The Top 300 Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: 50 Lists received. 2: Seinfeld 1: Breaking Bad (15 Viewers)

Is the NCIS the original or all 700 of them combined?
If it the original, I don't know how it is not listed higher
Well, apparently if a show went over 6 seasons it was banned from certain peoples list on principle. Doesn't matter how good they were. Over 6 seasons......must be bad.
That's not quite what I mean and it isn't a firm rule. There's a tendency for shows to get worse and worse the more they drag on, like the creators may have had an original arc in mind but the show was successful so they just keep on cranking out shows and seasons and they get progressively worse. Those types of shows often ended up getting bumped from my list. I definitely have some that lasted a while and made it to my list, though.

That wasn't the case with NCIS. NCIS didn't make it to my list because I'm not a 64 year-old woman named Midge. :scared:
My wife stopped watching when Mark Harmon left the show

I was going to do a list but ran out of time. Womp-womp.

I wonder if anyone besides me would have had Impractical Jokers on their list?
I have this very high. It simply is so much fun.
TV shows are allowed to be fun. The camaraderie and friendships are what make this show.
The International versions lack the bond these guys have.
The Punishment where Joe gives the other 3 tattoos is just one of a million highlights

I find the show very funny but the premise is too thin to call it one of the greatest shows (imo).
Premise? It seems pretty iron clad and clear.
"Warning: The following program contains scenes of graphic stupidity among lifelong friends who compete to embarrass each other"
They do a remarkable job of making sure the general public arent the butt of the jokes. Something the international versions fail to do.

The first of my listed ones to appear in The Mentalist. My #32.
Simon Baker as Patrick Jane is simply awesome.
The end reveal of Red John was always going to be anti climatic, but it was the Journey.
Without Baker this show is not viable.

Tom and Jerry was a bit creepy when they talked a few times in some early cartoons. Also jumped the shark when they later became friends.

Yeah definitely not a lot of substance, but for me - at this point in my life - it's all about mindless entertainment that I can have on "in the background" when I'm doing other things (ie, relaxing).

I really don't watch much else than IJ or live sports these days.

I should have considering my ringtone is "Whose phone is riiiiiinging, Mine! Mine!" (if you know, you know).

Great show that I think I regret not including now.
I'll admit, it's not the same without Joe Gatto. They hit a stride for about 4-5 seasons there where every single bit was gold. It just doesn't have the same dynamic anymore and they do less bits per show now. I still watch, and fortunately have about 75 episodes :bag:DVR'ed that I can pop on at any given time.

Maybe it's sad to say but the show is a BIG part of my life right now (dealing with stress, etc.).

I agree that the dynamic between the guys is fun and real. Reminds me of just hanging out with my best pals, shootin' the %&$# and giving each other crap about stupid stuff that happened 20 years ago.

The tattoo punishment is classic. Q's tat is actually pretty sweet though.

I had a couple on this list, Carnivale was great but sadly only got 2 seasons

Rick and Morty has some great humor (a lot of it is pretty dark), unfortunately the creator turned out to be a bit of a scumbag but I still laugh at it
Check out the Vat of Acid episode if you want a good taste of the show

Malcom didn’t make my cut but I liked that show a lot

My daughter and her husband love this show. I couldn't get into it. It reminds me very much of Tom Green but scripted.
If it reminds you of Tom Green, then it is completely understandable that you couldn't get into it.
I feel like you're trying to say something here. Should it not remind me of Tom Green? Because it does.
I can't say what it should remind you of, only that if you're getting a Tom Green vibe, I get why you didn't like it.

Only one more for me. I might end up with all my shows being chosen before we get to the top 200. This was the highest vote getter so far for me with being on 5 lists.
  • The Mentalist (#46): I could have put it a handful higher. I really enjoyed the banter and sarcasm by Jane. I also liked Cho and his dryness as a counter. Cast fit well and the Red John storyline was compelling until it wasn't. As @John Maddens Lunchbox said the reveal was going to be a letdown no matter what but the getting there was good.

I have a similar type show listed much higher as it was more comedy based but a similar premise. I wasn't sure if either that show or The Mentalist would get much notoriety for something like this. I will be really curious if my other selection gets any love.

Premise? It seems pretty iron clad and clear.

