Agree on all. I just started listening to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History and Im addicted. He makes history fun. I have no idea why I didnt start listening to him until recently as Im an avid history reader. I'm over 20 hours in on his stuff on the Pacific war.

In my humble opinion, Carlin's magnum opus is Blueprint for Armageddon. You have to pay for it now but if you are an enterprising young man, you can find the episodes for free on the inner webs. Regardless of how you listen to it, you just have to. Probably the best thing I've ever listened to, so much so I've gifted it to my brother and listened to it a couple of times myself. Just a masterpiece.

A close second is Darryl Cooper's Fear and Loathing in the New Jerusalem. Would have never even known he existed until I heard his name mentioned in a throw away line either on Jocko's or Rogan's podcast. His Martyrmade Podcast is a constant in my rotation. He did a great one on Jim Jones recently.

I didn't read it this way. Surely Neil Young knew that Spotify has a multiyear $100m+ contract with Joe Rogan. The quote I read is that he asked his agent to have his music removed from Spotify, and obviously Spotify has to comply.

Neil Young is just trying to push a discussion about something he cares about.  He knows Spotify wouldn't drop Rogan.  I wouldn't be surprised if Rogan and Spotify were in on this before it was announced.  It gives them all publicity.  Rogan & Spotify get people noticing where to find the show, and NY gets people realizing he's not dead yet.

True, although pop culture works a little differently nowadays. Icons from the '50s and '60s have remained influential to subsequent generations. So, the analogy isn't quite apples-to-apples (clarinets-to-guitars?).

To put it another way: the number of Joe Rogan listeners who like Neil Young's music is greater than the number of [insert 1980s pop artist] listeners who liked Benny Goodman's music.

Nonetheless, I agree with the basic principle of your analogy. Neil Young outkicked his coverage here.

Fair enough.  To be clear, I like Neil. His place in the history of rock music is unquestioned. But this isn't Bowie, or Prince. 

I don't think his stance is going to lose Spotify many listeners, because I don't think he is musically relevant at this point in history. You have a 70 year old (doesn't look a day over 90) Canadian rocker, going after the #1 podcast in the world.  Neil Young: 6 mill streams every month. Joe Rogan: 100 million plus.

As someone pointed out above, he sold half his publishing rights for 150 mill, so he can really afford to tell Spotify to kick rocks. What is 20 to 30 grand per month from Spotify, which he has to split, when he got paid 150 mill? Neil doesn't need Spotify. 

It occurs that perhaps the people that own half his publishing rights might not be thrilled that Johnny Protest is cutting off Spotify, and maybe that's why he deleted the letter he posted. 

All in all, he simply wound up looking silly. And that sucks.

I really wish is Common Sense podcast was still going on. That was the only political focused podcast at the time that I felt was true to fairness and honesty around modern politics. He was great at saying "folks, I know X is doing this now...but its was from the same playbook when Y did it during the Regan years, and here's why....and this was the outcome..." 

It really blunted a lot of the polarization around modern political posturing

I think artists are in a real tough spot here. Today, spotify has got to be the main driver for artists and their revenues. 
Touring isnt back to what it use to be, traditional radio is dead, even though Spotify pays very poorly in comparison, it really is the big dog on the block.

The podcast he hosts almost triples the highest ratings of mainstream media. He has a job commentating for the fastest growing sport in the world. He’s also building and opening up a comedy club in Texas. You may not like his politics and you may not think he’s funny but dude knows how to make money. He’s essentially built himself a $500 million empire.

I don’t get all the heat for the guy myself. I roll my eyes at some things he says he, he admits that he’s not very bright all the time, he is as humble as they come and he’s also genuinely sweet and honest with everybody he speaks with, even his detractors.

How did some one not relevant sell (only) 50% of the rights to his music catalog for $150MM just a little over a year ago?

this is me.  my BIL, has LOVED him for years.  so i gave him a shot years ago, way before covid and before 2020.  hell, maybe before 2016.  anyway, i just don't like his schtick.  he's not for me.

the BIL's wife, hates the JRE.  she says she didn't realize she was marrying joe rogan too.     some of the political BS has lessened my BIL's love for him.  but he's still a fanboy

I odn't know why you keep saying this.  He tours regularly and has a few Netflix specials.  He definitely made it as a comedian.

I really dug him early on.   He would have great interviews in the past. But haven't really listened in a long time and dont agree with his current stances.      Like take marijuana and cbd for example.   He was big proponent on using it for health and recovery but he did it in a way where if you didnt agree with him at least it made you think about it in a thoughtful matter.  I used to enjoy his takes on comedy/cancel etc and would agree with some stuff and disagree with other.   But it always felt to be coming from a intellectual thought provoking style.

Now it just feels like a glorified political podcast which I dont enjoy.   Thats just my opinion.  But there are many guys I used to really enjoy that I dont follow anymore for one reason or the other, so its not just him

This is true but the one difference is that in the 80s new music was really thriving. That’s not the case now. Data shows that the interest  in new music has really slowed down and for the first time ever, older music is far more popular than newer music.

Young sold 50% of the song publishing royalties. He still owns the recordings he made which gives him the ability to pull them from Spotify.  Covers of his songs will still pay songwriter royalties to Young and the co-owners.  The publishing royalty rate is only about 1/3 of the mechanical royalties paid for use of the recording.  Streaming royalty rates are very low so 1/3rd of that isn't very much.

Young's music wasn't getting a lot of streams anyway ( @Pip's Invitation notwithstanding).  I expect he'll be able to cover his streaming losses in the short term by more sales of physical media which have a much higher royalty rate than streaming does.

Are they making vinyl pressings of his best albums?  I would like to buy some.  Sure vintage is cool, but I don't mind supporting artists that I like, even if they are already multi-millionaires.
