The IOP Invitational (1 Viewer)

The IOP Invitational Draft starts today. It's a showcase league for what the FPL Championship group hopes to be a new home for those looking for a stiff IDP-centric challenge. The lineups and scoring system are meant to push owners to give equal weight to almost any starting position at any point in the draft.

Here are links to the MFL home page, scoring system and draft page.

FBG staffers Sigmund Bloom and Matt Waldman are joining me. The league will have some of the best football and IDP minds in the industry, including Matt Williamson (ESPN), Evan Silva (Rotoworld), Mike Clay (PFF), Matt Schauf (DraftSharks), Tony Nowak (FF Today), Joe Everett (Fantasy Exchange), Chet Gresham (Razzball), Justin Heberle (Rotoworld) and Jeff Ratcliffe (PFF).

I'm really interested to see how this draft goes.

This league, and NFL.com's new IDP fantasy feature, both allow you to score points for quarterback hits. I haven't seen that before this year. Very few sites even list how many quarterback hits a defender accumulates. ESPN, NFL.com, StatsPass, Pro Football Reference all don't list this stat. Did you try to factor in QH value in your projections, or are you using projected sacks as a proxy as there's a high degree of correlation between the two stats for most players not named Antonio Smith?

I'm generally adding it onto my sack projections but also giving a slight bump within a given tier to players with more aggressive roles, i.e. those ILBs and safeties and rare CBs used significantly more as blitzers than their counterparts.

I'm going to have to look closely at the rules of a league where Jason Witten goes first overall.

Okay, 1.5 per reception and 0.15 per receiving yard for TEs.

It's interesting to see the positions chosen:

Waldman: Witten

Bloom: Jared Allen, Suh

Bramel: Rice, Finley

Through 21 picks:

5 TEs, 4 DEs, 1 DT, 2 QBs, 6 RBs, 3 WRs.

Wow. What a fun draft, Jene. This is the type of league I set out looking for last year when I went all in. I never found anything quite this nuts/different, but I have done a 180 on tweaked rules. I used to think they just screwed everything up, but now, for me anyway, they've preserved my interest in playing FF. I think Witten is slowing down and his numbers last year indicative of issues Dallas is movinge past so other TEs will outperform him, but I LOVE that pick and Matt's first corner... Willis Mayo. Nice. Suh was a great pick too.

Good luck with all that. I may just run these rules by the guys I auctioned with last night and see if they have a few more bucks for another shot at me.

I looked a the scoring for this earlier and loved it. It gives so many twists and options on how you could build your team. Would love to get into a dynasty league with a scoring setup like this. Will be interesting to watch this league to see how the season unfolds.

Reasonably happy with my roster so far. Might have made a luxury pick at RB2 with Mathews, but I like the flex upside there, then couldn't pass up Boldin given the drop in WR tier there. The Mathews pick cost me Ray Edwards (or Cliff Avril) unfortunately. Have multiple players on bye in both Week 5 and 6, but I'm hoping to remedy that with good depth picks.

So far, I think the scoring system has done what I'd hoped: Put owners to a decision between multiple positions at every pick.

QB Brees

RB Rice / Mathews

WR Jackson / Bryant / Boldin

TE Finley

DE Johnson

DT

LB Hawthorne / Ryans

CB

SF Ward
