The Top 300 Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: 50 Lists received. 67: Frasier (172 Viewers)

Real World destroyed MTV. It went from playing music videos and presenting music news with the occasionally off music show to you couldn't turn the damn channel on without a non-music show running non-stop
I do think this is The Real World’s legacy - the day the music videos died.
To be fair, i didn't say in my post it was a positive influence. I mostly agree with his rant about "reality" tv, but i loved that show at the time and i gave big points for a few shows such as Real World that were a huge part of my watching at the time.

Sanford and Son was my my #37 - My Dad was a big Red Foxx fan and we used to watch this show together and crack up.

The Punisher was my #45 - Berenthal knocked the role out of the park. Great storyline and crazy violenence

John Adams was my #56 - Giamatti is a treasure and this was such a well done minseries about the start of our Nation.

Miami Vice was culture changing. The show was shot with such a fresh new look and yes, it completely influenced 80's fashion.
Along with Sonny and Rico being fashionistas, it incorporated music into the show, and some music artists guest starred (Leonard Cohen!), but one of the biggest things that stood out to me was how in many of the episodes the bad guys got away. You didn't see many cop shows back then where the bad guys escaped, which gave it some realistic credit on how it can be really hard to bring down drug kingpins. Anyway, it was on my list, and so was Good Eats. My nephew and I would watch Good Eats, and then sometimes try to make whatever the dish was. My favorite that we made was Mac and Cheese.

I honestly think Survivor will not be happy until someone perishes during one of their seasons.
This may have been true when Mark Burnett was showrunner. But Jeff Probst is now showrunner as well as host, and more than anything he sees Survivor as an adventure show for kids. He has said so on his podcast. And it's reflected in how the post-pandemic seasons are cast, structured and presented.

Music videos as a TV concept would have died anyway when YouTube was invented.

Of course, but would have been a much longer runway. TRW just totally turned MTV on its ear seemingly overnight.

I ruined my Dad's surprise 40th birthday party because of the Dukes of Hazzard. Unbeknownst to us kids, when we went out to eat for my dad's 40th birthday, my mom had friends come over to the house to surprise him when we got home. All I cared about was getting home to watch the Dukes. So, as soon as we got home, I ran straight downstairs to turn on the TV, as the Dukes had already started. As the assembled crowd heard someone coming down into the basement, they prepared, I turned the corner into the family room, and they yelled "Surprise!" Needless to say, I almost pissed myself, and the 9 year old punk was not who they were hoping to see.

And then I couldn't even watch the episode because we had to have a party.

The Dukes were my favorite show when I was 9- or 10-ish. It was a big deal that every Friday night my sister and I got to stay up until 10, have soda and chips, and watch The Dukes from 9 until 10. I still have fond memories of that.

The show's humor was perfect for tweens as well. I didn't put it on my list because its cheesiness means it's not something I would watch today.

Same for me. Loved it when I was young but couldn't imagine it holding up. It was a pretty dumb (but fun) show.

Currently do not have HBO but would be interested in this when I cycle back into it.

I was devastated when i found out that running over a bush didn't make a car flip over.

There is a 'rubber-burnin'' Duke boys and Daisy joke here somewhere...

As a reminder, Score is the total number of points the show received.

Average Rank is the average rank the shows received across all lists it is on.
Question on the math because my ocd is kicking in and the math isn’t matching for me. For the scores, if someone ranks a show #70 that is 1 point, #69 is 2 points, up to #1 for 70 points, right?

Got to be off most people's radar because this show is great. One of the best final episodes to a season i've seen in a while too

I wonder about The Pacific's low ranking, given that we're likely to see its predecessor very highly rated. Did people watch it but not care for it, or just never watched it at all?

Agree, I had The Pacific at #31. So well done. I'm thinking most rankers never saw it.
I had Pacific in my top 70, but nowhere close to BoB. I also really liked the 3rd show in the Tom Hanks/Stephen Spielberg WWII trilogy, and I had it in my top 70 too. I wonder if it will show in the rankings, but it's probably too new...