Yes that’s a thin premise and there’s only so much to be done with it. I do love the show and I laugh plenty during it. I’m comfortable with what I said though.
It was always a show that I never sought out to go purposely watch but if I stumbled upon it when I was flipping channels I always enjoyed it and it would suck me in to watch for awhile.

Only the Mentalist made my list but here some thoughts:
  • Loudermilk: Watched a few episodes. It's entertaining and made me chuckle. Just couldn't get into it to finish it.
  • The Amazing Race: A buddy and I actually filled out the app and sent in a tryout video. Never heard back.
  • Chopped: Watched a lot of this for awhile but as someone else said it kind of got old and repetitive.
  • Your Honor: Watched most of the first season. Seemed really slow and just didn't capture me. Never went back.

I love Carnivale and had it as my #8. An eerie mix of Dust Bowl-era culture and counterculture with a quasi-witchcraft vs evil righteousness primary narrative. Would have loved to have seen more seasons but at least it didn't outlive its usefulness. Along with my #2, this is likely the show I've rewatched (from start to finish and every episode in between) the most times.

Big fan of The Amazing Race, but, it didn't make my list. The show is better in concept than execution sometimes. Later seasons haven't seemed as much a "globe-trotting adventure", perhaps they've done everything already and have run out of ideas, or maybe they want to push the team bickering and strategy more, but, it's not quite as good as it could be. I wish they'd spend more time on the amazing sights and experiences the world has to offer, but, lately it's just felt like 'let's quickly run past this major historic site and do a barely-related puzzle'.

Overall, the ranking seems appropriate.

My daughter and her husband love this show. I couldn't get into it. It reminds me very much of Tom Green but scripted.

Are you saying that you didn't like Tom Green? Sorry not trying to be dense but I'm not sure what you mean.

I also chose it. In a strange way being canceled for poor ratings after season 2 worked for me. A show so steeped in mythology leaving many story lines incomplete might be a good thing. Wrapping them up would probably have been more disappointing than leaving it to the imagination.

Of the bottom 30 shows only five of them got lots of viewing from me and I'm pretty sure this one and Magnum PI are the only two I've seen to completion.

Of the ones posted so far, I had World at War and Late Night with Conan O’Brien on mine. My list is pretty doc heavy, and World at War was one of the finest. Love just about everything that Conan has done. My favorite of the Tonight Show/Late Night/Late Show network shows. I’m still angry about Jay Leno taking The Tonight Show back from Conan.

I'm the other World at War voter :hifive:

When it was made in the early 70s, people who were adults during WWII were beginning to die off. The filmmakers were able to get their memories on video and combine them with archival footage and the gravitas of Laurence Olivier's narration. I watched it once when it came out and again with my son on DVD decades later.

“Are we having fun yet?” It looks like I was one of three with Party Down. It was #15 on my list. It became a bit more of a cult show after it aired than during its run (I mean, how many people have Starz anyway?). But a launching point for the career of Adam Scott (before Parks and Rec), Lizzy Caplan, Jane Lynch (before Glee), and Ken Marino.

Be careful when talking about jiggers of alcohol.

There's a new documentary about Tom Green on Prime Video
I saw it. I wasn't a huge fan but when he was funny it was gold. Watching the doc, it was very clear that without him there would have been no Jackass, and probably no I Wish You Would Leave or whatever it's called.

Liking or not liking Green doesn't enter into it. I think they're very different. To me, Green was crass. Robinson is absurdist.

So... if I Think You Should Leave reminded you of Tom Green, I can understand why it didn't appeal to you.

It also made my list (#60). It may be the only good Starz original programming ever.

Ah, ok. That makes sense. Green was crass, I agree. But he was also absurd. I definitely connect the two but can understand why some wouldn't.

The Late Late Show with Craig FergusonEephus5

I probably should have had The Mole on my list because those first two seasons on ABC were brilliant. The celebrity seasons and the revival on Netflix are OK but don't have the same magic.

The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson was a last-minute cut from my list (it was my first draft's #70) after the 45-51s revealed some things that I had missed. For about 2 years early in our marriage, my wife and I watched it regularly before bed, and it was the most deeply weird thing I'd seen on network TV since Late Night with David Letterman in the '80s. Like LNWDL, they would try anything because people staying up that late were more likely to be fascinated by it than repulsed.
I had The Mole on my list, and primarily so high, most because of those first two seasons. I've watched a fair amount of reality TV over the years, and I'm not sure I've ever obsessed over a show like I did the first season of the Mole. Yes, the Celebrity seasons weren't as good, and the Netflix reboot is enjoyable, but those first two ABC seasons were peak entertainment for me.

