We're all 50, not 70 - do people go back and watch old network dramas from the 80s or were you people watching boring stuff in junior high?
It was hard to watch everything you wanted to back then - DVRs would basically only record what were actually watching at the time. So a lot of shows went by that I didn’t watch - a few of them I have gone back to over the years.
They were VCR's, not DVR's. But are you sure about the bolded? It seems to me there was a "TV/VCR" button that would allow you to record with the VCR while watching another channel on the TV, as long as the VCR was "cable ready".

I heard about this show so checked it out. Changed it after 5 minutes and never went back because all the "Romans" had British accents. I may reconsider if MAX ever makes a Victorian drama where the actors all have Italian (or Jersey) accents.
You wanted them to speak Latin?
Speaking in English is one thing, making them British is a bridge too far
Well it was a co-production with BBC and was filmed entirely in Italy so it made more sense to cast British actors than American actors.

Just gonna point out how funny this is if you grew up nearly 100% post VHS tapes.

Yes I meant VCR. Later versions could record something else but for awhile I had one in which you couldn’t change the channel or the taping got effed up.

I’m still waiting for laser discs to take over.

Whose Line was brilliant when Drew Carey was host. The banter between performers was great. I should check out some of the recent episodes, it looks like the 2nd run just ended.
You should check out the British version. I thought that was better and how I first stumbled upon it. Had many of the same players but the host didn't try as hard as Drew Carey and I thought he was better (not that Drew was bad).

I assume that the show in this ranking was the US version.

It is. One person voted for the British version. It did not make the list.

I had it all the way up at #20. Top 5 comedy for me. I couldn't vote for the American version because the fall off post Carey was extreme for me. Also the guys got old. Young, in the British version, holy smokes that show made me laugh.

Our first VCR was a BetaMAX, not a VHS. It could only record the channel it was tuned to, so, you could only watch whatever was being recorded as it was on.

Sorry if I've said it in this thread, but I mailed a VHS tape of the Lost premiere to Capella because there was no way to catch up if you missed an episode of a serial show.

You would have been the Richie Rich of my neighborhood with that set-up. Our first family VCR was not programmable, instead someone (usually me) had to manually press the red "Record" and "Play" buttons simultaneously.

My mother desperately wanted to watch the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana but it started at 4AM local time. She promised if I would wake up and record it she would take me to Showbiz Pizza and give me five dollars to spend at the arcade.

I did and then had cheeseburger pizza while watching four animatronic gorillas sing "Happy Together" and "Louie Louie". Then I went through that five dollars in about half an hour terribly playing Berzerk and Missile Command.

Even if you were successful at taping something, you had to break off the tab to make sure it wasn’t taped over. Learned that the hard way when my wife taped over Ripken breaking Gehrig’s streak. :sadbanana:

Some of us are 30 and definitely missed some of the shows in the top 200 so far. Mr rogers, la law, 90210...all before my time.

Do a lot of people only watch stuff when it originally aired? I mean, I wasn't alive when Get Smart aired but I watched it later and put it on my list. I assume people will have stuff like I Love Lucy or The Honeymooners on there despite not being alive for them, but maybe I'm over-estimating that.

I think a lot of these haven't had the same staying power. If it hasn't become something with a second life on Netflix or Hulu, I probably haven't seen it.

Take Friends though. That was definitely before my time, but it was extremely heavily syndicated so I'd seen it here and there...but then it was HUGE on Netflix. Im sure I love Lucy was too, but on the "old people" channels with MASH and other stuff I'm aware of but would never watch (isn't I Love Lucy black and white?).

Something like the Office was similar - I don't think I know anyone who saw it actually air live but almost everyone I know has seen it end to end streaming.

I was not alive either, but I watched a lot of Nick at Nite that had that sort of stuff when I was younger. Instinctive sounds young enough to be after Nick at Nite stopped airing classic TV shows.

I wonder how close I am to the line where of my 70, I saw maaaaaaybe 10 live (and that includes GoT). Maybe another 5-10 syndicated. And the other 50-ish all streaming more in a binge style.

You wouldn't watch something because it's in the black-and-white? Does this apply to movies, too? I can't imagine avoiding classics for that reason.

I fall into your category on The Office - never saw a single episode during the original run but have probably seen all of them now. :bag:

That's an interesting question. I'm curious to look at my list and see where I fall on these. A lot of mine are binges, too, since I mostly didn't go for the nostalgia votes.

Same. Games of Thrones. Breaking Bad. Sons of Anarchy. Peaky Blinders. Sooooo many of my favorite shows I never even watched until years after the entire series was complete. In fact, in the last decade I think Yellowstone and Lioness are the only shows I watched one episode a time as they came out. Television is just way easier now then it was in the 80s.

