The "Say Something Positive" Thread (1 Viewer)

Alright, I'm getting sick of this. The refs are awful, Montana is a jerk, etc. etc.

Here's my challenge: This thread is the bastion of non-negativity.

So, answer me some questions:

1. What did you like about the Super Bowl? (Sarcastic responses have about 35 other threads to go to.)

2. What did Pittsburgh do well yesterday to actually deserve to win?

3. Where could Seattle improve?

4. What do you like about the NFL right now?

Not much. It was a boring game.
2. What did Pittsburgh do well yesterday to actually deserve to win?
Cowher outcoached Holmgren, who was far too conservative (attempting very long field goals and punting with 6 1/2 minutes left?)

3. Where were Seattle's shortcomings?
The receivers dropped too many passes and the clock management was terrible at the end of the first half.
4. What do you like about the NFL right now?
It isn't the NBA, NHL or MLB.

1) Everything, the worst superbowl ever (which this was not) is better then the best sunday once football ends2) They did what they always do, enough. They were outplayed in the first half badly and hung in, they hit hard, they capitalized on mistakes, and they just won.

3) Make less mistakes. That happens, was it the big game gettgin to them? did they just have an off night...dunno, but less mistakes and they win.

4) See #1

I won't go point by point but the Pittsburgh offensive playcalling was pretty good. Seattle was able to shut down much of the conventional stuff but the end around, WR pass, QB runs were perfect change ups.

Cowher called a great game all around.

Try this:

#3 - What did Seattle do well?

Both teams have a lengthy list of things they could have improved on. If you want positives we both have some things we did well.

1. It was a competitive game and featured some big plays (longest run, longest INT return, trick play for a TD). 2. The Steelers made plays and tackled very well.

3. Catch passes. The Seahawks are very good. They run the west coast offense with precision....but they dropped too many passes aside from Jurevicius, who was pretty darn good.

4. The NFL rules. Now, if we can just get a labor agreement in place.

Let me explain my "Cowher outcoached Holmgren" a little better. I think Seattle had a better gameplan coming in, but I think Cowher was a better game coach than Holmgren was last night. I was surprised at how conservative Holmgren was several times. Two FG attempts over 50 yards. Punting with 6 1/2 minutes left when you need two scores. It seemed like he was playing not to lose instead of to win at times.

1. What did you like about the Super Bowl? (Sarcastic responses have about 35 other threads to go to.)
When it finished. Sorry, couldn't resist.
2. What did Pittsburgh do well yesterday to actually deserve to win?
Use Seattle's overagressiveness on D to their advantage.
3. Where could Seattle improve?
Receivers hold on to the ball. Boulware stay focused.
4. What do you like about the NFL right now?
The NFL Draft.

1. What did you like about the Super Bowl? (Sarcastic responses have about 35 other threads to go to.)

My team was in it. If 6 months ago I was offered a 13 win season and a couple of playoff wins but told I wouldn't win the Superbowl I probably would have taken the offer. I'm trying my best to not let my continually raised expectations diminish what was a very good season.

2. What did Pittsburgh do well yesterday to actually deserve to win?

Hard not to be negative here because, quite frankly, they didn't play all that well. I do have to give the credit for not letting the game get away from them in the first half. Seattle was moving the ball very well and Pittsburgh had three consecutive 3 and outs. It would have been very easy to get down 10-0 there and start to lose control. They kept their composure and put together the scoring drive to end the half which basically negated an entire half of dominance by their opponent.

3. Where could Seattle improve?

The played fine. I know that sounds silly considering they lost and only put up 10 points but the reality is that they had nearly 400 yards of offense, contained the Steelers with the exception of just 1 or 2 plays, and were in the game the whole time. I'm proud of them.

4. What do you like about the NFL right now?

It allows me to keep playing fantasy football. Other then that, not a whole heck of a lot. I think it's outrageous that fans have been priced out of the superbowl. It's all so corporate and pre-packaged that it simply feels sterile. For the last 4 or 5 years now the Superbowl has simply lacked heart IMHO. I'm not sure how to get it back, but I know it's gone.

1. What did you like about the Super Bowl? The Randel El pass.

2. What did Pittsburgh do well yesterday to actually deserve to win? Their D was good, they made big plays, and they got a couple of 1st downs at the end to virtually seal the game.

3. Where could Seattle improve? Their D is good but not great. Jeremy Stevens needs to work on his hands. Don't get 3 D starters injured during the game again.

4. What do you like about the NFL right now? That if Bill Cowher can end years of frustration and disappointment by winning the Super Bowl, then their is hope for other teams who have suffered disappointment.

