main consultant for Law and Order – he kept the show real.

16 Points: Frank Columbo

There has never been a better TV detective. The neat thing is, we knew who the bad guy was 5 minutes into the show, but following Columbo as he asked “just one more thing” to figure it all out was a delight. #1 with a bullet.

TV Detectives - The two fun guys

Now we have the two fun guys. Iconic, decade-defining characters and great shows both.

13 points: Jim Rockford

Rockford was cool and fun. He wasn’t glamourous, and the bill collectors called a lot, but it was the 70’s. Everyone was broke.

14 points: Thomas Sullivan Magnum III

Magnum was even cooler and more fun than Rockford. Of course, existing in the technicolor 80’s over the gritty 70’s helped. So did living in Hawaii.

Magnum was my pick. Hope nobody has a problem with this ranking. I've judged in a ton of these, and will usually penalize my own pick some to eliminate my own bias. I did not do that in this case, because I think he's fairly ranked.
I picked Rockford, and would have taken Magnum over him if given the chance.

TV Detectives: The cool and the quirky

11 Points: Adrian Monk

Quirky, funny… just a fantastic character. I didn’t get too much into awards in this list, but Tony Shalhoub has won a bunch of Emmys here.
I thought Shawn Spencer was a much more enjoyable character and Psych a much better show than Monk.  I can understand discounting Shawn and where he finished but don't see Monk as much different of a character.  I recently watched some Monk and the show was a bit redundant at times and wasn't nearly the show I remembered from its initial viewing.  Psych had held up much better as basically an identical show.

TV Detective - The underpaid four

3 Points: Shawn Spencer

I thought Patrick Jane did it better, so Shawn’s not even the best quasi-psychic detective out there. Maybe if I didn’t watch The Mentalist first I’d like him better.
I really liked both shows and characters but I fall on the other side of the fence and liked Shawn/Psych better.  Yes it was a bit sillier but the cleverness and pop culture tie backs were awesome.  The character was just more entertaining to me.

this is just wrong. Thomas Magnum is based on a character Selleck played on The Rockford Files, Lance White. In episodes involving Lance, he'd show up on a case in an immaculate white Eldo convertible, miss all the clues while making thoroughgoing & adorable pronouncements about how to solve it, breeze past the toughs, brush off the damsels to leave Rockford taking it in the teeth on both accounts and then swoop in for the credit once the real detective had done all the dirty work. to leave Jim holding posterity's bag as well is just wrong. have no prob with a high ranking of Magnum, he's just gotta be behind Rockfish

If it's worth anything, I have this queued up to watch from the beginning while on my treadmill.

Maybe you shouldn't have waited on the results until after the viewing...hahhahaa.

I have watched the series a few times and it's great to watch if you have an hour to kill.  I am probably a little more biased because it's my daughters absolute favorite show and we use lines and looks from the show all the time.  It was a really well done show with it's pop culture cleverness and interactions between Gus and Shawn.  I thought about trying to draft them as a pair for this category because of how well they played off each other.

Excellent rankings jwb. How would you have ranked Tony Baretta?  He was my other guy I was debating to take instead of Mannix.

Heh, before I read the word "Mannix" I thought "right around Mannix". IIRC, Tony was somewhat a more updated version of Mannix - full on 70's vibe instead of partial.

He might have been a bit higher, because in these drafts, I will often give a bump to picks that defined time periods / stand out / will have name recognition 20/30 years later, as opposed to being a good show in a sea of good shows. I was a kid in the 70's, but I knew who Baretta was - all the kids did. My nieces and nephews today have no idea who Bosch is (not picking on Bosch - just making a statement on time periods and how it's a little harder to stand out today in pop culture.)

I think recent shows are at a significant disadvantage over the older shows due to the sheer volume of choices to watch.  It's not like the 70's where there were only a few shows so everyone knew every character on TV.  That is impossible now no matter how good the show is.

ETA:  There were three detectives I have never heard of (and who have never been in my kitchen) and they all ranked fairly high.   I believe they are all recent show characters (Tennison, Cohle, and Peralta) but I have no idea what show they were on or who they are.  However, even though I don't remember a lot about Kojak's character and not sure if I ever watched an episode I know he loves me baby.

Aunt Bee way higher than Catwoman? It's time to turn in your Man Card.

Otherwise, great job.

Ten-point value here (taken 12th in the category)
This was who I wanted - I love Lenny and I've probably watched more Law & Order than any other show ever (20 years and I think I've watched each episode 2-3 times).

8 points: Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch)

This is a fine portrayal of a classic character. The “classic” part I have to ignore though (Holmes has been around forever), and judge it on the 13 episodes. This is where he fits.
If you just asked me for the best acting job of the bunch, it would be this.  Cumberbatch is just outstanding.  I would love to see him continue this role for a long time but not sure if he has any interest.

Since I have 4 sets of rankings for 91-20 Supporting Man, I have a bunch of ties that need to be broken (NO TIES ALLOWED).

Either I need one more person to step up and give me another set of rankings, or I’ll reach out to an impartial non-drafter to break our 4 ties - @krista4 maybe?

TIA

This pick by higgins hurts.  Second taken in Category, picked in the 5th round.

I would help but there are 7 names in that list that I really know nothing about.  I would put those all at the end.  I am sure that's fine right?

Depends on if one of them is mine.  😉

I think we’ll be ok with aaa stepping up.

Wat

They would send him the script. He'd say "no, a detective would do this / say that / go in this direction" etc. And his changes generally got followed
Jerry Orbach was a master craftsman. Highly acclaimed Broadway actor known for his versatility long before he became a small screen legend. Just a great New Yorker. L&O shot one my Brooklyn neighborhood several times. Everyone would hide in their trailers with security in front of the door; Jerry would walk down the block to the bodega, pick up a coffee regular and a paper, chat people up. Always on the level, never had any airs about him.

I understand that. I was being facetious. I wish that had done the same with lawyers and the courtroom nonsense they presented in the show. I like the show overall but the courtroom scenes are cringe-worthy. It's like they consulted with a law student who do an externship at a PD firm for like a week. Some of the legal issues presented were decent and relatively on point, but the application of the rules of evidence, direct and cross-examination techniques, etc. are laughably bad and unrealistic.

The "wat" was based on my assumption that they were similarly inaccurate with investigations.

due to a long association with perennial shows like The Fantasticks & Promises, Promises, i believe he held the record for most NY musical stage appearances at one time.

I knew he had passed, but I didn't realize it had been 16 years. I guess because the L&Os are on syndication so often ... seems like Orbach keeps living on somehow.

ah, I get it.

I was never a cop, so I have to take other's word for it. But yes, you would definitely know more about the courtroom stuff.

Would Gil Grissom have counted as detective. Wanted to get him in but wasnt sure
I also thought about picking the CSI theme song too and wonder how that would have faired in the standings.

CSI is one network show I watched religiously. It was an every week thing for me. I would he hard pressed to tell you what the theme song sounded like

Can I ask for some help with both sci-fi and horror? If anyone wants to send a 1-16 (comments optional), I'd appreciate it. It's impossible to give a completely fair shake to the several shows I am unfamiliar with. I'll watch a little, but I'd appreciate other's opinions to balance my own.

I can help with Sci-fi, not so sure about horror.

Hey @krista4 what categories did I say I’d give you rankings for?

I’ll be done with the 91-20 supporting categories tomorrow at some point and can start looking at other stuff.
