49ers Accuse Jets Of Tampering With Crabtree

The San Francisco 49ers have filed tampering charges against the Jets regarding receiver Michael Crabtree(notes), the New York Daily News reports.

Crabtree has been threatening to sit out the entire season and re-enter the draft in 2010. The 49ers believe the Jets contacted Crabtree’s agent, Eugene Parker, to let them know they’d be interested in trading for his rights or drafting him in 2010 with a better salary than the 49ers are offering, the Daily News reports.

The 49ers must either sign Crabtree by Nov. 19 or surrender his rights, putting him back in the draft pool for 2010.

Jets G.M. Mike Tannenbaum declined to comment Sunday. Teams can be fined and/or docked draft picks if they are found guilty of tampering.

The Denver Broncos recently expressed concerns that the Jets had tampered with receiver Brandon Marshall(notes), who had told the Broncos he wanted to be traded. However, the Broncos never filed formal charges against the Jets, and Marshall is back with Denver this season.

Other receivers whom the Jets have been interested in, according to the newspaper, are Plaxico Burress(notes) and Percy Harvin(notes), who went to the Vikings in the draft.

Crabtree and the 49ers have been mired in an acrimonious contract dispute. The team offered the 22-year-old from Texas Tech a five-year contract worth $20 million with a reported $16 million guaranteed. Crabtree, the No. 10 overall pick in April’s NFL draft, has been demanding that he get a deal similar to that of No. 7 pick Darrius Heyward-Bey(notes), who received a five-year deal from the Oakland Raiders worth $25 million with $19 million guaranteed.

Former 49ers great Jerry Rice said on Sunday that even if Crabtree and the 49ers were to reach a deal by the trade deadline, the young receiver probably wouldn’t do much good for the team this season.

"It's just unfortunate," Rice said on the field at Candlestick Park before Sunday's Seahawks-49ers game. "And it doesn't look like they're getting anywhere close to coming to an agreement. This guy's way behind, way behind. I'm talking the speed of the game, everything. If they brought him in right now, I don't think he's going to be ready to play."

Mike and Mike interviewed Rex this morning and Rex was pretty funny. Something to the effect of, "I have something to say but I won't on radio...it's ridiculous." Then he said, "I wish we were playing them."

:thumbup: - every past infraction as to the injury report has been a fine. The penalty was perfectly in line. As for this allegation - doubt anything comes of it unless there is more proof - this stuff happens all the time..
 
Good luck on this one. Tampering is pretty difficult to prove. It's beyond obvious that the Vikings talked to Favre while he was still a Packer and even more obvious that the Redskins had struck a deal with Haynesworth long before free agency began. To my knowledge, both teams got off scot free.

I doubt the 49ers will get very far with this.

 
So to summarize some of the hypocrisy in this short thread so far, it's that the Jets can't get a break, Ryan blames the 49ers, penalizing the Jets more than anyone else had been penalized in the past would have been wrong, and all of the other teams do it, too. Awesome.

Singletary would OWN Fat Rexy in the octagon. I'll say this...........Crabtree (and his management team) have got to be the dumbest group I've ever seen. I'm not saying the Jets have done anything wrong here, BUT........it would not surprise me that "somebody" has been blowing smoke up Crabtree's camp azzes. (i.e. they'd be willing to pay more than the niners have offered/ect/ect). If it turns out to be the Jets (or whoever), they deserve to get punished/lose picks.
 
By tampering they have essentially robbed the 49ers of a high first round pick. If true, this is ridiculous and the Jets must have picks docked, preferably as a "reimbursment" to the 49ers for essentially nullifying the 49ers pick this year.

 
I would love to see him go back in the draft and have the NFL owners collude to not draft him until RD 6 next year

I can not fathom turning a contract like that down. These guys need to get over themselves

ETA: If he was worth the top pick money, he would have been a top pick

If true, then while I agree that the Jets should be penalized, the 49ers should have taken care of this long ago. Never should have gotten to this point. Aside from possibly trading for his rights, how do the Jets expect to be in position to draft him and pay him more? Do they expect him to fall to the end of the 1st because he held out this year - and then they'll go completely against the standard salaries for rookies (based by pick)?

This just seems like a bridge too far to be motivation for them to tamper. Too many things have to line up just right to get him. Or they expect the team that they're tampering with to trade with them? I won't say this didn't happen, but if it did it's either a horrible plan or a conversation that went too far. I could certainly see where someone he knows could say something along the lines of "man, you deserve more $, the Jets would have paid it for sure and they could use you..." but I don't see how someone went in with the intent of tampering in order to benefit the Jets.