It was close through most of the game, so it was at least entertaining. Not as good as Den-GB, but still.
2. What did Pittsburgh do well yesterday to actually deserve to win?
They made the big plays when they counted. The pass to Ward on 3rd and forever, the Willie Parker run, and the ARE gadget-play basically won the game for them.
3. Where could Seattle improve?
Clock management. It was as if they had never practiced the 2 minute drill before.
4. What do you like about the NFL right now?
The draft is coming up . . .

1. I Liked that it was a defensive battle for the most part, punctuated by very exciting big plays.

2. Steelers defense played HUGE in this big game. They contained Seattle's agressive offensive success to between the 20s and they got pressure when they needed to. The made immediate adjustments on Darryl Jackson's eary success and came up with big hits and big plays. Most importantly, they didn't allow Seattle to get to the outside, which is clearly one of the Hawk's strengths.

3. I would say the obvious is to resign Alexander this offseason. He was doing a job on the Steelers and they simply didn't use him enough. He should have had 30 carries, especially in the red zone. What happened to Alexander in the Red Zone by the way?

4. I like that destiny plays a role. It may not have been a Superbowl for the ages, but it was a legendary playoff run for the Steelers. We may not see something that like in our lifetimes again and hopefully it will have its place in the chapters of NFL history. Another thing is that I can't remember a time when there were so many exciting QBs in the league at one time. Palmer, Roth, the Mannings, Brees, Vick, and more... Fantastic!

1. What did you like about the Super Bowl? (Sarcastic responses have about 35 other threads to go to.)

1. I like when the lesser known players (Ike Taylor, Willie Parker) step up and make major contributions. I also liked that Matt Hasslebeck had a very strong game and quieted a lot of critics (I myself was also skeptical but he played great).

2. What did Pittsburgh do well yesterday to actually deserve to win?

2. Big Ben made 3-4 huge plays with his feet, especially in the fourth quarter. They also made the necessary big plays to blow the contest open. Finally, they closed out the game like only they know how - smashmouth football.

3. Where could Seattle improve?

3. The Seahawks lack a killer instinct that instills fear in the other teams. And it starts from the coach, imo. Holmegren made some questionable calls. The one that stands out is punting on fourth and long with only 6 minutes left. Even if they lose possession and give up a FG, its still only a two possession game (it was a two possession game anyway). Thats the only thing lacking imo.

4. What do you like about the NFL right now?

4. So many things:

A. I love the passion of the fans. In these playoffs, Pittsburghs fans showed how dedicated and loyal they are. Their terrible towers are a great prop that adds to the game environment. Seattles home field advantage in the playoffs was also tremendous - almost deafening at times.

B. I love football's "complexity". I also love the patience required to succesfully drive down the field. In that regard, its unlike any other sport in the world (except maybe Chess, if thats a sport). Think about it - a simple running play requires all 11 players to work in unison while each performing their own specific task - all to compile a modest gain. And to think that on every play all 11 defenders are running an equally complex counter-scheme to bust up the play. Just fascinating to watch.

C. On the flip-side, I love the explosive, game-changing plays that can swing the game in an instant. Think a Fast Willie Parker Running play or an Antwan Randel El reverse option.

D. I love that Bill Cowher has been with the Steelers for 14 years. I love that Pittsburgh has had two coahces over the last 40 years.

I havent been negative, but I'll play along.

1. What did you like about the Super Bowl? (Sarcastic responses have about 35 other threads to go to.)

A few things - The Bus winning, Pittsburgh showing again that this is a team game, the love the Steelers have for the Bus, Randle El's TD pass. Cowher and his family.

2. What did Pittsburgh do well yesterday to actually deserve to win?

Everything. Big plays, overcoming poor plays, TEAM play.

3. Where could Seattle improve?

switch to the 3-4 and trade for Ray Lewis. (Or find a player with his intensity)

4. What do you like about the NFL right now?

Everything, this is America's game.

Can I just hang out in here? I can't believe all the whining over what was, in my opinion, a pretty well-officiated game. Certainly not an egregious jobbing as some are claiming.

The negativity is killing me.

Sorry, man. If it makes you feel any better, the "questionable" calls should in no way take away from the Steelers achievements this year. They had a fantastic season and are deserving Super Bowl champs. Fast Willie is exciting. The fans are rabid. Cowher and Rooney are ever-deserving. And Ben is a keeper. Congrats.

STEELERS ARE THE WORLD CHAMPIONS!

ESPN certainly comes in for more than its share of criticism on this board, but I really enjoyed watching ESPN Classic and ESPN 2 over the weekend. That "40 Hours To The Super Bowl" was great. One really good show was "Hidden Images" spotlighting some key Super Bowl moments we haven't been exposed to that much over the years. One featured a Giants' O-lineman who missed his assignment and cost the Giants an Ottis Anderson TD in Super Bowl XXV, forcing the team to settle for a late FG which in turn gave the Bills the chance to win it on Norwood's ill-fated kick. Good stuff. All the highlights really got me in the Super Bowl mood.

