The reason some fantasy leagues stay together (1 Viewer)

Tough As Nails

Glave Master
Been with the guys in a league since 1987. 6 of the original 8 are still in. 12 all the same owners now for the last 10 years. Here's a cool, quick story as to why it has worked.

3-way tie for first. Commish sends out the e-mail stating the seeds for the playoffs and the money distribution. Some smack talk occurs, naturally. About 24-hours goes by and the team that finished first finally sends a message to gloat. So we thought. Turns out that his message was to point out that the Commish messed up the tie-breaker. He shouldn't be the top guy. He should be 2nd. He was right...the rules were misinterpreted. The Commish apologizes profusely and the rest of the league immediately sends messages to the guy who pointed out the error saying how cool it was to come forward like that. No whining. No complaining. No cut-throat yelling and screaming over a game we play for fun (not quite for fun...the difference cost the guy about $300). Everybody will be back next season and everybody will have fun again because 'spirit of the game' and 'friendly' before 'competition' rule the day.

 very cool. My league has been around since we were sophmores in high school, so about 12 years now...this would be the case with about 11 of the 12 owners in my league. The 12th isnt being allowed back next year.

Yep. Very cool. Our league dates back to 1995 w/ 7 of 10 owners still participating. The others either moved away and couldn't dedicate the time, or lost interest. However, we still allowed them to chat on our board and they've provided some of the funniest moments.

Though are buy-in is only $150, the trophy is what everyone covets. Our commish has always been the same guy, and I only co-commish in the event of something crazy. Interestingly, our rule book only has about 10 rules w/ number 1 being have fun, number 2 is no whining. The others detail what is and is not acceptable.

Great to hear that there are other leagues that enjoy the same level of success.

15 years now. Most of the original franchises. As commish I send out a fun report on the week's games. And comical Youtube clips, football related.

3 way tie for first at the end of the season? Is this the Big 12 version of FF? It's called playoffs.Good story regardless. :goodposting:

:scared:Sounds like our group. We've had 9 of the 12 owners for the last 15 years - I think it is. We have an occasional blow up here and there - Usually because someone called in a lineup and I didn't get a chance to set it till late Sunday and somebody complains, I try to call the people it effects but doesn't always happen.Anyway - we have one guy that is just a mush at FF - he's bizzaro King Midas, whatever he touches turns to crap. He comes back every year :)

22 years now.

12 teams dynasty , started with 8 ( TD only league ) then went to 10 ( Changed to TD and performance scoring ) and finally 12 teams .

It worked cause it s all friend and family and there is no money involved just playing for the pride of winning.

My league has been going since 1992. We've had all the same owners since 1995. The best part is that we have gotten together for a real live draft every single year. It's unusual for us not to get all 12 guys there for the draft. We meet in some exciting place, get a large vacation house and draft (party) for 4 days.

Every year the draft is my single most looked-forward to event. No offense to Christmas, 4th of July, my kids' birthdays and my anniversary but the draft puts them all to shame.

I really believe we'll be doing this until we're all dead.

17 years, 12-team keeper

main reason still together is we have a commissioner-for-life who is our hometown's treasurer so very organized

18 years, ten-team redraft

main reason still together is we rotate commissionership every year so no burnout and the commish gets to make his own scoring rules before the draft so great variety

Now THAT is interesting.... hmmm....

Cool thread.... just to throw in one of my own that I got a bit of a chuckle out of....

At our end of the year meeting last year, for my 14 team, $350 per team league, there was a discussion about changing one of the existing waiver rules. Essentially, the change would necessitate the commissioner to view the transactions before processing them. I pointed out that, as the commish, I could have an unfair advantage and would never want anyone to believe that I put in a claim after I had seen a transaction request from a higher seeded team.

The guys who wanted this change said, "Well, we trust you with $5000 of our money, we would simply trust that you would not do that."

It didn't go through, but I had to laugh when he put it that way.

My league started in 1994 between 3 buddies and my brother while I was away at school. A lot of talent packed onto 4 rosters! It was a yardage league with team defenses.Next season me and another guy joined. The league went to full IDP. Still a lot of talent on 6 teams.Over the years we've expanded to 10 teams, we now run an auction, salary cap, dynasty/contract league with 53 man rosters that pretty much goes year round with roster moves, trades, etc.. We have a rookie draft in the Spring after the NFL draft and then have our league auction prior to the season. All 10 owners are friends, though one of the four "founding fathers" is no longer in the league. 9 of us are married and 8 of us have kids. No money changes hands. Our pride and reputation with our peers is more valuable. Most of us gave up playing in other leagues years ago.It started as a couple of friends deciding to give a league a try on whim. We have a waiting list (of friends and relatives) to get in if any franchises become available. Our league has survived, thrived and evolved because of our friendships.

This is so cool. I used to love live drafts but since the internet explosion, I hardly ever see or hear of live drafts. I would love to be a part of something like this. Kudos to you guys. :kicksrock:

awesome thread!

40 and in my second year of ff. absolutly love it but i get the feeling that the veterans in the league are getting burned out and/or bored with the same ol same ol. what are some of the little things that your league does to keep it fun. and does anybody recommend switching to a dynasty or auction type system for something different?

any opinions/stories are appreciated, thanks.

14 team going on 8 yrs. Only rule is that you have to be present for the live draft, which has caused a couple of members that moved away to to lose their spot. Some members fly in for labor day weekend to "visit" old friends (and draft). There's actually a waiting line for someone to drop out, in which the newbies will compete in an easy nfl combine, best time wins the open spot. So far 13 members have been constant through out the 8 yrs. Toughest draft out of all my leagues, everyone is boys, but fools come to play. And if you make a bad move, you'll hear about it every year.

 My league started when we were in highschool 20 years, and a dynasty league shortly after. As time has moved on, our group has spread out across the city and got busy with family and different things. I look foward to the draft every year, it is the only time I get to see a lot of really good old friends.

League's stay together because of good management.....period.
Good management is certainly an important factor and otherwise good leagues will probably fail without it. But you've still got to have good owners. My local league is finishing up its 17th year. Six of the original 12 are still in it, 12 of the 16 have been involved for at least 10 years. The funny thing is, we didn't even know each other very well when we started. Yet we've had exactly one fight in all that time that cost us an owner. Good people are out there.
