The middle-aged dummies are forming a band called "Blanket"! It's a cover band. (4 Viewers)

RA and krista didn't grow up on "classic rock" radio (or its predecessor, AOR),

This is true. I listened to Hartford, CT, pop radio, which was really R&B and pop. Then I moved on to my own stuff from cassettes, liner notes, friends, and my brother. Then I got into Van Halen at around the age of twelve or thirteen and went through a metal/hard rock phase. Borrowed a punk cassette at fourteen (Dead Kennedys' Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death) and then got into punk. The rest is all liner notes, MTV, and other influences.

I didn't and don't really listen to classic rock, though I have an inkling of what was played from my peers and their tastes (which was the reason I eschewed it).

I have never heard the Allman Brothers song in question, though the description makes me eager to hear it.

Surprised you hadn't heard that before - the ABB version is pretty much a classic rock staple.
RA and krista didn't grow up on "classic rock" radio (or its predecessor, AOR), so maybe Mt. Man didn't either.
I was basing it on the type of music he seems to be drawn to - I would have expected the Allmans to be in his wheelhouse.
Not necessarily in my wheelhouse, but probably not far off. Allman Brothers are one of those bands where my knowledge is wading pool deep, and I don't know that there's any real reason for that other than that's what happened. I definitely have to allow for this to fall into "don't remember it" rather than "never heard it", though.

I grew up on local Top-40 and R&B radio, plus whatever came on American Top 40 on Sunday mornings. I never heard The Allman Brothers on the radio until the classic-rock format kicked off (around here, that was 1986-87 or thereabouts).
There was a great FM radio station here when I was growing up in the 70s. They played everything from rock to singer-songwriter to funk and disco. My siblings and I didn't have a TV in any of our bedrooms, but we did have stereos, so we listened to music a lot. I used to like to listen to the King Biscuit Flour Hour on Sunday nights. When I got a cassette deck I'd tape it sometimes. One time I got grounded for a week, and part of the punishment was taking away my stereo. I was eating the last bowl of Captain Crunch with Crunchberries, and my brother got mad because there wasn't enough left for him. He decided to ruin my snack by pouring his iced tea on my cereal. I picked up the bowl and threw the contents in his face. I got grounded and he did not. :<_<:

Never retaliate. They always punish the retaliatory action and not the person who started it.

I was swimming in the Caribbean
Animals were hiding behind the rocks
Except the little fish bumped into me
I swear he was trying to talk to me
koi-koi

I never knew those were the lyrics until now and I've listened to the song over a hundred times. Nice. How cute!

Same for me.

On a few of the covers I chose—— including this one, Let Down and my next song to be revealed, the lyrics are much clearer than on the original.

Blue Cheer's "Summertime Blues" psychedelic rendition is far out. ☮️❤️and 🍄
I love the old Beat Club performance of this, with Cousin Itt on drums.

YES! Beat Club was awesome. They have best versions of a lot of songs.

Even better with the German host introductions.

Nice. While it was going, I thought of having to be the security in the apt. complex in which they were living. Knocking and having to tell them to turn the noise down mid-jam. That would suck.

"Uh, guys, could you turn that down a bit. We've got people that need to work tomorrow. C'mon, this is the fourth time I've asked. It's my job on the line here . . . "

I have no idea what made me think that. Every so often when a group gets so jamming or out there that normal or natural movement ceases I think of somebody who has to be the corrective to that. So that things function and **** gets done. I can't imagine what I would have done in the sixties with all the psychedelia and acid rock going around. And all that dancing!

I was not made for '66-'74, I guess.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand. . .

Of the covers I was already very familiar with, these are my favorites.

This Dead Souls cover is almost as good as the original but no one is topping JD's original for me. I agree about this being from a great soundtrack.

Finally got to listen to the playlist - my favorite yet! Lots of known favorites that I won't mention. Of the new-to-me songs, I echo the positive thoughts on "Just Breathe" and "Dead Souls." In the "would listen to again" category, "Where Is My Mind?" and "Everything Is Broken" top my list. In the "this is what a cover should be" category, I give huge  to "Believe," "Going to California." and "Riders in the Sky."

Special shout-out to Steve Lukather for rocking in Ringo's All-Starr Band when I've seen them the last two years, and to Umphrey's McGee for the oh-so-clever mashup.

And no, I don't remember ever hearing that Allman Brothers song before, either.

