The NEA is promoting resources that teach kids about rimming and fisting. (1 Viewer)

@djmich - I will try to answer your question now and maybe put some clearer words to my thoughts.

I think we had a big change during covid, and what I witnessed was:

1. More and more parents involved with what was going on with school and being taught in the classroom. Overall a good thing, but it seems like we are now seeing waaaay more of this type of outrage as well.

2. it became painfully obvious how much kids depending on school for non-school things. For whatever the reason at home might be, kids depend a lot on the public schools for food, role models, guidance, counseling. etc.

Now, my position on this is that #2 is way more of an issue and way more common. When we were talking about hiring guards at schools I was posting stats about how many millions of kids go to school without a counselor, psychologist, or nurse. That is bonkers. On top of this, the school had to weigh the fact that many times the abuse and non-acceptance with certain groups of kids comes from the home. IMO it is part of the resposibilty of the school to provide these things and services. Maybe that is a point that we disagree on, not sure.

Where I am going with this is in theory I have 0 issues with all teachers being trained about things like this - sex, sexuality, abuse, whatever. ESPECIALLY since so many schools don't have people trained in those areas for kids. I am glad they are training teachers how to address these issues or refer them where they need to go. I don't think "I can't talk to you, ask your parent" is always the way to go - like I said, many times that's the issue. This isn't grooming, this isn't teachers wanting to indoctrinate kids and turn them bi. I am willing to give the schools and teachers more benefit of the doubt than that. This is why even my position about the teachers learning this stuff is even on the fence. My reaction is that yes, the fisting part might be a little much, but on the surface I have 0 issues with a math teacher being a part of this training, or buttons being worn so kids know they have a place to turn to.
The 40 year shift in the distribution of wealth in this nation has led to a situation where the standard for the average family is that both parents have to work to exist. As such, we are increasingly dependent on schools to perform functions that a stay at home parent might have in the past.

Can you expand on this...what functions are you talking about?
I was addressing this: "2. it became painfully obvious how much kids depending on school for non-school things. For whatever the reason at home might be, kids depend a lot on the public schools for food, role models, guidance, counseling. etc."

Parents are less available to children as we're working more, and more of us are working.

Still really not understanding this...I understand something like food if the kid comes from an unfortunate situation or afterschool programs obviously but if you don't have time to raise your kids and teach them about life and are relying on others to do it than you are doing a bad job as a parent.
I'm talking about the average American, not me. I was fortunate enough to make enough to allow my wife to stay home for several years while my kids were young.

I am saying that more parental time is devoted to work than it was 40 years ago, and that has impacts. How could it not?

I agree with that 100% and there are far more strains on time and money than there used to be, but you still raise your kids and don't have others do it.

Americans need to get on the Euro plan which involves shorter work weeks and more vacation time.

I think this is great perspective. I think the materials that started the discussion are not at all designed in a way that would be conducive to the objective you're outlining...but I am ok with the objective and sane material supporting it.

The point I was trying to make was that along with food, etc.. the schools are providing counseling services and things of that nature. Combine that with a lack of resources in those key areas, and personally I don't have an issue with teachers being trained in these areas for situations that might come up. Then add in that a lot of times people of these communities don't feel comfortable approaching parents about this stuff because that is where the abuse and lack of acceptance is coming from.

I would love that all families are loving, open, and unabusive so that schools wouldn't have to do any of this, but we all know that's not the reality.
I would love that all schools have trained counselors and psychologists to help the kids where my first statement isn't the case, but we also know this isn't reality either.

I agree with the basic premise here. I’m not sure that a prospective teacher should learn to teach sex subjects to kids unless it’s a health class. Now to think that there are not teachers that take this to another level, LoTT has a site dedicated to these cretins. How many of teachers are like those on LoTT? One percent would be too many.

At the end of the day, the best education starts at home. It’s tough with so many broken homes now, which is why your second point is spot on.

So, it appears there will be no limits as to what teachers can discuss with kids...or at least it appears there are some people who are good with this...(in an Alan Iverson voice)..."I mean, listen, we talking about fisting."

There have been no examples given here of teachers discussing this with kids. None.

What is LoTT?

Also - the best education CAN start at home. I have a hunch it often does not.