Yeah, The Mole is another show that I watch but have always felt was better in concept than execution. It's good, but in that fast-food kind of way. I think it's just that there's no clear incentive for how the Mole contestant operates in the game, it's not quite clear how the viewers at home should be watching the show. Plus we're always missing out on a good portion of the Mole Quiz and can't really follow along with the legit contestants either. I guess they feel they need to keep the Mole a secret, although The Traitors does just fine revealing them and their machinations every episode... Maybe somewhere between the two series is the sweet-spot of the Social Deduction genre show? I'm ok with it landing outside the top-300.

For those of you who enjoyed Babylon 5: its creator and main writer, J. Michael Stracynski, wrote The Amazing Spider-Man for Marvel Comics for several years and after Stan Lee might be Peter Parker’s best ever writer.

One of the two votes for "I Think You Should Leave" was mine. If you haven't watched this yet, do yourself a favor and do so immediately.
Total oversight by me. That is the funniest damn show. I saw them live on their little tour, it was funny and they showed 5 skits that didn't make it on air- they were all every bit as funny as anything that did.

I bailed before that. I think it was when Pauley Perrette left.

The timing of this and my winter getaway in Bucerias is terrible. I’m looking forward to some couch time when I get back next week … I won’t be commenting much, but I’m here in spirit!
I'll gladly take your place in Mexico and you can read and post in this thread all day long from my home in the midwest.

I'm feeling dumb for not including at least a dozen documentaries that were in series format. Meh, that's what happens when you procrastinate to the last minute. I've really enjoyed an educational series of documentaries the past couple years I'm fairly certain none of you've seen. I'll give it its due when we wrap up. 30+ hour long episodes. So good.

Checking in before happy hour … some great shows mentioned, but none that I am saddened by their exclusion from my list. Malcolm in the Middle a Your Honor were both considered but neither made the cut. The latter started out great but became somewhat absurd in the chance occurrences that kept happening repeatedly. It just stretched things too far. Shout out to Tom and Jerry that was also initially included in my “short list”.

Back to happy hour at the rooftop pool …

My #10 ranked show that did not make the top 300.

Yellowjackets

In 1996, a NJ high school girls' soccer team travels to Seattle for a national tournament. While flying over Canada, their plane crashes deep in the wilderness, and the surviving team members are left stranded for nineteen months. The series chronicles their attempts to stay alive as some of the team members are driven to cannibalism. It also focuses on the lives of the survivors 25 years later in 2021, as the events of their ordeal continue to affect them many years after their rescue.
They should have watched Surviorman.

Thought about Loudermilk, that one was pretty good.

Boy Meets World was actually #15 on my list.

I've had Conan and Loki appear so far from my list. Huge nerd so I have a lot of Marvel, sci-fi, anime, etc.

Malcom in the Middle and Boy Meets World just missed for me (both in the 70s on my longer list). I'm kind of surprised Malcom isn't higher as I feel like I frequently see it on lists of the greatest shows.

I had The Amazing Race on my list, but way down at #64 and it went off and on my list. I agree with all of your comments and feel like it's lost its way, and it also had some clunker seasons earlier like the one with families.

I had Boston Legal on my list somewhere in the middle of the pack. It is a spin-off of another show on my list, "The Practice" but was much better. The cast was fantastic and it was so over the top that it just worked. One of the finest series endings ever!

Yup. In the last season of the Practice, they killed off most of the main stars and brought in Spader to play Alan Shore.

I was the other one with Chopped. I didn't dig far into competition shows or game shows. I just went with gut reaction and wrote the first ones I'd want to watch or revisit. Yeah, Chopped is a bit repetitive, but it also the main one we watched and I don't get tired of it. Similar what I did with game shows, I just wrote the few down that I loved the most growing up in various ages. Remote Control was a huge part of my MTV watching. I watched a couple episodes for research and I still had a blast with it, so I moved it up in the top 30.

Mork and Magnum were ones that crossed my mind, but I didn't have time to watch either so I left them off. Great start to the countdown and some interesting ideas for watches already. I've never heard of I Think You Should Leave, for example.
