The NFL's 2009 Free Agency Class: The Top 10 Overall (1 Viewer)

JGalligan

Footballguy
With the NFL season now officially three quarters of the way through, many different things are going through the NFL fans mind: favorite team hopefully making the playoffs, fantasy football championship game coming up, that Lexus that you rear ended at the supermarket the other day – you know -- the usual stuff!

Anyway, what was recently running through my head though was the upcoming NFL Free Agency period. Usually thoughts like this will sprint by my conscience and never be thought of again for months on end, but I ended up latching onto this particular one like a New York City Mayor on an inconsequential and publicity boosting athletes handgun mix up!

I was originally going to do a Top 10 offensive free agents list AND a Top 10 defensive free agents list, but then I realized I don’t have to do that because we still have football to watch and it’s not the offseason anymore. So I’m just merging the two together to form one massive and highly likely to be controversial offensive and defensive free agent list. And a top 10 no less!

Just calm down though, calm down. Here we go.

I’m not going to try and prognosticate as to where these players will end up, there’ll be plenty of room for that in the replies. Instead I’ll just note what I think they’ll be offering the market and the potential teams that will be interested in singing them.

As always, please enjoy and feel free to print out as a lovely little stocking stuffer! And cheap too!

Honorable mention(s): Jonathan Vilma, Ray Lewis, Matt Cassel, Kurt Warner, Derrick Ward, OJ Otogwe, Dawan Landry

10. Dunta Robinson (DB)

2008 stats thus far: 25 total tackles (23 solo) with one interception in seven games played.

Dunta Robinson’s career has been bogged down by a lack of supporting talent on defense and an inconsistent offense until a year or so ago. He’s had some injury problems this year but remains an enticing option for any team who would be able to fit him into a quality system and surrounded by quality players.

9. Darren Sproles (RB)

2008 stats thus far: 36 attempts for 182 yards (5.1 ypa), 12 receptions for 234 yards with one TD in 12 games played.

Darren Sproles is perhaps best known, at least this year, for his rocket of a 40+ yard reception scamper for a touchdown. It was at this moment that many people were claiming that he was the heir to LaDainian Tomlinson’s crown. However, the predictions and declarations didn’t quite prove to be entirely fruitful – but he’s still one heck of a dual threat halfback.

8. Bobby Engram – WR

2008 stats thus far: 28 receptions for 301 yards in nine games played.

Many had high hopes for Engram heading into this season, that is, until the Seahawks were hit with the wide receiver strain of the bubonic plague. In somewhat limited action this season Engram has showed he can still produce, but with the rest of the team in shambles, you couldn’t really have expected him to perform any better. Engram is a solid, veteran, receiver and will likely be a hot commodity come free agency time.

7. Brian Dawkins – DB

2008 stats thus far: 57 total tackles (48 solo) with four forced fumbles, one interception and two sacks in 12 games played.

While certainly not getting any younger, Brian Dawkins has shown time and time again that he still has what it takes to play defensive back in the NFL. A decline in his production is to be expected eventually, but he could very well have another couple of years of incredibly effective and play disrupting left in him.

6A. Jeff Garcia – QB

2008 stats thus far: A 67.2% completion percentage with 1,902 passing yards for 8 TD’s and three INT’s in nine games played.

Just when you count Jeff Garcia out of it he goes and has another stellar year with minimal mistakes to boot! While it was puzzling that it took Jon Gruden so long earlier this season to insert Garcia as the starting QB permanently, the puzzling and baffling tale of Jeff Garcia will probably be given yet another chapter to add to the story. Watch him get passed up by a few teams who think he’s done and then proceed to lead whatever team he signs with to an improbable playoff run!

6B. Terrell Suggs - OLB

Added by popular demand. I am nothing if not an author of the people!

5. Julius Peppers – DE

2008 stats thus far: 41 total tackles (34 solo) with five forced fumbles and 11 sacks in 12 games played.

While rumors of an impending retirement are background noise, Peppers is just too raw and skilled of a football player to not get offered something that will succeed in changing his mind. In the right system and surrounded by the right players, Peppers could easily stretch out his career for a long, long time and continue to wreak havoc with his one-of-a-kind football build.

4. Nnamdi Asomugha – DB

2008 stats thus far: 30 total tackles (25 solo) with one forced fumble and one interception in 12 games played.