The Real World #26 @guru_007 is underestimating the impact of this one. This was a core part of my college and MTV watching, which where I put 5 shows that were essential watches for me around then. This is also admitting that I haven't seen more than 1/2 the seasons. I was a little late to the OG, so I hopped on with LA and jumped off after New Orleans. Our favorite was probably London (Jacinda!) and of course SF with Pedro and Puck. Good memories here.
Real World destroyed MTV. It went from playing music videos and presenting music news with the occasionally off music show to you couldn't turn the damn channel on without a non-music show running non-stop. I watched the entire SF season, not by choice, but rather my roommates at the time had MTV on non-stop in the living area, so when I was in there with them, it would be on. That's all these ****ers talked about, Puck did this or Jud and that girl did that, and blah blah blah blah blah.
I'm not judging people that liked this show (yes I am), I just despised it and cannot stand reality television at all. My wife watches Survivor (SPOILER ALERT) and big brother and it's the same damn thing over and over and over again. I honestly think Survivor will not be happy until someone perishes during one of their seasons.
/rant
Nothing personal KarmaPolice. I didn't submit a list for this because a) I hardly have watched any tv series over the past 20 years and b) don't like certain genres of television at all. I appreciate you all who did, and I'm just here to make a comment from time to time :)
I was thinking a little more on this, and will say that at the time I personally didn't care as much about the music stuff on MTV. Around this time we were already making runs the stores to buy a ton of music. To me MTV was too much like the radio and mostly played hits over and over. Great when I was in MS since that was my outlet to some stuff like metal and alternative, but by that time I don't remember watching videos much. To me Real World was just a fun show that was popular that I watched with friends. Now I might have a different stance because of what Real World unleashed on us, but I also think reality tv was inevitable without that show, and people were getting farther away from radio and MTV in general as we had more and more access to music IRL.

Way to start off with a bang. I absolutely whiffed on this. It should have been on my list but completely escaped me.

Excellent pick, you four!

Shame. No VCR?

Those car chases hold up and the midair freeze frame Waylon Jennings voiceover does too imo.

My thoughts too. I won the bath time slot - I got to watch Dukes while my brother had his bath, then he got to watch Chips while I had my bath. Dukes > Chips

We were supposed to be home already, but the service at the Ground Round was slow that night.

My list took a bit a a blow, but it makes more sense that many of mine would get knocked out in the 1st 100 than I would stay near the top of the pack with shows left in the 200. Comments with some @s because a couple of these I've recommended a lot. (my rank is listed)

NOVA - #11 Not many shows made great science stories so accessible. Such a quality show that I'd want access to on my island.
After Life #48- @steelerfan1 and somebody else sang it's praises. In movies and shows I place a high value on things that can make me laugh and cry in one episode. I complain about Netflix a lot, but this and another show that I don't think we have seen are the 2 that I recommend to people a lot. Of course a bit might depend on how grating you find Gervais.
Dallas #33 - Just one that stood out from childhood that my parents weirdly let us stay up to watch.
The Real World #26 @guru_007 is underestimating the impact of this one. This was a core part of my college and MTV watching, which where I put 5 shows that were essential watches for me around then. Our favorite was probably London (Jacinda!) and of course SF with Pedro and Puck. Good memories here.
Bates Motel #49 I will echo fellow MADer @simey here. This was one of my bigger surprises when I was heavier into TV in the 2010s. The leads of Fermiga and Highmore were great and they did a good job with the atmosphere and creep factor. A well done show that did the movie/book and characters justice. It also didn't overstay it's welcome at 5 seasons. Another I recommended a lot in the video store days.

Cobra Kai #42 I freakin' LOVED the first couple seasons. Yes, I get what some of you are saying that is was always a bit corny. But it was that in the way that the first movie was - it was corny, but also well made, funny, and I thought they hit a HR by flipping it a bit and having us have some sympathy for Johnny. Problem is that lasted about 3 seasons then the inevitable happened and they started to trot out the side characters and villains from the movies with diminishing returns. To me it got too much to keep watching. Even Kreese I found cringeworthy and that was pretty early in the seasons. I haven't bothered with S5+ yet.
Bates Motel is fantastic and one I for some reason forgot about. And I don’t know how because my wife and I have watched it 3 times.

So good. Just an almost perfect show.
with you being the horror guy i thought for sure you were going to be 1 of the votes.
Blows my freaking mind I omitted that……like WTF.

Sooooo goooood.

I enjoyed Bates Motel but it didn't sniff my top 70. I can't really put my finger on what I disliked about it. Great performances from the two leads.

Loved the Duke Boys as a kid - never crossed my mind. No idea if they would have made my list or not if I remembered.

I also remember my parents driving me around from McDonald's to McDonald's trying to find one that had the General Lee happy meal car because I had all of the others.