This is what I'm here for:

No Woman No Cry/Let It Be mashup - Umphrey's McGee (Bob Marley/The Beatles)

I actually expected some backlash for this, either that it wasn't truly a "cover" or that it was just ridiculous. But I love what Umphrey's does with their mashups, making two songs sounds like they were genuinely written together.

I flirted with the idea of doing an entire list of mashups. Based on the lack of love this got, glad I didn't.

Seeing them Friday night, pretty excited.

I've been without internet for 18 hours. High winds, lots of rain, not unusual here. I'm a cable cutter from way back so everything is streamed. I have plenty of movies and other media downloaded to lessen the issue. Phone data is fine. No big deal. I hate it, but whatever. It's trash day and I was one of few smart enough not to put the cans out. They all got blown over and well, lovely. These outages are typically 4-6 hours, so I checked for outages and several were reported but it also seemed like my area was back up. I called Mediacom. Everything should be working. Wth.

I have an awesome cat. One eye, broken tail, rescued feral dude. He likes it indoors, and I know some of you think having an outdoor cat is wrong, but this dude will not be happy inside. Just to eat, sleep some, cuddle and play a little. Otherwise he wants out. Good thing is, he's never used litter and never had an accident. Well, a couple vomits in four years. I don't have a kitty door. I let him in and out. My way to try and keep him in more. Last summer he figured out I am usually in my office and rather than using the back door, he just started knocking on my office window. I found it hilarious, and that's how he comes in now. And seriously, he knocks. It's so cool. Well walking across my desk he stepped perfectly on the little tab that releases the cable on my router. Doh.

I'm back. Ready to listen to Umphrey's McGee.

Of the new-to-me songs, I echo the positive thoughts on "Just Breathe"

If you read my posts this would not be new to you. I'm not much of a write-up guy, but it's one I've drafted, written up with some effort and well... shouldn't be new to you. And yeah, it's pretty great. Eddie's version is so good also. If I could ever learn guitar this would be high on my list to learn and try singing it.

Any of you notice you hear one and think it's new you then later remember it isn't? I did that with Money Changes Everything. Of course I knew Cyndi's version, but I said I didn't. In fact, it's the only version I know. Wth, I hate being old.

Three songs into the 4 pointers, in the mood for putting my hi-fi to the test with some volume. The fun thing about these playlists is the disparate transitions. From Buddy Miller putting a Van Morrison vibe on Otis, to the Allman's rocking hard with a well-known one I didn't think was a cover, to RL Burnside lamenting Everything is Broken in that voice of his. Just makes me smile. There's no playlists like our playlists.

Whoa. Amy Lee. I avoided Zep doing covers, but didn't consider Zep being covered. What a nice vocal there. Instantly moved to an Amazon HD playlist and listened to again. I like Evanescence just fine, but a dive into her solo stuff is coming.

Also, I'm prolly posting so much cuz it's nice to have internet. My daughter just told she was only down about an hour.

Why don't I like Eric Clapton? Oh well, no thumper violation. I know he's amazing but he never gives me nice things to say. Maybe I love Bob Marley too much for this one? Anyway, no worries. Mony Mony just helped me invent the 62 year old one man sofa-bound mosh pit. I love that song. I love most of his hits. It's more than memories of college bars in the 80s. They're really good and have aged well for me. Also love On Broadway... there's another one of those transitions.

Coffee Break and this live stream of the playlist might continue.

OH tally:

Obviously I know who Ricky Nelson is. I have heard of Bongwater but not Freakwater. Still an 0-fer on the songs. At the beginning of this thread I set the over/under on # of OH songs I'd heard of at 7.5. Under looking good so far.

I was a little surprised at myself when I chose this song for my playlist. I've had the live version on YouTube bookmarked for a while, but when I happened to play the studio recording it hit me how much I loved this gem of a glam rock song converted into lo-fi. Subsequent efforts to identify similar genre-benders have come up empty (have not looked that hard) and I'm open to suggestions, which might result in spoilers, so ixnay on that. ... T Rex almost covers both at once.

For the visual learners in the crowd, a live performance with sexy time. I know @shuke is a fan.