While Asomugha’s play has tailed off with the recent decline of the Raider franchise, a lot of people are forgetting the absolutely stellar season he had in 2006, complete with EIGHT interceptions – one of which was returned for a touchdown. To be fair though, this 'decline' in play is likely because teams just want nothing to do with him and thus the ball is being thrown away from him all game long. His skill and drive is there, but he just needs the right unit to really put it to use.

3. T.J. Houshmandzadeh – WR

2008 stats thus far: 81 receptions for 810 yards and four touchdowns in 12 games played.

Easily the most likely candidate to garner the most attention at the WR position, the opinions on whether or not the Bengals will resign him are as different as the stars. On one hand you have the people who say he’s too supreme of a talent to let go – especially when he’s morphed into the teams #1 receiver over the past few years. On the other hand, you have the people who argue that the Bengals took two wide receivers early in the 2008 Draft. And well, most teams don’t do that unless they’re planning for the future. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

2. Albert Haynesworth - DT

2008 stats thus far: 44 total tackles (36 solo) with three forced fumbles and 8.5 sacks in 12 games played.

I pondered long and hard about whether or not to feature Albert Haynesworth in the number one spot of this list… but I just couldn’t do it. You can read more on that below. Haynesworth on the other hand has a come a long, LONG way since the day he decided to purposefully stomp on another player’s hand. Many apologies and an optimistic attitude later and Albert Haynesworth is arguably one of the top three defensive tackles in the NFL at this exact moment in time. You would think that the Titans would want to resign him to keep their fearsome defensive line together, but you never know. Regardless, Haynesworth will be a hot topic!

1. Brandon Jacobs - RB

2008 stats thus far: 185 attempts for 950 yards (5.1 ypa) and 12 TD’s.

While I would normally take the dominating, at the peak of his career defensive end here had it been any other running back, Brandon Jacobs is NOT any other running back. You can make as many comparisons as you’d like, but Brandon Jacobs runs to run through people and he doesn’t stop moving until he is forced to rest on the ground. His style, well, his style is that of Brandon Jacobs. Plain and simple! Instead of worrying about which former player to tag an association onto him with, why not just say he runs like Brandon Jacobs? He is a machine; he produces highlight reels of his running OVER safeties and cornerbacks on nearly a weekly basis! Even if the Giants offer him a lucrative deal that would make a ton of sense for both parties, expect a LOT of different teams to be throwing all sorts of money at Jacobs this off-season. And with good reason – he’s one of a kind!

That about does it for the Top 10! As always (again), feel free to disagree vehemently and call for my head in your replies!

Not that I see it happening for either team but I would love to see him in Philly to work with westy and how much would the steelers love to have a second coming of bettis.

I think you left out two guys that are arguably more dominant than 8 or so guys on you list: Terrell Suggs from Baltimore & A. Boldin from Arizona.

I thought Boldin re-signed?

As for Suggs.. ehh, I think he's hit his peak and won't succeed nearly as well in another system other than Baltimore. I'm gonna go check on Boldin really quick -- I could have sworn he re-signed.. I'll add Suggs to the honorable mentions though.

Has Asomugha's play tailed off? I admittedly don't watch much of the Raiders, but I see threads here every week with people worried about their WR production against the Raiders because of him. I would take that as him being a dominant top 3 CB in the league.

Oh he's definitely still playing on point -- but it's not nearly at the same level that he and the entire Raiders defense for that matter was playing like in 2006.

Solid discussion topic JG. But my man, Suggs belongs higher on this list. He's a way more attractive FA than Engram, Dawkins, and Garcia (all of whom are older than me - which isn't a good thing).

I think Suggs will re-sign with Baltimore. Whether Lewis or Scott stay with the team remains to be seen, but I can't see Suggs leaving town; the Ravens front office will find a way to keep him.

Heh, thanks and it's okay. Constructive criticism is what makes this forum great! I'll add him in as an a.) or b.) since I'm beginning to see the error of my ways.

I could be wrong on Boldin, he very well may have re-signed.Suggs has been a beast this year with Ngata. He's actually been healthy all year. Suggs has been putting pressure on the QB all season, breaking up screens, and slides along the line shutting down the run with the best of them. He is as good of a run-stopper as a pass rusher and is dominant. I think Baltimore resigns him though.(sorry slow typer here) Good discussion, good thread.

I added Suggs as 6B since I'm a sucker for a well defended opinion. to you and Michael Fox!

