5.ee - Kurt Elling - "Matte Kudasai" (King Crimson cover)
The original: The early 80s King Crimson lineup of Fripp, Bruford, Belew and Levin is my favorite of the many configurations of the group. They toned down some of the Prog extravagances with shorter punchier songs influenced by New Wave and Berlin-period Bowie. You don't usually associate King Crimson with ballads but "Matte Kudasai" is a gorgeous one from their 1981 album Discipline. The title is Japanese for "please wait".
The cover: Jazz vocalist Kurt Elling recorded "Matte Kudasai" along with other Rock and Pop covers on his 2011 album The Gate. It's an interesting choice but the song translates surprisingly well to the Jazz idiom. Elling's version sticks to the same tempo but the arrangement for a Jazz quartet is simpler than the busier King Crimson version.
Is the cover better than the original?: I love both versions but I'm going to say Elling's cover is superior. He's a better, more expressive singer than Adrian Belew who tries his best but just doesn't have pipes. I think the Jazz accompaniment works well on the cover. It leaves more space for the singer and the lyrics. King Crimson has more going on in the background with Belew's guitar birdsong and a more active and present bassline.

One of the reasons I think the Dead are the greatest American band ever is their celebration of American music through their covers. Rock, folk, country, blues, you name it. I seriously considered choosing 31 songs covered by them.
For most of their covers I chose for this, I picked songs they played so often and so well the songs practically became their own. That might be blasphemous to Cash fans, but I think this one is pretty close, with the Dead having covered it live 398 times.

Sweetheart Like You – Craig Finn (Robert Zimmerman) -- I can actually understand Finn better than Dylan.
The Infidels album (Dylan's first after his born-again phase) is seriously underrated.
Pills - The New York Dolls (Bo Diddley) -- At first I thought this was Mick Jagger, but then I realized it was his acolyte, David Johansen.
Matte Kudasai - Kurt Elling (King Crimson) -- Stunning. What a vocal. I checked out the Crimson original and loved that too.
Burning Down the House - Dave Matthews Band (Talking Heads) -- Could easily have been made twee, but ends up grittier than what we often get from DMB.
Black Sabbath Medley – Candlemass (Black Sabbath) -- This was fun, and I pumped my fist when the Supernaut riff showed up.
The Way You Wear Your Head - Charly Bliss (Nada Surf) -- Lovely.
Caravan - Brian Setzer Orchestra (Duke Ellington) -- Surf rock crossed with big-band jazz?
I have seen Phish perform this. They played lots of jazz covers when they were a bar/club band, but mostly stopped when they moved to arenas. However, they broke this out at the old Spectrum in Philly on their New Year's Run in 1996.
Bennie & The Jets – Hickoids (Elton John) -- Another good example of an artist imposing their own style on a cover while keeping the best aspects of the original.
Come On Eileen - Save Ferris (Dexy's Midnight Runners) -- This too.
Baker Street - Foo Fighters (Gerry Rafferty) -- A yacht rocker turned into a bona fide alt rocker. And this was done in 1997 so it wasn't shtick.
From the Beginning - Dokken (ELP) -- Really well executed. Wasn't expecting to hear electric guitar instead of synthesizer at the end.

I've been putting together lists for Hawks in advance of his upcoming trip, and I realized that if I'd done a SUPER-AWESOME-MEGA-CONTEST!!!111, a good question might have been whether Johnny Cash would show up more often as coverer or coveree. Maybe it won't be close at the end, but through the 10-to-11-pointers, it seems like a close call.

I think the bolded is their biggest contribution to music. They served as a gateway (grateway?) to a ton of legacy artists that their fans otherwise probably would have ignored. They also kind of set the template for Free Form Radio in the late 60s, as those channels would often slip in a Leadbelly or Merle Travis record between the Doors & Hendrix.

Yeah clicking on individual links for each song (and having to wait for commercials) is not an ideal way to listen to music for me. I get not everything is on Spotify, and that's unfortunate, but the playlist is what works for me.Clearly, if your selection isn't on the Spotify playlist it's going to be overlooked.

- I still dig the cover of "Bennie and the Jets" by Hickoids. I think their sleaze rock kicks the song up a notch vs Elton's original.
- This folk countryish cover of "My One Desire" by Freakwater is great. I like it better than Ricky's version, and his is good. I like Freakwater's simple guitar to the lyrics of the song.
- NC home girl Nina Simone does an awesome cover of "I Put A Spell on You." I love her version.
- "So. Central Rain" is one of my favorite R.E.M. songs. This slow tempo cover by Grant-Lee Phillips is like REM on ludes, and I think it's great.
- The "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" cover by Alison Krauss and Union Station is my cup of tea. It gets me excited for Merlefest this April.
- The "Big Country" cover by GD has the hippie dippers/spinners activated.
- "The Way You Wear Your Head" cover by Charly Bliss is fun and has the energy of Nada Surf's version.
- I like the arrangement on Bowies cover of "See Emily Play." His cover is a bit heavier I think than the original, but it doesn't lose the feel of the song.
- "She said, She said" by The Black Keys is a cool fuzzy wuzzy version.