Covers from #27 that I haven't mentioned before that I know and like:

That's All Right Mama - Elvis Presley (Arthur Crudup)
It's Oh So Quiet - Bjork (Betty Hutton) -- I had no idea this was a cover
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down – Joan Baez (The Band) -- I saw ...Trail of Dead do a spontaneous, unrehearsed performance of this as part of the encore. They were quite drunk.
Mystic Eyes - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (Them) -- I saw Petty and co. perform this live. They absolutely destroyed it.
Ruby Baby - Donald Fagen (The Drifters) -- At first I didn't vibe with this as much as the other tracks on The Nightfly, but I've grown to appreciate it. It's a window into what shaped Fagen as a musician.
People Are Strange - Echo & The Bunnymen (The Doors) -- The "modern rock" stations I listened to in the '90s would sometimes play this.
(They Long to Be) Close to You - The Carpenters (Richard Chamberlain) -- I figured there was a good chance this was a cover since it's a Bacharach/David composition, but I didn't know for sure. Studio 150, the all-covers Paul Weller album from which my selection of The Bottle was taken, also has a version of this song. It also has a track that will appear on my list (performed by a different artist).
I Put a Spell on You - Nina Simone (Screamin' Jay Hawkins)
She Said She Said - The Black Keys (The Beatles) -- I got this album from The Black Keys' merch table when I saw them in a Philly club long before they got big.
I Heard It Through The Grapevine – Marvin Gaye (Gladys Knight) -- Yes, I knew it was a cover, but I've never really thought of it as such, it is so unique.
See Emily Play - David Bowie (Pink Floyd) -- I first came across this when I did a Bowie song draft on another board.
Always On My Mind - Pet Shop Boys (Gwen McCrae) -- As with many people from Gen X, I heard Willie's version first.
I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow – Alison Krauss & Union Station (traditional)

I'm in meetings for the next 90 minutes so my write-up of my own song for today will have to wait.

(They Long to Be) Close to You - The Carpenters (Richard Chamberlain) -- I figured there was a good chance this was a cover since it's a Bacharach/David composition, but I didn't know for sure. Probably have mentioned before, but it's impossible not to think of Parenthood with this song.

See Emily Play - David Bowie (Pink Floyd) -- I first came across this when I did a Bowie song draft on another board.
I love this comment on the YouTube clip I watched:

I'm not sure how he did it, but Bowie somehow managed to make an already surreal Barrett-era Pink Floyd song even weirder.

Blue Bottle's current Ethiopian is seriously world class coffee. I may break my 16 oz rule.

If you put your trash out on a windy stormy night and it gets blown over and all over your neighbor's property, what do you do? I roll my can over there and pick it up. Also, discovered my front yard is the wind funnel for debris on this street.:cautious:

Ooh. Hazel Dean improving Abba? Sounded great.
haha... right into Judas Priest. I feel sorry for people who don't love music. This is fun. Need to check out the Fleetwood Mac version. But this rocks.
And a sped up Peppermint Twist by Sweet. Can't complain about that and this transition actually worked. Gave me a Nick Lowe Dave Edmunds vibe. That's a good thing.

Song: Sweetheart Like You

Artist: Craig Finn

Original Artist: Bob Dylan

Original song facts:

"Sweetheart Like You"
is a song by Bob Dylan that appeared as the second track of his 1983 album Infidels. The song was Dylan's first official music video. The video shows Dylan and his backing band on a bar stage performing after hours while being watched by a female janitor (Also played by Dylan) cleaning up the bar.

It may have my favorite lyric stanza of all time:

They say that patriotism is the last refuge
To which a scoundrel clings
Steal a little and they throw you in jail
Steal a lot and they make you a king.

Interesting facts about the cover:

Finn takes a more philosophical approach to the song adding an awkward, questioning insecure vibe from the narrator unlike Dylan’s version that brims with confidence.

Crudup wasn't even a 5th tier artist. He was a one-trick pony, and wasn't good at even that. God bless him, though.

I reckon most folks here know how Presley came to record this, so I won't bore you with the details (unless you ask). It was pretty much an accident that changed music history.

The thing about this record is how it sounds, which makes it different than anything that came before. There's no drummer on this, yet the beat is there (most credit to Bill Black's bass for that). Scotty Moore pretty much lays the template (for better or worse) for almost 70 years of guitar-based Western music. And the singer got exactly what Sam Phillips was looking for. The way this record soars will never go out of style.

I know a lot of people aren't big Presley fans, especially among this demographic. But damned near everything you like happened because a nobody, loser kid from the wrong side of the tracks got frustrated and bored in a little Memphis studio one day in 1954 and picked an obscure blues song to cover.