Good list. I think Haynesworth is a DT. And some of these players (Asomugha, in particular) may get the franchise tag. Otherwise, good run down of potential impact FA's.

Jacobs will likely stay with the Giants. Ward will be starting somewhere next year, unlike Sproles.

Haynesworth will likely be kept with the franchise tag.

Bobby Engram and Brian Dawkins are worn down and I don't think anyone is going to get excited over either of them.

some other free agents:

QB Kurt Warner

QB Matt Cassel

QB Kerry Collins

WR Lance Moore (RFA)

WR Nate Washington

LB Jonathan Vilma

LB Ray Lewis

LB Mike Peterson

LB Angelo Crowell

S Sean Jones

Boldin didn't resign recently. He's still under contract.

Sproles will certainly be signed (or resigned), but IMO he won't be brought in anywhere to be a feature back. Consequently, if he is in the top 10 available free agents, that tells me it's a weak class.

Engram is not a coveted free agent. He will be 36 in January. Old possession WRs aren't that hard to find.

Hard to imagine Dawkins playing somewhere other than Philly.

Garcia will be 39. I don't see him as a coveted free agent. Yes, he'll be on a roster somewhere, but I wouldn't assume he'll be starting. If a 39 year old backup QB is 6th on the list, this is a weak class.

I doubt any of the players named above will be in any NFL GM's top 10... and maybe not Housh either.

You didn't mention any offensive linemen, and there will be a number of them who will be valued highly. You didn't list Matt Cassell, Kurt Warner, or Kyle Orton, all of whom will likely be valued higher than Garcia. You didn't list Ray Lewis, though, like Dawkins, I doubt he'll go anywhere. You didn't list Bart Scott, James Farrior, or Jonathan Vilma. You didn't list Dawan Landry. And so on.

You have Jacobs and especially Housh too high. Haynesworth, Peppers, Asomugha, and Suggs are all definitely higher than Housh, maybe Jacobs as well. And so are some of the other players I named above.

Come to think of it, (and since I mentioned them already) Ray Lewis and Bart Scott have to be considered among the top potential defensive fa's. Lewis is old but can add some Favre-esque leadership and direction to the right sqaud while Scott May be a nice addition to a team looking to fill out its starting lb core.

And to add to Yudkin's Cassell nomination I'll put Kurt Warner's name in the mix as I beleive he is a fa after the season as well.

Unfortunately, it wasn't a Top 26 but a Top 10. You make valid points with everything you said but just out of curiosity, who would be in your Top 10? (That goes for everyone else whose willing -- just so we can get a feel as to where everyone's at)

you think Bart Scott will be in high demand? His stats last year and this year seem to suggest that his level of play has fallen off compared to his breakout 2006 season.

Kyle Orton is also signed through 2010 -- so he won't be available for this years class.

High demand? Compared to the rest of the ufa lb class he offers up some nice potential mixed in with his experience and youth that I'm sure some team will pony up big bucks for him.

Good topic.

I'll begin to start discussing what will happen in free agency in my Hot Reads column, but let's just say that this free agency period may very well be unlike any other we've ever seen due to the CBA expiring.

I'll be surprised if he gets big bucks, but I'm always surprised at some of the players that get big contracts.

I'm not sure, because I'm not sure how to rate the offensive linemen. And obviously any list for a real NFL GM will be tailored by need. I thought Vilma signed an extension once he was traded. Am I wrong?
I don't think so. If he does sign an extension, the Saints will probably have to give the Jets a 2nd round pick as a condition of the trade. I think the Jets would send back a 4th.

 I was going to put Matt Birc at #4, I sweeearrrr, but the stat/player information link I was looking at listed him as not playing this year at all so I thought he had a pretty bad injury or something. It didn't go into detail. I probably should have added Mike Goff or Colombo just to get a little diversity into the list. Also Dewan Landry almost made the list but I edged in Dunta Robinson because I literally sat at my kitchen table and thought about it for like two and a half minutes. It doesn't sound like a lot but if you just sit and think for two and a half minutes its a pretty long time. :PGood list overall though! ;)

The skill and drive is there, he just needs the right unit to put it into use through.
Huh???? Nnamdi's play has tailed off? This guy is undoubtedly the #1 corner in football. Teams rarely ever test him, thus the low INT totals the past couple of seasons. It certainly doesn't mean his play has tailed off, and N.A. will be either #1 or #2 on every team's wish list this offseason. But he'll be a Raider in '09......and hopefully beyond.

