I keep hearing this and I'm sure it will become clearer to me. Book 1 just seems to be what every other science/fantasy book is, set in a world with multiple races that are coming together against a dark force. It's a definite slog, but I enjoyed them. I saw a note on IMDB that the books had 2,782 named characters.
I thought some of the books dragged, and sometimes I wondered if I wanted to finish reading them. But, if you are going to create a universe of that size, there's a lot of detail to fill in.
As I understand it, Jordan started out trying to do a Trilogy but that plan didn’t last long. As a result, the first book has the typical pace you would expect and has a very LoTR feel to it about group going on a quest. The scope and the story greatly expand after that first book.I keep hearing this and I'm sure it will become clearer to me. Nice! The Great Hunt chapter 8 is one of my favorite in the series. Peak LanI think we need a 3rd thread - people who are going through the books, but are early in the stages. Don't need for know-it-alls like @The Gator spoiling things for us!!![]()
Btw, Gator, I have slowly started listening to Book 2 again. I had to go back a bit to refresh, so I am almost back to where I was![]()
I am guessing that's the chapter with Lan's coaching for the big meeting? Funny stuff.Nice! The Great Hunt chapter 8 is one of my favorite in the series. Peak Lan#sheephearder
What we need is to get spoiler tags back.I think we need a 3rd thread
This is not, not true.I keep hearing this and I'm sure it will become clearer to me. Book 1 just seems to be what every other science/fantasy book is, set in a world with multiple races that are coming together against a dark force.
It's a fun series, imo. First book is one of my favorites ever.
Can't speak for anyone else, but as an avid book reader, I'm perfectly fine kinda watching this thread progress through the books and chiming in with book appropriate content while trying to avoid specific spoilers of later books. I already don't know where to post thoughts. Honestly most of my thoughts now are about differences in the show and how I'm surprised after 6 episodes they seem to be ahead of where I am in book two on some things, and wondering if they actually are or if it's just TV stuff. I guess I will find out in time. Can't speak for anyone else, but as an avid book reader, I'm perfectly fine kinda watching this thread progress through the books and chiming in with book appropriate content while trying to avoid specific spoilers of later books. FWIW, first 9 books where out when I started the series and I re-read them for each new book except maybe once or twice. Plus I did a full re-read last year waiting for the TV show. So put it at 6 - 7 re-reads for the first 9 books and tapering down from there? Probably a minimum of 3 times through all but the last book. However, I really enjoy hearing the journey, thoughts and theories from new readers along the way.![]()
The show is pulling stuff alluded to in later books in to start with a big, broad world, with a hint at some of the political machinations (at least at the White Tower for now). It's telling the same story, but not just from the viewpoint of the country farmboy like the first book tends to do. I'll leave it at that to try to keep this mostly spoiler-free, but you're not wrong. There are pieces or plot lines from later books being at least teased at or setup now.I already don't know where to post thoughts. Again, no need to answer for spoilers, but things that stood out from the show so far:The show is pulling stuff alluded to in later books in to start with a big, broad world, with a hint at some of the political machinations (at least at the White Tower for now). Agreed - it is a fun series! I liked 1 but like 2 & 3 better and while it's almost a different type of story, 4-6 were really enjoyable also. Plus, I'm a big Sanderson fan (actually introduced to him when I found out he was finishing the WoT though) so I do like 11 to the end.
edit to add: those are the better books in the series. I have new appreciation for the middle "slog" books on further re-reads. Not to the level of the others, but I don't skip them either.
3. Moraine getting tossed from Tar Valon (I noticed in the wording she is out .... unless the Amyrlin Seat summons her?)
I forgot about that book. I think a pod I was listening to suggested reading that one before the series started. It's more of a prequel, right? Guessing from their conversation in the last chapter I got through - also a bit of Lan/Moraine backstory?iirc, this is swiped from New Spring. If you want more info on it I'll reply again. Didn't want to say too much if you were going to read that book too.

I can’t intersect books & series in the other thread but my biggest issue with the Amazon series is the disjointed timeline they are following compared to the books. They are covering mostly the same major plot lines but their story line is jumbled. Couldn’t they have got to the same point in the story by following the path laid out in the books?
I really hate they went to Tar Valon. I feel like I've talked too much about it for two weeks now, so I'll stop. They could've just gone to Whitebridge instead of Camelyn if they were avoiding Elayne complications.I don't think so, not really - the first book as written would be fairly boring and tropey TV. Farmboy goes on quest to save the world. I think trying to pull in some of the machinations from later books earlier on, so we see a full world, not just the world as seen by a villager. That doesn't mean they needed to do / pull everything in, but they are really trying to setup the full breadth of the world early on, with a slightly more complex storyline. There are definitely things I would have done differently (I felt like they could have kept the dragon possibilities to the 3 boys, and either Egwene goes with because Moiraine senses she can channel (which, side note, doesn't seem to be a thing in the show maybe?) or has a few lines about wanting to see the world to give her motive for following them out. And there was a lot of world building around the Aes Sedai and the warder bond that I'm not sure really had to be accelerated into this season, but I don't hate it either. But that would mean they could have stopped in Caemlyn instead of going to Tar Valon, for instance (even if they don't introduce any royals so they don't need the actors this season).
Anyways, long winded way of saying, I think a lot of changes were to be expected. Different directions than I personally would have gone in some places, but not something I hate. Just different.
About halfway for me but I ordered 3-5 so I'm committed for a while.Almost done with book 2!
I have mixed feelings, but overall still positive. Damane chapter is messed up.
Ok - let's do this!About halfway for me but I ordered 3-5 so I'm committed for a while.
Channeling to open the way gate is an issue too. Loial was standing right there, and that's one of his things.