I looked into this a bit deeper and learned the NEA LGBTQ Caucus is an entirely different organization than the NEA. Here is their website.

In order to get to the page that links to the organization that has a link to "fisting" you need to purchase a membership in order to receive a badge. Here is the page without the badge.

Again, this isn't in curriculum. There are multiple degrees of separation between the NEA and this website. 99% of teachers are not members of this caucus and likely have no idea they even exist. Even if they do know of their existence there will be even fewer who are members.

This whole thing is about generating maximum outrage and based on the responses in here it's working. Your student isn't going to learn about fisting or rimming in the classroom. They'll learn about it on Pornhub when you're not paying attention.
Shocking that Chris Rufo would post something misleading to generate outrage among conservatives. It isn't like he has a history of this garbage or anything.
I see you beat me to it. It's his m.o., and he doesn't hide it, and still people are falling for it.
People want to fall for it, because they want to justify their hostility towards the other “side”. There’s a reason 90+% of these sensational headlines originate from a handful of posters.

All of a sudden Drag Queen story hour is leading to many things people predicted. So I'd say it still sounds pretty sick and sleazy.
Yea, drag queen story hour has spread like wildfire across the country. Can barely even enter a library without tripping over a drag queen. Soon AP fisting and AP rimming will be college acceptance requirements...

Maybe spend less time making up things to be outraged over and more time being outraged over the thousands of kids that were abused, and likely still are being abused, by those bastions of liberal thought the catholic church and boy scouts.

You predicted DQSH would lead to teachers wearing badges with QR codes linked to materials that included fisting?? Damn, you are good!
Conservatives always seem to need some boogeyman to fear and rally around. Immigrants and now LGBT folks are the current focus. With a sprinkling of liberals thrown in to.

Exactly. It’s why you can’t even have a rational conversation with a 24-hour media enthusiast. They don’t deal in earnest debate. They don’t even know what it is anymore. People are are perfectly reasonable become radicalized and pretty soon a guy you knew for 20 years is a completely different guy.

Anytime you see someone using words like liberals and democrats when describing pushing stupid stuff you know they've been radicalized.

In my short time here, the liberal posters haven't once equated anything bad to all republicans. Just acknowledging that many feel blind obedience to Trump for some reason. Haven't seen a single racist targeted against conservatives as a group, but conservatives here sure seem to like to lump all liberals together. One dude even said the LGBT lobby controlled the democratic party. WAT?

It's all they have. They have no healthcare plan, no jobs plan except cutting uber rich folk's taxes, they have no moral high ground anymore at all after Trump, they don't have patriotism anymore either because they still support American traitor Donald Trump. They don't make arguments over policy at all anymore. They back our blue but hate any cops who investigate them. They just got nothing.

Pretty typical for an in-group / out-group propaganda enthusiast. It’s basically saying “At least I’m not an (insert out group name here).”

WAT?
Or the overuse of "they" and "you guys".

Agreed...it would be much easier if they came up with a term like Maga or Ultra-Maga or some type of "phobe"...much better way to get your message across.

All the sudden Drag Queen Story hour doesn’t sound too bad, huh.
All of a sudden Drag Queen story hour is leading to many things people predicted. So I'd say it still sounds pretty sick and sleazy.
That thing isn't happening!

Just. So. Rich.

Has drag queen story hour come to a library near you?

I will also add that the site that has people outraged is providing sexual education and health resources to......... Canadians
I have to admit I am confused about this. I clicked the original link, read the article, and clicked the link to the website in question which brought me to an archived web page with a bunch of links to other websites, one of which was the fisting instructions. And the archive website seemed to reference Canada. So then I went to the actual NEA LGBTQ website and none of the questionable material was there. Then I realized I spent way too much time down that rabbit hole and gave up.

In any case I think it's pretty fair to say that that article does not provide any evidence that the actual NEA is trying to get fisting added to sex ed syllabi for US high schoolers.

Not specifically me and not specifically QR codes, no. So you're cool with all this?

Some interesting defenses/deflections in here. While "Yes that's wrong but it's not part of the official curriculum." is being trotted again from the CRT nonsense, "That's wrong but it's a Canadian site" is at least a new one.