Stats:2005-2006: 110 total tackles and 8 interceptions

2007-2008: 64 total tackles and 2 interceptions

I'M NOT SAYING HE'S BAD!

All I'm saying is when compared to his performances in 2005 and 2006, his production has tailed off.

Because it has.

He's still nasty though.

I'll be surprised if he gets big bucks, but I'm always surprised at some of the players that get big contracts.
It's possible that Rex Ryan has been using him differently but Scott's impact has been significantly down this year. With Jarrett Johnson's improvement, Scott may only be the 4th best LB on the team right now.The announcers for Sunday's game in Cincy were speculating that Housh would take a hard look at Baltimore in the offseason. I don't think they had any solid basis for doing so but it's pretty interesting to imagine him going someplace where he'll make an impact and get a chance to win, like Crabtown. He'd be a big hit around here, much like Derrick Mason has become. And it ain't Kyle Boller throwing the rock anymore.

Stats:2005-2006: 110 total tackles and 8 interceptions2007-2008: 64 total tackles and 2 interceptionsI'M NOT SAYING HE'S BAD! All I'm saying is when compared to his performances in 2005 and 2006, his production has tailed off. Because it has. He's still nasty though.
Tackles/INTs aren't necessarily great indicators of CB effectiveness (arguably, the best corners will have less of both)

I'd argue that his 2007-2008 numbers actually equate to better production. His job is to prevent his cover from catching the ball. If they don't even throw his direction that is the best possible outcome. He's numbers say he's doing his job even better these days.

Fantasy Football aside, Asomugha is arguably the top free agent available. I think Haynesworth deserves some consideration as well but his health may knock him down a bit. From a GM's perspective, big-athletic-shut down corners are very difficult to find. Asomugha takes a rec. out of the game, opposing teams just don't go after him...that's the only thing that has limited his numbers. Anyone that watches tape on him realizes that he is the most dominant corner in the NFL, not just the most dominant CB available in free agency. Is Haynesworth the most dominant DT-DL, I think that's arguable...Ngata for one has been able to stay on the field and IMO is just as dominant (Ngata isn't a free agent though). If I were Asomugha there is no way I'd sign with Oakland, I don't see why he'd stay unless he's franchised. Just out of curiousity if he's hit with the franchise tag, the players' agreement does not change (unlikely), can Oakland franchise him again the following year?

Dawan Landry (safety) is going to be a great value for whomever signs him. The caveat (sp?) with him is the lingering affect of the neck injury. Is it a situation similar to what P. Holmes suffered or something that he can recover from without issue. He was developing nicely with Ed Reed, I hope Bmore can keep him but they can't keep everyone.

Ngata has not been as dominant as Haynesworth IMO. Maybe on a D that is better at run defense...but Haynesworth is still solid against the run and adds that ability to pressure the QB.

I can't see Dunta Robinson leaving the Texans, that would be monumentally bad for their secondary which is already almost non-existent. Dunta was playing at a pro-bowl level before his injury mid-season last year. I can only see the Texans letting him go if they think he'll never recover to where he used to be. My guess is they'll either try to resign him on an incentive based contract or they will franchise him.

The Titans have the largest cap space in the league, they should easily be able to resign Albert Haynesworth. He's worth every penny to their defense.

Peppers would look nice in Green Bay. Of course, Haynesworth would too. A Pickett/Haynesworth combo would be downright bad ###.
Agreed...not sure TT would pony up that money though. But you never know, he gave Woodson more than I thought he was worth. With Jolly and Harrell able to come in and spell both of them when they are tired too.Plus, I don't think TN is letting Haynesworth out of here...and I don't think he will get franchised either after the year he has had, staying relatively healthy, and not causing any trouble.

How is Engram a more important FA than Vilma or Robinson?
I think everyone's forgetting that he caught 94 balls for nearly 1,200 yards and 6 TD's in 2007. He's a wide receiver. Out of all the positions, I would think that WR is the most kind to those who are getting up there in age. He's 35 right now and will be 36 for the majority of next season. If he stays healthy, he's going to have a good year, I'm sure of it.As a side note, I'm going to breakdown the free agency periods by position and do Top 5's for each. I think that'll be the best way to do it.
