The NFL Hall of Very Good (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
It's a place where fans of these players can cheer and applaud their careers without making a farce out of Canton by including them in the real Hall of Fame. This is for those who either...

1. Won't get in

2. Shouldn't get in

3. Should never have gotten in, in the first place

...but who were, nonetheless, a group of exceptionally productive players during their time.

We have three tiers:

*** - Penthouse suite. Just one step away from the real HOF

** - Main level. Not really an arguable Canton guy, but solidly place here

* - Basement. Fortunate to be enshrined, but he belongs, nonetheless

The first inductees for the NFL HOVG will be:

All accepted, except Fred Taylor (for now). I'm putting him up to a discussion panel. Is he even worthy of the HOVG?
I guess you missed a lot of his career . . .

That isn't sexy but it's certainbly not chopped liver. He should easily crack the Top 20 in all time rushing yards this year (I know, not saying a whole lot). His yearly fantasy rankings have been 4, 28, 6, 103, 11, 8, 20, 33, 18.

Taylor's a no brainer for the HOVG. He was one of the top five best RBs in the league for a good number of years, when healthy. Career YPC of 4.6 is sparkling; it's 5th all time (min: 2000 carries) behind OJ, Barry, Brown and Tiki. LT, Dickerson, Payton, Dorsett, Faulk and Campbell round out the top 11. Pretty incredible company.

If I had the time, I could do this all day.

Eddie George

Herschel Walker

James Brooks (5 top 10 seasons)

Harold Jackson

Dave Krieg

Steve McNair

Is Ottis Anderson even worthy of the HOVG?
6 years as a Top 10 fantasy RB makes him iffy? 5 times Top 6 in yards from scrimmage?
That second part sells me more. Again, I don't know all the stats off the top of my head, so I gotta' hear a good argument in support. These guys have to earn their way in. This should still be a tough place to find a home.

But, I'm sold.

Ottis Anderson Accepted.

Where will the HOVG be located, cobalt?
Good question. Something like Bristol, CT. You know, some random US place that barely qualifies as a city or town.Nominations? It won't be built until later this summer. We've got time for a good search committee to come to a consensus.

I was thinking Cooperstown, where all other quality athletes that aren't good enough to be in the NFL HOF go.

H. Carmichael

C. Branch

H. Ellard

L Hayes...Should be in the HOF. He had one of the best...if not best...seasons ever by a CB in 1980 with 13 INT. 4 more INT were called back due to penalties. He was Defensive Player of the Year in 1980. The Judge deserves it.

T. Nobis...Should be in the HOF.

 I know. I can't believe this hasn't been done before.I love this list except James Brooks. Five top-10 seasons, huh? Not enough sex appeal for this illustrious list. Only 3 1000-yard seasons in a 13-year career. AcceptedAcceptedRejectedAcceptedAcceptedAcceptedDave Krieg had such a quietly "Very Good" career.

I would think guys like Terrell Davis and Priest Holmes, players who were great before seeing their careers cut short due to injury, would not really apply here, since the title would seem to imply that this is for players who were usually very good, but never really great.

I like this approach because there's no wasted time in sending out ballots and taking years and years of voting to tabulate.

Chuck Foreman

Larry Brown

Mark Clayton

Art Powell (should be in the real HOF)

Gary Clark

John Brodie

Was wondering how long it would take for TD to get mention. If he had just ONE more healthy year, I'd reject this on the basis that he's HOF worthy. But, he just wasn't productive for long enough. Both accepted nominations.

Jerome Brown (DT) - greatness cut short by tragedy

John Taylor (WR) - solid numbers while in Rice's shadow, game winning catch in SB XXIII

Keith Jackson (TE) - best TE from 88 to around 93 (until S Sharpe took over the mantle)
