THE JEEP THREAD > All Things Jeep (2 Viewers)

My 2000 Xterra's A/C has crapped out. Fixing it is probably worth more than the car is worth. I've been wanting a Jeep Wrangler for years.

However, I'm confused as to the differences in the models (Rubicon, Sahara, etc.) The Jeep website doesn't clearly explain it.

I do know that I want a smoother ride, automatic, 4WD, two-doors, soft top and good gas mileage. I will primarily be driving 60% on city streets, 40% on highways.

Any input as to the main differences between models (explained as if I were a five-year-old) would be a huge help.

Also, I'm not opposed to buying used. Which years are the best years for buying a used Jeep? Which models should I avoid for the "death rattle?"

TIA

This is a little late, but if you want good gas mileage, then I don't think a Wrangler is a good choice. They are rated 14/19, or 15/20 or so.

Bought a 2012 Wrangler about 18 months ago. Go to get my tires rotated and forget where my jeep wheel lock is? Where do they put these things when you buy your Wrangler the first time? I bought it new.

Need some solid FBG Jeep advice.I have a 2008 Wrangler JK (Sahara), 2 door, soft top.My side windows have been giving me fits lately. Last night the right rear panel window finally decided not to attach, it's next to impossible to get the zipper to catch. It's the part of the zipper on the window itself, where you connect to the zipper, it seems to have a decent tear under it so it won't slide into the zipper.I did some research this morning and don't see to many sites online where I can purchase just the rear panel windows without purchasing a full set. The back window is in good condition so I don't want to spend $ to replace it just because.Any suggestions fellas?TIA
If it's damaged take it to a shop that works on zippers. If it's beyond repair you have to get a whole set unless you try sites like ProjectJK and craigslist to find a set used.

Rubicon = Top of the line with major Offroad Upgrades (4:1 transfer case, 4.11 axle gears, electronic swaybar disconnects). If you plan on taking it offroad this is the package. Sahara = Cosmetic upgrades like body colored fenders and I think maybe even a body colored hard top? I dunno for sure. It's generally "Pretty" upgradesSmoother Ride? Keep in mind a wrangler is a solid front axle vehicle... they aren't built for a smooth ride. They're built to get you from Point A to Point B no matter what Is inbeteween. Good Gas Mileage? Keep looking. The new Pentastar is better I think, but overall a wrangler is going to be in the teens for gas mileage around town. Again, this is not a "practical" vehicle. It's about as aerodynamic as a brick. Death Rattle? I guess you're talking about death wobble. :) That's inherent in a large tired Solid Front Axle vehicle. No years or models are more/less prone to it. A bout of it is coming on with my jeep right now. It's not the end of the world but diagnosing it can be a bit tedious at times. 1) Make sure your front end is in alignment and tires are properly inflated/rotated and balanced. This cures 90% of issues. 2) After that you're looking at a loose track bar or some worn steering components. If you don't know what you're doing I'd find a good shop or mechanic. It's not hard, it just involves understanding the steering assembly on a jeep and knowing where to look for play/slop.

No idea. My TJ doesn't have any newfangled wheel locks :lmao:

Thanks Icon. I will have take it to the dealership and see if they can fix it or if they have any extra windows laying around they might be willing to sell. If not I will just order a new set.

Bought a 2013 two-door Wrangler Sport. Came with the Freedom Top. Black with black interior. :excited:

It did not come with side steps. So looking online now for options. Also, do I need a locking gas cap?

I'm also thinking about getting another top to put on it for those cloudy days in case it starts raining so that I can protect the interior in a flash.

The Freedom Top is too much of a hassle. We barely got the back end off as it is. I can't fathom having to put it on and off depending on the weather.

Any recommendations as to the style/brand?

TIA!
Factory softop (Check craigslist or contact your dealer and ask about anyone who bought a dual top who might want to sell their soft top)Bestop Trektop NX

I wouldn't sweat the locking gas cap.. never had fuel stolen in 6+ years at this point.

Congrats on the purchase! I'd also suggest a Tuffy Locking Glovebox or Center console to give you a little lockable storage inside.