My sentiments exactly. Even though I think Seattle got screwed badly on a few calls, there is no way of knowing who would have won if they had gone differently. In the end, the Steelers are deserving Super Bowl champs.

I thought it was a great game. ABC got a relatively close and very entertaining game. Personally, I thought the Steelers were going to pound the Seahawks a little harder than they did but I enjoyed watching it.

Seeing Bettis get the happy ending was pretty cool. Conversely, seeing the NFL trot out Brady for the coin toss was shabby. Are you kidding? The bigger human interest story line had to be Cowher getting the win. I do not think people realize what he has done as a coach. It takes a hell of a lot of talent to lose that many AFC Championship games. I am happy he will now be recognized for the great coach he really is.

It was evident Seattle was in trouble the minute their 2nd string safety (Hamlin's back-up) hurt himself tackling Ward. I cannot remember his name but he barely played, if he played at all, afterwards. He was the player that would have been responsible for helping with coverage on the Ward/El play. The 3rd string guy got burned...badly. He was also out of position on damn near every play and got sucked up into the wash around the line more often than not.

Cowher feeds his family with those gadget plays, Why did Holmgren think it would be any different on SuperBowl Sunday? Somebody needs to teach the Seattle defense about contain and do a little homework on team tendencies.

Cowher looked very loose prior to the game starting. Holmgren appeared to be white knuckling his play card. Big Ben was smiling during warm-ups. Hasselbeck looked tight.

The Steelers made some immediate adjustments on defense once it was clear what the Seahawks intended to do against apparent 8 man fronts. Jackson was taken out of the game in the second half. The Steelers stuck with their game plan and readjusted. The Seahawks dumped the run WAY too early and did not adapt on the fly. Holmgren forgot who brought him to the dance...Alexander.

I just do not see what so many folks are banging the game, offciating, etc...

What I like about the NFL -

The half time shows of the super bowl are go bad that I can watch puppy bowl without worrying about missing something. :bag:

I posted this in responce to another post in the game thread, so it sounds a bit odd here alone. Anyway, some things that I really enjoyed from the game:

No, it was less than entertaining even as a Steelers fan. It was a game littered with mistakes and very few big plays. The Ds controlled the Os and that never makes for the kind of SB that people want to see. I for one enjoyed watching W.Jones and M.Stong constantly push their man wide and offer some of the best pass blocking I have ever seen vs. very athletic LBs. I also enjoyed watching Hassy deliver precise quick timing throws early in the game. I enjoyed watching Fanica show why he is an All Pro G as he not only pulled out and pancaked several defenders, but maintained control of the inside in pass protection. Hampton was IMO, the best player on the field last night. His burst off the line and push were incredible vs. a very strong Oline in Sea. He was maintaining 2 blockers at all times and should have been congratulated more for his efforts than the media did. Some other things I enjoyed were the plays Ben was able to make when things broke down. This guy has got great poise and has a serious knack for the "street ball" type situations. No, I don’t find it at all surprising that most fans or just people who casually watched the game found these things even half as entertaining as I did. All in all, it was an ugly SB. Both teams made mistakes and while I think both teams were clearly deserving of representing their Conferences. One can't help but think that other teams would have offered more entertaining games. Lets not kid ourselves though; the 2 best teams in football over the course of the season and playoffs took the field last night. Not only that, but there were things worth seeing weather you want to see/acknowledge them or not.

1. What did you like about the Super Bowl? (Sarcastic responses have about 35 other threads to go to.)

Watching Cowher and his all-female family finally get to celebrate a SB win. I have seen so many NFL Films shots of him bucking up his wife and daughters after tough losses; it was nice to see yesterday's family moment.

2. What did Pittsburgh do well yesterday to actually deserve to win?

Shut down Alexander when it counted, and came up with the big plays.

3. Where could Seattle improve?

Experience. The clock-management issues seemed to be a result of nerves. Very surprising considering Holmgren's experience.

4. What do you like about the NFL right now?

The fact that on any given Sunday anything can happen. A couple of years ago, when he was talking about why he absolutely loved baseball, Tim Kurchjian (sp.) of ESPN said something like "Every week I see something that I have never seen before." That about sums it up for me. 108 yard missed-FG return for TD? Yup. Same game as the funniest FG attempt ever? Yup. Two different coaches going for the win rather than a (nearly) sure-thing kick to tie? Yup. Mike Carey, 'miked up' for the WC game, explaining why no penalty on Pittman after Taylor spit at him: "But he threw a punch!" "He was spit at. What would you do?"

Despite all it's flaws (mainly the poor quality of the officiating throughout the playoffs), it still is a great game.
