The respective merits of various free leagues (1 Viewer)

Starting up a new, low-hassle work FF league. Just a redraft ... no need to carry over players from year to year. Really just need something that will serve as an automated stat-tracker, a waiver-wire clearinghouse, and so on. Since we don't need a lot of frills or esoteric scoring, everyone's agreed to go with some type of free online league, preferring to leave the money we'd spend on a pay league in the kitty.

I'm just starting to gather info on the two free leagues proposed by the other owners, Yahoo! and CBS Sportsline. My findings so far are that:

- CBS Sportsline free leagues don't allow flex positions or any kind of scoring-system customization. Our scoring rules will be simple (no PPR) ... but I think I'd like to be able to at least do some tweaking. Everyone seems to really want a flex spot, too.

- Yahoo! free leagues seems to be a lot more customizable if you skip over their Express Set-up. However, I'm having trouble getting specifics on just what you can adust in a Yahoo! free league. I'm getting ready to just go through the steps of setting up a free league over there just to be able to see the options -- was hoping to find a FAQ sheet or something.

So ... what kinds of experiences do you all have working with free leagues? To be clear: this won't be a public league. Everyone in this league will know each other, so the usual admonitions against public free leagues won't apply. Also, there will be a league buy-in, so the league itself won't actually be free to the participants -- we just want a free league site for general league maintenance.

Thanks in advance for any general advice or recommendations about using free online FF services for league maintenance.

Yahoo IMO by far offers the best free FF experience. It beats ESPN and especially CBS in customization, presentation, and functionality, and best of all everything is free including Stattracker. And you can adjust just about every stat imaginable in a Yahoo league.

I like Yahoo's free league setup features, as well. Two or three years ago, they started offering fractional scoring, so that made it even better. As Commissioner, you can set your draft order manually, you can modify the amount of times between draft picks (30, 60, 75, 90 seconds) and you can create bonus offensive scoring for long TD passes/rushes/catches. You can make flex positions of RB/WR or RB/WR/TE, too. PPR scoring is either .5 or 1, although I wish I was able to give 1.5 for TEs. They reserve a space for a Commissioner's note (for your league's Constitution), their Support team is responsive, you can track your team on an iPhone app, and their Stat Tracker feature is free, as well. Good, free site.