To answer that, you have to tell me what "all this" is. I think I was pretty clear in my thoughts yesterday to dj and others, but I can clarify farther if you need me to.

Sorry, if someone is claiming that it's being "taught" to kids, it's in the schools, it's common, etc. I personally require more than suggested reading IF someone comes to you with questions or concerns.

Most of the time I am with you guys about the specific example going overboard, but it's always taken way to far into the "groomers" and teachers want to turn the kids bi nonsense. Very to take anyone seriously when they are going there.

Look, if this material was taught, or provided as an additional resource somehow, or even available via a link or QR code in some material shared with school kids, it shouldn't have been.

I have zero problem with it, but most of society does. It had no business intersecting with school kids in any way shape or form. Please stop arguing that it was only sorta tangentially shared with the kids. That is a binary point, it either was or wasn't. If it was, it shouldn't have been. If it wasn't at all, then you can climb on your soapbox about over-reactions. But if it was, the reactions by people taking issue with it are fair IMO.

I agree with the bolded which is why I personally went down the rabbit hole trying to figure out what the heck was going on.

But when you start a thread called "The NEA is promoting resources that teach kids about rimming and fisting." linking to a tweet that says "The NEA is the largest teachers union in the country, representing more than 3 million public school teachers in all 14,000 local school districts. And they're actively promoting resources for "putting a fist or whole hand into a person's vagina or bum." Disgraceful." and then none of that appears to actually be true you lose me pretty quickly. Much like I close articles where the headline is deceptive and not supported by the article.

If there is a pertinent topic to discuss or an argument to be made it shouldn't have to be twisted to mislead away from actual facts. And when it is all twisted up your credibility becomes toast with me and I ignore it.

None of it appears to be true???

Name one thing that isn't true. Are you really going to try and claim that putting that QR code on the badge does not amount to promotion? Really?

Well we can start from the part about "the NEA" which is the National Education Association ("representing more than 3 million school teachers") being responsible for this when it was actually something called the NEA-LGBTQ Caucus where from everything I can tell is a small group of teachers/people (< 100) independent from the actual NEA that is selling badges on the internet to anyone with $2 that may contain a QR code that links to a sex ed resource site (from Canada, I think) that then has a link to pretty explicit material. I may order one myself out of sheer curiosity whether or not the QR code really does go to the site that original article/tweet said it did.

But see, when I read the headline that the NEA is advocating for promoting explicit sexual content at schools it makes me sort of jump and then I find out that's not actually what is happening and it was just sensationalism and misdirection it really turns me off, personally, and I tend to discredit the whole thing as something to be concerned about.

The more apt story here probably should have been that it appears that there was an actual teacher that brought one of these to school in Ohio and the parents are up in arms and a discussion could be had without pinning this incident on the entirety of the NEA. Which I'm sure was the point - LOOK AT WHAT THOSE CRAZY TEACHER LIBS GOD HATING COMMIES ARE DOING TO OUR CHILDREN NOW!!!

This is a way bigger deal than for profit healthcare ruining the lives of thousands every single day.
Soon to be lots of anal fissures adding to the costs. You should start a thread big guy.
What planet do you live on where you think a joke like that is in any way acceptable? Shows your character.
Normalizing fisting will absolutely lead to more anal fissures. It is pretty much an unavoidable consequence of such a messed up behavior. This will add to costs.

Nothing wrong with adding a little humor and pointing out how hypocritical you were being since I notice you haven't started any threads about your very passionate feelings regarding said topic.

The NEA doesn't really promote anything "at schools". That's a projection on your part. They promote to educators.

"About Us

The National Education Association Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+ Caucus"

Is surely endorsed by the NEA, if not heavy involved. I mean come on. They have been around since the 80's and they use the name NEA. No way that the leadership of the NEA wouldn't have shut down that usage.

This is a good point. What people don't seem to wrap their heads around is that most in here will agree on those specific examples and agree that it should be addressed.

Where it always goes of the rails is the "therefore..." part of the program which is the spectacle of it all. Ie - therefore it's being "taught" in our schools, therefore teachers are groomers, etc.. That and like you said, it usually starts off with a sensationalized link like the OP which people have to weed through and re-read to figure out all the details.