I'd be hesitant to lock the jeep with the soft top on... thieves will slash your windows to get in... and they aren't cheap. I just leave my jeep unlocked at all times... and I just don't leave anything of value in it.

So I have an 06 Jeep Wrangler that I bought brand new. In the 6 years that I've owned it, I've put 8,200 miles on it. I keep it in the garage and it's practically in mint condition.

Earlier this week I got the registration fee and insurance bill on the same day. I realized it probably isn't worth keeping since I'm not justifying the cost (even though it's paid off).

If you were going to try and sell a Jeep privately, where would you list it?

Craigslist, Ebay, AutoTrader?Depending on model and such, I'd look out local Jeep Club forums and post it there (unless it's a 2WD model).

One of the new models? They're slick. I've rented one. Not sure of much outside that.

Heard good and bad, most of the bad was in realtion to models from the 90s and early 00s. Haven't heard much re: newer models. Why a Jeep instead of the equivalent Ford/ Chevy/ Toyota/ etc?

They don't put a v8 anymore in any of the mid-size SUV's...The only mid-size SUV's with V8's are the Grand Cherokee and the Durango and the Land Rover LR4.The Volkswagon Tourareg is the only vehicle with similar towing capacity.. it only has a v6 but has a tow rating of 7700.i have a boat, my trailblazer tows it with a lot of stress currently.. it tows 5500 pounds, i'm guessing the boat/trailer with gas/gear weighs about 4500 lbs and so while it's rated to tow it, it doesn't perform strongly. Most of the SUV's now are rated even lower at 5000 or 4500 lbs... they just don't build them for real towing/offroading anymore.. the SUV is just a grocery getter for mom's that are revolting against the minivan.

Well I guess of your choices are a Durango, a Touareg or a Land Rover, I'd choose the Jeep too. Surprised that the Grand Cherokee would be considered "midsize"-- what towing capacity does it have? Also, why not just buy a crew cab 4x4 pickup? Not that I'm trying to discourage Jeeps in the Jeep thread, mind you...

I'm surprised by the towing capacity of the Grand Cherokee as well. It's definitely midsize but it's still not a big vehicle.

well my classification is: small size is like Honda CRVMid size is like Explorer, grand cherokee, durango, 4 runner, pilotfull size, tahoe, expedition, suburban, sequoiaI don't really want a pickup, that's the answer to that question. I like having a mid-size SUV, I just want one with some towing power! And those choices are fairly limited.they used to put a v8 in the pathfinder, explorer, 4 runner... but no more.the v8 tow capacity of a Cherokee is about 7200-7400 i believe...shockingly the V6 Tourareg is 7700

Isn't the Touareg essentially a Porsche Cayenne with VW decals? Nifty turbo V6 I've heard nice things about, but IIRC the price tag on the Touareg is just ridiculous...Just out of curiousity Dentist, would you use the Grand Cherokee offroad? I've always marveled at the guys who go out and spend megabucks on a nice rig with good OR capability and then are too scared to take it offroad cuz they don't want to pick up any "desert pinstriping"

very limited OR usage. some up at my dad's farm, but really i buy an SUV for:1) general hauling of some stuff around... like after a big costco or lowes run2) comfortable travel for 4 people3) towing the boat or ATV's... and since anything can tow the ATV's, it's mainly the boat that i care about. The Touareg isn't THAT much more expensive than a V8 Grand Cherokee with a few nice options.I don't know much about the Touareg, and I'm really not sure I want "german engineering" or a VW anyway.

I think it's safe to say we've decided on the Grand Cherokee. Enjoy. And find some time/places to use it OR. Your life will be better for it.

wow, they are throwing a Diesel option into the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee... much better gas mileage and same towing capacity.I've never owned a diesel engine... what is everyone's thoughts on diesel?

and accidentally dump regular fuel in? given that she forgets to turn off her hair straightener to the point I demanded she get one with auto shut off, forgets to turn the oven off about 50% of the time, forgets to turn the stove off 20% of the time, and forgets about food that's IN the oven a lot.. i'd say HIGH

After driving a coupe / sports coupe for the last 15 years (Honda Prelude followed by Infiniti G35 6MT then G37s), I'm going back to my roots - getting a Wrangler Unlimited. Have it on order, deposit down - Billet Silver, basically loaded other than no max tow package and decided to go with mesh, not leather seats. Have the dual and matching tops, will certainly look to do some offroad, but it's mostly going to be a general driver, top down on nice days, good in the snow and some camping / light off roading (so don't see need for a Rubicon, for example).