Yeah I can't name five things off the top of my head in black and white that I've watched. I've probably seen 10 of I was guessing?

Top of my head:
Miracle on 34th
It's a wonderful life
Casablanca

I can't think of anything else. I've never claimed to be a connoisseur per se but I've also never felt a push to watch something just because it's old and was considered good. Plenty of good stuff that's also easy to watch and has great special effects and dialogue and such.

easy to watch and has great special effects

I see the difference between our interests. No right answers, just different taste!
Yeah I mean I need to go and categorize my 70 I guess but the bulk must be in these buckets:

1. Comedy / sitcom
2. Procedural with law or law enforcement
3. Dad action (generally speaking has spies or military, a mystery, a good guy who wins, etc)
4. Competition (I guess this is reality but a very specific subset)
5. Fantasy (incl stuff like Star wars and superheroes in this bucket)

Instinctive saying "I was too young for 90210" made me

Instinctive then essentially saying "I was too young for The Office" made me :oldunsure:🧓
To be fair, it started in 2005 and ran until 2013. By the time it finished, Netflix streaming was already a thing. So I discovered it around 2010 when I went to college, then didn't have TV for the rest of its run, but always got the next season when it hit Netflix.

That's kind of what I mean by "on the edge" of a total shift in how we consume TV. I definitely remember coming home from school and watching Around the Horn, PTI, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Friends back to back before dinner like every weekday.

But even then, we DVR'd stuff as a family. I basically never have seen Survivor live, even though I've watched nearly every season.

Never seen OITNB.

Mr. Rogers hood is a good one that if we were actually trying to debate the best shows of all time then it should likely be in the running but not this low.

Haven't seen Veronica Mars but I will,

Whose Line is great, why I voted for it but I like the older episodes better.

Don't think I was the target demographic for Beverly Hills and never seen it.

WHAT. THE. ABSOLUTE. ****. IS. A. VCR?!?

Canada has tv shows?

I would estimate that 2/3's of my list are shows I watched after they were originally aired. A lot of shows were streamed and yes, I watched a lot of Nick at Night when it was classics.

You wouldn't watch something because it's in the black-and-white? Does this apply to movies, too?
I generally don't. It does diminish it for me but I am not sure why.

I held off on It's a Wondefful Life and Casablanca because of it. I finally decided to give it a go. They were ok but I didn't think they were top 10 or anything.

For whatever reason B/W just diminishes it for me.

I’d say all but a handful of my list I watched during their original airing. A few I might have gotten a late start by a few episodes or even a season before getting caught up , but generally if it was good it was on my radar

I love Casablanca, but I think It’s a Wonderful Life a bit overrated. If you give another go, I’d suggest something that takes advantage of the shadows and cinematography of B&W like The Third Man, or a film noir that matches the mood like Sunset Blvd. Or one of the funniest movies of all time in Some Like It Hot.

Breaking Bad for example, was a Netflix discovery and then the 4th and 5th season live at a friend's house every week.

No - That was color.

90210 was surely a thing when it came out. The show came out and peaked during my high school years, and it was fascinating how everyone was watching it. The jocks, nerds, rockers, EVERYONE seemed to watch this.

Same. I had forgotten about it, may have included it for nostalgia's sake. In college it was one of those watch party shows.

TV shows - I have watched many after the original airing but they tend to age worse than movies (IMO). The older they get, the less likely I am going to be interested in checking them out. I mentioned Homicide:Life on the Streets earlier. I tried this one recently because Peacock started streaming it and I heard great things, like Andre Braugher, etc. but I eventually lost interest. I’m sure it was groundbreaking when it came out so I appreciate it for that, but I’m good without seeing it.

Movies - I’ll watch old ones. Some of my top ten or so movies are from before I was born or right around it (12 Angry Men, Dr. Strangelove, Network). I think it’s just a different art form that can forget about trying to be relevant to a time and place on a weekly basis, I don’t know.

This whole idea sounds pretty half-baked.

Showbiz Pizza, there you go! Before they got bought by Chuck E Cheese which stole their jingle and changed the words.

Both of those were in reruns all the time on the 3 channels when we were young, so they're likely to make lists. By the time LA Law was in reruns, we had 60+ channels and I just can't see going back. I guess others do, though - I seem to be the odd one.

I heard about this show so checked it out. Changed it after 5 minutes and never went back because all the "Romans" had British accents. I may reconsider if MAX ever makes a Victorian drama where the actors all have Italian (or Jersey) accents.
You'd rather they sounded like Carroll O'Connor? He rocked as Casca in Cleopatra.

Didn't like Rome at all. Look! It's a shocking scene! Look! Here comes another!

No, thanks.
