Irish's Weis causes 'circus' during visit to Elkhorn star

BY MITCH SHERMAN

If Nebraska didn't already know it would have a recruiting fight for Trevor Robinson, official notice has been served.

Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis caused quite a stir on Tuesday in the halls of Elkhorn High School during a stop to check on Robinson, who was offered a scholarship by the Irish last September on the first day juniors were eligible to receive them.

"It was kind of a circus," Elkhorn football coach Mark Wortman said. "The kids thought it was great. There were autographs signed. They were taking pictures with their phones."

Robinson ranks as a top target for the class of 2008, with offers from Notre Dame, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Boston College. The 6-foot-5, 290-pound offensive lineman earned first-team All-Nebraska honors last fall as a junior.

Though NCAA rules prohibited Weis from talking with Robinson on the visit, the coach spent time visiting with Wortman and Elkhorn Principal Bary Habrock.

"Very nice guy," Wortman said. "He was real talkative, and I think he gets that (reaction) wherever he goes. People know him."

Weis allowed the Elkhorn students to view one of his three Super Bowl rings won as offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots.

Wortman even chatted with Weis about the NFL playoffs, in particular the Patriots' AFC title game on Sunday at Indianapolis. Weis told the Elkhorn coach that he was invited by New England to offer his help from the press box.

Wortman said Weis declined, mindful of his current job and Notre Dame's proximity in South Bend, Ind., to many fans of the Colts.

The visit made a "big impression" on Robinson, Wortman said.

"He flew here just for this reason," Wortman said. "He said he wants Trevor to know that he's special, that he's a good fit for Notre Dame."

Expect a similar stop on the recruiting trail soon from the Huskers.
I know another pair of eyes is another pair of eyes, but does it shock anyone else that New England would even ASK him to do this? It doesn't seem right on any level, and it also smacks of panic from Belichick. :(

What seems wrong about it? I think it's a great idea.

I don't believe this is the first time since he left that Weiss would have watched a Pats game in the coaches box.

this is again, the media making mountains out of mole hills.

How does it make your offensive coordinator feel?I think Mangini should help out also.
Why? I think the Pats have enough ball boys

I'm sure he would bust into the press room and start pushing poor Charlie around too. Well, either Charlie or someone he can handle, like a 12 year old.

Actually, the media just mentions it. The OP is the one making a mountain out of a mole hill with his Belichick is panicking comment.

Still haven't gotten over the "tuck rule" eh?

I don't. Thank god he's not. As a DC Mangini was a major step down. Their defense is even better this year without him, even after losing players in the off season.

Man, that just doesn't seem right to even ask...Kudos to Weis for saying 'no.'
Ever heard of self-importance? Weis has a HUGE ego. Anyone see him on 60 minutes? I dont believe for a SECOND that the Patriots asked Weis to help out either with their gameplan or in the coaches box. Thats just silly.

Better prepared?

I can hear it now.

BB: Hey charlie, we're going to be in your neighborhood this weekend. Come down and join the party. We'll set you up.

CW: Naw, Bill, I've got to work on recruiting...

BB: Tell you what... You can sit in the booth with Josh. I'm sure he'd let you call a couple plays. What better way to recruit than to be seen in the booth when we pick them apart again and go to the Super Bowl?!

<guffaws all around>

Definitely a panic move.

Seriously, does ANYONE believe this report? This is so stupid it is funny. The Patriots are a very different team than the one that Weiss coached 2 years ago. He doesnt even know the players. He didnt exactly do a bang up job against LSU in his last game. Do you really think Belichick is going to want him to "help" his offensive coordinator? Dumb, just dumb. Even if he really said it, Weiss just talks to hear himself talk.

Maybe they can get Belichick up in the coaches' box too and all of the reporters can feel safe on the sidelines again.

Charlies Weis ran out of things to talk to with the principle, so he goes off and starts lieing. Nice one Charlie!

Exactly what kind of "help" could Charlie Weis give sitting in the press box?

Seems like he's just talking out of his ####.