Any suggestions, recommendations for a Wrangler noob?

Would post pics of the new car and my first two cars - both Jeeps (1978 or 9 Wagoneer, 1983-5 Wagoneer) if I could figure out links on the new boards. <_<

Got the wife the Outlander version. Very sweet - rides great, nice sound system, love the big screen with all the features. I will get to drive it when I take her to dinner or long vacation rides.

Consider me jealous.

I'm waiting for the kids to get older, so I am not sinking every dime I have in them so I can get a Wrangler again. I bought a new '99 Wrangler as my first vehicle when I started working out of college. Sold it less than two years later when I got married. She got pregnant right away and the rear facing child seat didn't fit in the back. Been wanting one again ever since.

I need some advice from you pros and hope to join your cult shortly. My daughter should get her license in the next few weeks, so we'll be in the market for another car. I would like to spend around $20,000 and have something "fun" for me. The guy that sold me my last 3 GM vehicles works for a dealer that also has a Chrysler/Jeep lot attached and they have a few used Jeep Wranglers in stock. Unlike most car salesmen, I trust this guy and would like to give him the business versus going the Craig's List/eBay/classified route.

The two Jeeps I am looking at are both 2010s. One has 25,000 miles on it and is listed for $21,500, the other has 48,000 and is listed for $18,500. It seems like a no brainer that the lower mileage vehicle is the better deal (before any price negotiation), as the lower miles me warranty coverage, less future maintenance, etc. Am I looking at this the right way? Also, while I trust the guy there, are there tell-tale signs that Jeep have been beat upon by the prior owner? I would like to know where to look for concerns in case I want to have them looked at by a mechanic other than the dealer's.

Part of the reason for looking at the Jeep, is that I want something that would be very easy to put my kayak on without a rack. I Googled up things and it appears that with a bit of padding, kayaks can be placed right on top of the Jeep (with the soft top pulled down) and tied down to the tie downs on the hood in the front and off the hitch in the rear. Anyone have feedback on if this is possible and if there a chance doing this would harm the vehicle and/or make the kayak a projectile?

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

My Sahara Unlimited is built! Awesome emails from the factory - too bad the dealership is crap. If it weren't so closely located and gave me a good price I'd have kept shopping.

Have been debating weather I should have bulked up the off road goodies, but this will mostly be a road and snow and some generally light/moderate off road so should be fine, not to mention the top down factor. Hope to get it in a few weeks.

Can I check in here?

Last Friday just purchased a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo.

The UConnect system was the major selling point for me. Straight awesomeness and the major reason I went with the brand new model since I've always bought used cars.

Should I be going mudding and stuff in this thing, or something like that?

All things JEEP?

I terribly miss* my 1992 Jeep Grand Wagoneer... RIP GB

* - I do not miss the gas mileage however (approx 8-10mpg... 4-6 in 4wd)... but gawddamn that thing was an absolute tank and I loved the two JGWs I owned...

Those with more experience than I should chime in, but as I understand it, pretty much any Jeep can handle mudding and offroading - but if you want to go more hardcore offroading, rocks etc, then you probably want some mods depending on which axle etc. you have, tires and the like.

GOT IT!

Ended up going with the Leather and also automatic start (why not, heat them seats before I get in dammit!). Some pics of her first moments driving home from the dealership:

HTF? Ok, maybe stupid me, not stupid board. Or both.

And thanks. BIG change - first non sports car (or close), first automatic for 20 years. Loving it so far.

Need to know some good (inexpensive) options to spruce her up. Saw some nice break light cages for under $100. Would LOVE black wheels, but unless I get a really good deal or find a pair of used wheels / tires not going to be worth it, especially since it's a lease.
