Steelers wheeling, dealing with eye on veteran running back

Sunday, April 30, 2006

By Ed Bouchette and Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers are considering making a trade for a veteran running back today and speculation is centered on big Atlanta back, T.J. Duckett.

Duckett (6-0, 254) has fallen out of favor under a new regime in Atlanta and the Falcons yesterday drafted his replacement, Jerious Norwood, a running back from Mississippi State on the third round.

The Steelers have only a pick in the fifth, sixth and seventh round available to trade but the Falcons want to get rid of Duckett and might take a fifth-rounder in return.

"I would take him in a minute, he's a load,'' said Ron Hill, the Falcons former director of player personnel when they drafted Duckett. "He's a great kid, too."

Duckett was drafted in the first round in 2002 from Michigan State. He rushed for 380 yards with a 3.1-yard average last season but scored eight touchdowns. His best season was 2003 when he rushed for 779 yards and 11 touchdowns. He's never had 200 carries in a NFL season.

Agreed. This would go down as one of the dumbest trades EVER... (for the Falcons)

Not really. He's big, fat and out of condition. He only has a year left on his contract. He's not going to be re-signed. They just drafted another back who could carry the load. Why not get what you can for Duckett?

So, he's already been hanging with Bettis you say?
Bettis is a potential Hall of Famer. Duckett is a borderline bust.
I don't think anyone thinks Duckett is the next Bettis in terms of career numbers. If he goes to Pitt, he has the potential to do what Bettis did his last 4 years (700 yasrds, 10 TDs /yr)Seems unlikely it'll happen this year unless they give up a pick in next year's draft. But Duckett's contract will be up at the end of the season and Pitt will seem like the best suiter for him.

Norwood is like Dunn, not a big back like Duckett. He's staying in Atlanta as long as they can keep him.

that would be next year...then he's gone

I just heard on NFL radio, on Sirius Radio, that Pitt was looking to trade for Duckett. First I have heard of this. I think it would be a good for move for Pitt.

Steelers trade talks with Atlanta fizzle as 2006 draft wraps up

Six players selected in today's final rounds

Sunday, April 30, 2006

By Ed Bouchette and Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers were exploring a trade for Atlanta running back T. J. Duckett today against the backdrop of their selections in day two of the NFL Draft but no deal was hatched with the Falcons.

Behind the draft board scenes, trade talks broke off with the Falcons because Atlanta officials wanted the Steelers' third round draft pick next year for Duckett. The Steelers offered the Falcons their fifth round pick today and weren't interested in pursuing the discussions beyond that point.

Duckett (6-0, 254) has fallen out of favor under a new regime in Atlanta and the Falcons yesterday drafted his replacement, Jerious Norwood, a running back from Mississippi State on the third round.

Going into today's rounds the Steelers had a limited selection spots available to trade but if the Falcons had wanted to get rid of Duckett a deal might have been reached.

You've obviously never seen Duckett play.Tell me which part of is 39 carries for 41 yards to end 2005 impressed you. He's a HORRIBLE short yardage runner. When you have Dunn, and you're GIVING away your 250lb RB, that should clue to you into Duckett as a RB.

I'd gladly take a 7th NEXT year for him. He's probably going to get cut.
