I have to be honest. The original title of this post was "Is there ANY head coach who is more miserable than Nick Saban?" But I wanted to be fair and put it to a vote instead of just singling Saban out. It just seems that every time you see Saban in a presser, he treats the reporters as if they just murdered his family or something.

I get the "I'm a hard-nosed, no-nonsense disciplinarian" shtick, I really do... but it's okay to tone it down a bit in the middle of May. The guy comes off as a big jerkoff. What could be so rotten about his life? He's a respected college and NFL coach, he makes silly cash, he has a hot wife and he lives in Miami. My heart bleeds for him....

I don't remember him being anywhere near this cranky when he was at LSU.

Maybe it runs in the family. For the younger guys, his dad, Lou Saban, was a pretty fair coach himself. But he was also a nasty sort, especially if you caught him after a tough loss.

:scared:

try to get a straight answer from Denny Green, when he deceides to talk to the media.

I have seen Denny his whole Pro coaching career and he nevers says anything of substance. Heck sometimes at the end of games he just leaves the locker room and goes home. He had no coaches show on TV or radio station in the twin cities, atleast not a radio station anyone heard of.

Worst of all, its always somebody or something else that cause is team to play crappy! Always excuses, not his fault. that said, i am happy as helll he is coaching this offense in AZ. HE KNOWS HOW TO PUT POINTS ON THE BOARD.

Coughlin for me. He's been described as Parcells without the wit.
Parcells answers intelligent questions well and very thoughtfully. He has no time for the mediots you ask questions with purpose of :stirspot: .

Bill Bellicheck down?

I heard and interview with some beat reporter from Boston that said that he was out in Napa Valley on vacation in the offseason. Low and behold so was Bill and his wife. Bill has never acknowledged knowing the writer's name in all the years of covering him. Just treated the reporter as a non-entity that asks dumb questions that aren't worth Bill's time.

Bill sees him, crosses the room, extends his hand with a warm smile and shakes the hand of the reporter and calls him by the first name. The reporter went on to say that they had dinner with the Bellichecks a couple of times while they were out there. Bill even sent a case of wine to the reporters home. Then, back on the job in Boston and Bill doesn't know the guy's name anymore. Totally ignores him again.

That's a guy that goes out of his way to be surly to the media....

Those "________ down" quips never get old. I left him out intentionally because there is no way he should win.

The poll asks who is the most MISERABLE head coach, yes?

Belichick is not miserable. He simply goes out of his way to provide no information whatsoever to the media. But he is fairly pleasant while doing so. I live in Rhode Island. Even though I'm not a Pats fan, I can't swing a dead cat without hearing a Belichick sound bite. He's stoic, to be sure. Miserable? Not a chance.

So was it Borges, or Cafardo? Both those guys have vendettas against Belichick and try to damage his character (and even his talent as a head coach and personnel evaluator, if you can believe that) every chance they get.

:goodposting: Belichick has gone out of his way to be courteous to the media. He just likes to limit the information he gives them, because he doesn't want to give the opposition any information. A couple times last season, he went so far as to take the media into the film room and he actually explained some of the more technical aspects of football to them.

Dead on. He learned his lesson the hard way while in Cleveland. Obviously if he didn't have to talk to the media it wouldn't bother him one bit. Yet, he understands the role they play and makes sure they will cause as little distractions as possible. In a town like Boston that is beyond important since the media can really cause a firestorm with teams and is often looking to do so. Therefore while BB will never give specific info that he doesn't want known he makes a big effort to make sure the relationship between the Pats and the media stays on the upside thus eliminating as many distractions as possible.

When he's talking general football he is absolutely fascinating. If it involves his team he definetly keeps the info very tight. Yet, if it's a general topic or something to do with the history of the game I could listen to him for hours.

One of the more underrated aspects of being a coach, manager or GM is dealing with the media. In rabid media markets like Boston, New York and Philly it takes on an added importance. With today's 24/7 media coverage there is an incredible potential for distractions. If anyone thinks athletes don't read the papers or know what's being said on talk radio they are sadly mistaken. Therefore it's imperative that the powers that be avoid adverserial relationships with the general media and do as much as possible to make the players aware that there will be consquences for idiotic statements or actions with the media. At the end of the day the less distractions a team and it's players are dealing with the more focused they will be on their performance. You can argue whether this right or wrong all day but it's a moot point. The media is here to stay and the fans want that info. Therefore one other aspect to be a topnotch organization in the modern sports landscape is keeping that team/media relationship as positive as possible.

Hi RN,I really don't see that. Saban is easily one of the funnier guys coaching. He gets aggravated by dumb questions but overall, he seems like a likable guy. He's always on TV.

My favorite quote from him last year was when pressed about a defensive call where the other team scored on a busted coverage and he was asked if that was a breakdown he deadpanned, "Yeah. We don't have any defenses where we let the guy run down the middle of the field uncovered." :lmao: I love that guy.

I'm not sure who it was. It may not have been a beat writer. It could've been a television personality, I don't know. But he seemed pretty upbeat about the whole thing and really laughed it off, so it may not have been either of those guys....

IMO there is no greater moment in the history of coaches and the media than the Jim Mora "playoffs" interview. Absolutely priceless. I never get tired of that one.

Actually RN, Saban had a reputation for being a complete ### to work with...IIRC, he lost several asst coaches at LSU because they couldn't stand working with him.

The best coach rant EVER, bar none, was Cubs manager Lee Elia's tirade in 1983 to reporters in his office after a tough loss. There is no way I would get clearance to link you to it, as it contains F Bomb after F Bomb. But if Joe wants to give me permission...

I'd be pretty miserable too if I had gone out of my way lobbying for a guy that quit on my team once before and had drug problems, only to have it blow up in my face a year later. If the Dolphins don't win the East this season, he should be fired for that situation alone.

I voted Billick. I agree that Saban and Parcells are probably harder to get answers from, and as a fantasy owner I am not a big fan of their avoiding questions. But I respect the way those two run their teams, perhaps news people, fans and fantasy owners don't necessarily need every nugget of truth. I think that if I were a coach I would hold my cards close to my vest and do the best to protect my players and coaches.

Billick does come across as a gigantic Richard.

Then he follows it up by signing little Vick.Still, the guy can coach. You could see a different Miami team down the stretch last year. I don't have a dog in the fight as far as the AFC East goes, but I bet Miami takes it.
