The Roller Coaster that is Mario Williams (1 Viewer)

How is that even remotely possible? I get that teams double and triple team him and blah, blah, blah....but you mean to tell me he didn't happen to fall into an RB for at least an assist?

Did he even play today?

Last week in my IDP dynasty league Tamba Hali scored me 0 pts so I benched him this week he scored 20 pts now that is a roller coaster ride (did I mention I am losing by 12 right now ?)

All DL are like this in fantasy football. Mario had a huge 3 sack day last week. Same thing happens with Freeney, Jared Allen, etc. Allen had a 4 game stretch last season in which in 3 of those games he had 2 total tackles (1 solo). Mario will finish with his typical 45-50 tackles, 10 sacks, 2-3 ff at season's end.

Exactly....There are small exceptions to this but you have to be willing to trade off big games for mediocrity. There are some guys in my league that refuse to draft DL with big name/big play potential such as Mario, Peppers, Tuck and Allen. They would rather have guys like Ngata, Gregg or Williams that are much more consistent with tackles and less likely to give you a goose-egg. Depending on your scoring system, it isn't that bad of an idea really.I just traded for Mario before week 3 and had a feeling he would crap the bed. 1. because this is what high profile defensive ends do during the year and 2. I just traded for him. Mario is going to have a huge year, just have patience and never bench him even when the match-up isn't all that great. These guys are frustrating to watch week to week as far as FF goes, but keep him in there or you'll be back here posting " I benched Mario this week because he was terrible the last two weeks! Then he blows up on my bench..." Gotta take the good with the bad and ride em out.

Don't bench your studs. This definitely applies to DE's too, especially given the relative rarity of 4-3 RDE's who can get double digit sacks.

Even Randy moss has 2/30/0 days. Deal with it.

Just to add: I started him yesterday opposite Ray Edwards. My total point output from my DE's rhymes with "hero".

I have owned Mario for the past 4 years (dynasty owner) so I have seen the drill before. I watched him last week against WAS and he was an absolute monster. Outside of the injury talk this past week I didn't think much about him and his match up...

I also started Osi and got another nice 0...

I just can't fathom how an elite DE doesn't tackle an RB even once during the course of an entire game. It's just mind boggling to say the very least.

And frustrating as hell to put up multiple 0's.

Sorry for the rant.

Or maybe, just maybe the Cowboys game-planned for him and double teamed and chipped him on passing downs, and away from him on run downs. Just sayin'. A DE getting shut out is not nearly as unusual as a stud WR getting shut out, for example.

If it makes you feel any better, in one league I started Mario Williams, Ray Edwards, and William Hayes. All 3 of my DL threw up goose eggs. :lmao: and

Nothing to worry about here. Pressured Romo frequently, but the Cowboys were getting the ball out quickly on most snaps. Defensive ends can be hit and miss against Dallas because of how they run the ball (lot of draws and up the middle runs with Barber). Texans started rotating Kevin Bentley in for Xavier Adibi, too, as the Cowboys were attacking Adibi (who was on the opposite side of Williams often) early.

Didn't see any indication that he'd re-aggravated an injury and he's got OAK next week.

I always remember a couple years ago when I was playing the top team in our league, wanted "surer" points. So I benched Osi. That was week 4 in 2007 I lost the game because of it.

Lots of DEs get "Julius Peppers-itis"; especially the really good ones. They are feast or famine because that's pretty much how a sack play is. You either come up big or whiff. Teams recognize the elite pass rushers and try to eliminate them on gameday. They usually sell out to protect their QB and it either ends up working or failing miserably.

So what you are left with is a pass rusher trying to get to the QB and keep commanding the double teams, etc and he's simply not in the area a lot of times to make the play on a runner (he's chewing up the edge on a TE and lineman in the backfield and the runner is LEAVING the backfield in the other direction).

If the opponent runs screens, maybe the DE doubles back and gets back into it, etc, but when you have teams (like the cowboys) who run draws, hit a specific hole, or max protect to throw down the field, its just a bad mismatch. So, you play your elite DE and hope he makes a mockery of the o-line.
