The Next Emmit Smith (1 Viewer)

Emmitt was an elite RB. No doubt about it. To claim otherwise is foolish.
Emmitt had 5 really good years, the SB seasons, when he had the dominant OL, Moose Johnson, etc. around him.Otherwise he was a good RB, he had 8 seasons over 4.0 YPC, which to me is baseline YPC. If you're less than that, you're not playing very well. Emmitt was a complete back, great blocker, good runner, decent receiving option. Nothing about him was elite though. Yet, in some ways, the whole ended up better than it's parts.I'd take a healthy Portis, LT, Edge of modern day backs easily over Emmitt - they just don't have the longevity yet. But I don't place Emmitt in my top-10 of all time backs, I do put Barry there.

Of the current backs, Edge reminds me most of Emmit. He never really wows you. He doesn't blow you away with speed or leave tacklers grabbing at air. But at the end of the game, he has 120 yards and you wonder how.

Edge was always a better all-around back than he was a pure runner, and I think the same could be said for Emmit.

basically, he did everything you'd want from a back and did it well, but you wouldn't consider him elite? The whole was better than the parts, but that's part of what made him great.

There's no way I take Portis over Emmit. What has he done to warrant that claim? Keep in mind, he's played behind some great lines as well. LT and Edge, yes - those two are among the best ever IMO.

Back to the topic of the thread, I was completely off base with what I thought the OP was asking when I mentioned CJ3. Records could be set, but he's not Emmit. Hell, LenDale White could be considered closer to Emmit I suppose.

To be serious for a second, my top 5 "Emmit-like" RBs:

Portis

Lynch

Forte

Edge

Michael Turner
