Essential viewing. The late night chat landscape is crowded now, but this was the only outlet that mattered until Letterman came along. And Carson was a great interviewer -- he disarmed people with his Nebraska aw-shucks-ness and got them to say things they normally wouldn't.

I liked The Shield at first, but the whole shaky camera thing made me distracted and nauseous so I stopped watching. I might try to give it another chance some time.

How many standup comics made it just by being on that show? 50? 100?

Chiklis was off the charts great in this, at least IMO.
He is an overall great actor. He played Curly in a TV movie about "The Three Stooges". His performance showed such depth that you saw Jerome Horwitz underneath the character.

That awful John Belushi movie almost derailed Chiklis' career. He deserved a comeback. Before "The Shield" he was on an ABC show called "The Commish". It was a typical 90's cop drama, but he made it stand out.

Fleabag was phenomenal, but come on. It's just 12 episodes in total. I wouldn't have ranked this on my top 100 just due to the sample size.
There's another British comedy series that's just 12 episodes in total that is sure to be higher on this list.

I can't narrow this down to a specific one, but I think I know what you're thinking of (and it was on my list)

Edit - scratch that, was confusing that with another one from a similar era which has a LOT more episodes than I thought

Interested in opinions on going back and watching something like this so far removed from when it aired.. I have seen a few clips but never seen a full show because it was before my time (I was technically alive toward the end of its run, but too young to watch).

I watch a lot of old shows (you have already seen Andy Griffith was near the top of my list, and I ranked a few older shows that I'm sure are still to come). But watching an old talk show seems different than a sitcom. I feel like a larger percentage of the content would be related to the events of that time, and it might be harder to appreciate.

There were a lot of skits mixed in with the celebrity interviews(Johnny and Betty White as Tarzan and Jane for example). You might enjoy it also, as it has a lot of tv and movie stars being interviewed about the show they were currently on. Like Rockford Files? See James Gardner being interviewed about the show.

I assumed I'd have this on my list, but it fell out of the top 70. Honestly, though - it felt like he spent 75% of each monologue trying to bomb so he could make jokes about bombing.

I can't imagine watching old Carson - watch a few clips on YouTube and move on.

You can have Betty, I'll take Teresa Ganzel and Carol Wayne please.
Second appearance by her so far in this countdown - Greedy Gretchen from Three’s Company being the first.

I always wanted Greedy Gretchen to be my band name.

Even I'm not old enough to confirm but there are some who say the Tonight Show was never the same after Carson moved the show from New York to beautiful Downtown Burbank in 1972.

Fleabag. Never even heard of this. This is the primary reason scour these threads. Cued up. Mahalo

Late Show with Johnny. Nothing but great memories from that show. Wasn't the consistent regular watcher, but a couple of times a week from sure. Johnny died 25 years ago? 25? Damn.
Um...20?

The King of late night. I only put one late night talk host on my list though(No, I wasn't the guy that put Fallon). I'm having second thoughts about that questionable decision.
Jimmy Fallon was me. I love that guy….he kills me.

But as you can see from my ranking Johnny is the King.

Really enjoyable show with funny characters. I do think it lost a bit when Luke got older, but always sharp writing IMO. Lily was the typical annoying Cousin Oliver type that could have derailed the show, but there was more than enough to compensate.

I'm really surprised to see this already. Would have guessed top 50 and ranked by almost everyone. It's generally excellent, but also it aired on a major network in prime time while everyone on the board was alive, it's been heavily syndicated, and it's easily available on streaming platforms. I figured it would be the #2 or #3 sitcom of the entire list, after the US version of the Office (which hasn't come up yet I think) and BBT (which also I think hasn't come up yet).

Modern Family was on my Top 100 or so. Was really funny for a long time, definitely lost steam
and I eventually abandoned it. I’ll still watch the occasional show if I’m just flipping around but I don’t seek it out.

I've seen Brooklyn Nine-Nine a few times. Was good for a few chuckles, but never good enough that I wanted to watch it regularly. Wouldn't have made my list.
I have never seen an episode of Modern Family.
I'm not a tv snob by any means. I mean I haven't been a regular tv viewer for 20 years other than sports and streaming series, sure. But I mean, I'll watch two and a half men when bored because that show is funny to me. I would have guessed that Modern Family would have ranked in the top 100 sitcoms, but not top 100 shows.

Lily was on since the beginning- they had to make her grow up.

Modern Family is a lot funnier than Two and a Half Men (which was the same jokes over and over).

True - she was too young to have any lines for the first few seasons. I think they tried to make her too much a part of the ensemble as she grew up, but as mentioned, it was a big cast that helped to mitigate the damage.

Loved Two and a Half Men growing up. When they kicked Sheen off it took a cliff dive in quality for me.

Modern Family actually has a similar sense of humor in many ways - the characters have a lot more depth though. Two and a Half Mens characters were always a little 2D to me, caricature-y.

So it's one I considered but didn't make the final 70.
