Even in today’s DVR world, I still almost always say “tape”. I’m sure I’m not alone in this.My parents would tape LA Law on the VCR and I'd have all week to watch before they taped over it for the next one. Those were the days.

They were VCR's, not DVR's. But are you sure about the bolded? It seems to me there was a "TV/VCR" button that would allow you to record with the VCR while watching another channel on the TV, as long as the VCR was "cable ready".It was hard to watch everything you wanted to back then - DVRs would basically only record what were actually watching at the time. So a lot of shows went by that I didn’t watch - a few of them I have gone back to over the years. We're all 50, not 70 - do people go back and watch old network dramas from the 80s or were you people watching boring stuff in junior high?189 - L.A. Well it was a co-production with BBC and was filmed entirely in Italy so it made more sense to cast British actors than American actors.Speaking in English is one thing, making them British is a bridge too farYou wanted them to speak Latin?I heard about this show so checked it out. Changed it after 5 minutes and never went back because all the "Romans" had British accents. I may reconsider if MAX ever makes a Victorian drama where the actors all have Italian (or Jersey) accents.188 - Rome

You should check out the British version. I thought that was better and how I first stumbled upon it. Had many of the same players but the host didn't try as hard as Drew Carey and I thought he was better (not that Drew was bad).Whose Line was brilliant when Drew Carey was host. The banter between performers was great. I should check out some of the recent episodes, it looks like the 2nd run just ended.
I assume that the show in this ranking was the US version.
It is. One person voted for the British version. It did not make the list.

Our first VCR was a BetaMAX, not a VHS. It could only record the channel it was tuned to, so, you could only watch whatever was being recorded as it was on.
Sorry if I've said it in this thread, but I mailed a VHS tape of the Lost premiere to Capella because there was no way to catch up if you missed an episode of a serial show.Just gonna point out how funny this is if you grew up nearly 100% post VHS tapes. They were VCR's, not DVR's. You would have been the Richie Rich of my neighborhood with that set-up. Even if you were successful at taping something, you had to break off the tab to make sure it wasn’t taped over. Learned that the hard way when my wife taped over Ripken breaking Gehrig’s streak. You would have been the Richie Rich of my neighborhood with that set-up. My mother desperately wanted to watch the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana but it started at 4AM local time. She promised if I would wake up and record it she would take me to Showbiz Pizza and give me five dollars to spend at the arcade.
I did and then had cheeseburger pizza while watching four animatronic gorillas sing "Happy Together" and "Louie Louie". Then I went through that five dollars in about half an hour terribly playing Berzerk and Missile Command.

I think a lot of these haven't had the same staying power. If it hasn't become something with a second life on Netflix or Hulu, I probably haven't seen it.Some of us are 30 and definitely missed some of the shows in the top 200 so far. Mr rogers, la law, 90210...all before my time.
Do a lot of people only watch stuff when it originally aired? I mean, I wasn't alive when Get Smart aired but I watched it later and put it on my list. I assume people will have stuff like I Love Lucy or The Honeymooners on there despite not being alive for them, but maybe I'm over-estimating that.
I was not alive either, but I watched a lot of Nick at Nite that had that sort of stuff when I was younger. Take Friends though. That was definitely before my time, but it was extremely heavily syndicated so I'd seen it here and there...but then it was HUGE on Netflix. Im sure I love Lucy was too, but on the "old people" channels with MASH and other stuff I'm aware of but would never watch (isn't I Love Lucy black and white?).
Something like the Office was similar - I don't think I know anyone who saw it actually air live but almost everyone I know has seen it end to end streaming.

I wonder how close I am to the line where of my 70, I saw maaaaaaybe 10 live (and that includes GoT). Maybe another 5-10 syndicated. And the other 50-ish all streaming more in a binge style.
Same. Games of Thrones. Breaking Bad. Sons of Anarchy. Peaky Blinders. Sooooo many of my favorite shows I never even watched until years after the entire series was complete. In fact, in the last decade I think Yellowstone and Lioness are the only shows I watched one episode a time as they came out. Television is just way easier now then it was in the 80s.I wonder how close I am to the line where of my 70, I saw maaaaaaybe 10 live (and that includes GoT). Maybe another 5-10 syndicated. Yeah I can't name five things off the top of my head in black and white that I've watched. I've probably seen 10 of I was guessing?I think a lot of these haven't had the same staying power. You wouldn't watch something because it's in the black-and-white? Does this apply to movies, too? I can't imagine avoiding classics for that reason.
I fall into your category on The Office - never saw a single episode during the original run but have probably seen all of them now.![]()

easy to watch and has great special effects
Yeah I mean I need to go and categorize my 70 I guess but the bulk must be in these buckets:easy to watch and has great special effects
I see the difference between our interests. No right answers, just different taste!
To be fair, it started in 2005 and ran until 2013. By the time it finished, Netflix streaming was already a thing. So I discovered it around 2010 when I went to college, then didn't have TV for the rest of its run, but always got the next season when it hit Netflix.Instinctive saying "I was too young for 90210" made me
Instinctive then essentially saying "I was too young for The Office" made me![]()
More or less. Back when I had cable you could watch things in syndication So unless I heard about it or saw it advertise I wouldn't haven't even known about it. This is a great example.Do a lot of people only watch stuff when it originally aired?

I held off on It's a Wondefful Life and Casablanca because of it. I finally decided to give it a go. They were ok but I didn't think they were top 10 or anything.
For whatever reason B/W just diminishes it for me.
I love Casablanca, but I think It’s a Wonderful Life a bit overrated. If you give another go, I’d suggest something that takes advantage of the shadows and cinematography of B&W like The Third Man, or a film noir that matches the mood like Sunset Blvd. Or one of the funniest movies of all time in Some Like It Hot.I generally don't. Breaking Bad for example, was a Netflix discovery and then the 4th and 5th season live at a friend's house every week.I’d say all but a handful of my list I watched during their original airing. A few I might have gotten a late start by a few episodes or even a season before getting caught up , but generally if it was good it was on my radar

90210 was surely a thing when it came out. The show came out and peaked during my high school years, and it was fascinating how everyone was watching it. The jocks, nerds, rockers, EVERYONE seemed to watch this.
Colin Mochrie and Ryan Stiles are my generation's version of Tim Conway and Harvey Korman.

Both of those were in reruns all the time on the 3 channels when we were young, so they're likely to make lists. By the time LA Law was in reruns, we had 60+ channels and I just can't see going back. Agreed - as one example, a big part of The Twilight Zone’s effectiveness is its black and white imagery.I don't understand the concept of not wanting to watch black and white television shows. There are some fantastic shows in black and white.