How does it not benefit the Jets for a player they like to become available in next year's draft?Or suppose they are goading him into asking for a trade, which seems like a better option for the 49ers than just letting him fall back into the draft.

Niners got caught tampering with Lance Briggs, and paid for it with (I believe) a 3rd round pick going to the Bears.Yes it's tough to prove, and I'm not saying it's true (disclosure: I'm a Niner fan), but it wouldn't surprise me if it did happen, that the Crabtree camp extended their current display of stupidity to reveal this in some way when discussions took place with the Niners. Or they sent an email to the Jets with a subject of "$40 million next year right?" and accidentally CC'd Roger Goodell.

The theory is that before August 14 -- the Jets either indicated to Crabtree's camp that if they could swing a deal for him they would pay him like the top 7 pick Crabtree thinks he is OR they told him if they couldn't swing a deal he would go higher next year.Back at that time, Denver also thought NYJ were tampering withBrandon Marshall.Now the Jets can't trade for Crabtree until after the season. But before, many thought that the Jets needed another WR. Remember, Deion reported that two teams were interested in trading from Crabtree and paying him what he wanted. Presumably, someone from the Crabtree camp told Deion -- who is employed by NFLN.If true, then the Jets should be punished. But even if Crabtree just imagined it, can't think of a worse way for the season to start for Crabtree. Jets and 49ers both 2-0.

It is no secret the Jets want a top flight receiver; so perhaps they asked him to get himself traded; who knows

I assume that's what the 49ers are accusing him of. It's likely if Crabtree were to go into the draft next year, he would fall to the Jets, wherever they drafted in the 1st round, even if it's at the end of the round. Who would risk a 1st rounder on the guy for fear they couldn't sign him? So when next year rolls around and the Jets draft say 25th overall (looks like they're going to have a good season), and they select Crabtree and give him top 5ish money, we'll know what they were up to.

Just like a good combine can cause a player's stock to rise (see Mike Mamula), a bad combine can cause a players stock to drop (see Andre Smith). Crabtree wasn't able to work out at the combine because of injury. That alone can could have caused him to drop to 10. Does anyone really think that Kevin Dyson was a better reciever then Randy Moss?
 
If this is not true, the 49ers should be penalized. You shouldn't be allowed to falsely accuse people without having to pay a penalty.

During Spygate and all the false-accusations, we heard alot of "Where there's smoke, there must be fire" around these parts.

Seems there's alot of smoke coming out of Jets Headquarters recently. I hope your glass house is insured, Jets fans.

I'm not claiming to be naive, but thanks for the assistance.I have no doubt that the NYJ picked him up to gather some info from him, but that's not illegal. But it's not like he was filming the call's the coaches put in, then switched to the down/distance and back to the gameplay...

Because that as we all know is illegal, and who would do a thing like that?

Speculation is just that until it is confirmed, by the league/commish office. So as for now, the Jets have done nothing wrong or illegal....in either of the matters he originally discussed. And if proven they have, then yes...punishment should be handed down.

Nothing wrong if you consider tampering accusations with two separate teams for the same position nothing wrong. Must just be a crazy coincidence. Mangina's dark karma cloud is hanging around that locker room, folks.

I didn't read the whole article, but it sounded like maybe two or three teams were the "number" of front offices. And I gotta assume one of those "number" of teams is the 49'ers themselves.
 
Potentially undermining the entire draft process through this kind of alleged tampering is a pretty serious offense.

 
Wait...So the speculation here is that the Jets called Crabtree after he was picked and offered him 40mil? :angry: Or to sit out till 2010 so the Jets can draft him and pay him 40 mil?

An no this isn't worse than "spygate" regardless of what Charles Robinson or his unnamed front office contacts say.

I still can't figure that out either.But a team that formally files tampering charges doesn't do it lightly anymore since they can be penalized by Goodell for false tampering claims. The 49ers are taking a risk if they can't prove that the Jets tampered. That's really the only reason I think that the Jets might be guilty.

Or they have just enough evidence to avoid getting penalized and to distract everyone from the lack of progress on getting a contract. :shrug:
 
do the jets ever stop cheating?

I know that franchise isn't the best, but could they possibly at least try to play on a level field with the rest of the nfl, without doing all this tampering, injury report manipulation, and buying playbooks to win games?
