I was listening to Sirius NFL and some former players were talking about how the feel the NFL needs to be doing more for the former players and it got me thinking.
Most players lose their wealth X number of years after their career. There's quite a few articles out there illustrating this. When people are in bad shape they blame others without pointing the finger at themselves. I often feel this is the case with retired NFL players.
SOME of the injuries after careers talk is intelligent and well thought out and doesn't give me this ugh vibe. Much of it though makes me want to ask "What did you think would happen?"
As far as I know, you have to look at CEOs to find a better retirement plan than what the NFL offers.
Maybe what retired NFL players need is friends-friends that will remind them they can't live in a 5 million dollar home with 50k dollars in monthly expenses when their income won't support that. A friend that they can talk to about how to "be" in the real world and how to adjust. Naturally, I don't know, but I'm just spit-balling
At this point everyone knows the risks. Some of these rich and famous old timers say now that it wasn't worth it but I'm skeptical they would have rather worked some manual labor job for 30K a year for 40 years.
NFL players, like most people, live for today. few planned for the future. That's not entirely on the league or union. But the union has to push for long term benefits like medical coverage.
As for retired players who squandered whatever they made? The league only owes them what was promised or for what the owners should have known.
My take is that the players are not owed a thing. They got a paycheck and a fat one at that. They knew the risks.
It shouldn't but it does bother me when I hear former players complain that they're not being taken care of, they sacrificed their bodies, blah blah blah. They had a choice whether to play or not and get paid like they did or not. I for one, do not believe they should be entitled to a single solitary thing. Nothing.
