The year of the TE (1 Viewer)

Keller

Watson

Heap

Royal

Celek

Shockey

Winslow

Davis

Carlson

all had awesome games. Some were preseason sleepers, some came out of nowhere. Add that to the usual studs like Gonzo, Witten, gates, etc and this looks like a yr filled with top TEs.

Whos for real, whos not?

Carlson should be top 5 this year.
I dunno the way I see it Gonzo, Clark, Gates, and Witten are so damn good that only leaves one slot to be top 5. Not saying he cant do it but Im not ready to annoint him yet.
Gates won't make it in top 5 this year.
Ummmm, why? And please don't say "gut feeling".
Two reasons.1) I think Bolts will run much more this year.2) I think VJax is the number 1 target now. Gates no longer the first look. These two things combined will drop him down out of top 5. Probably #7 or 8 this year IMO.Hope this was enough.

Carlson..........4 REAL
Carlson looked good and I have him in a couple leagues, but come on, the Rams are notorious for letting TE's have big days. The jury is still out for a couple more weeks on most of these guys.
I believe it will only take one week. Seattle has to travel to SF next week. The 49ers have a MUCH better defense than the Rams. Its early in the season, but this is already a very important game to both Seattle and SF. One of them will start the season 2-0 and have the NFC West lead to themselves. We should have a much better idea of where Carlson fits in Seattle's plans. I believe this game will have the feel of a playoff game. Both teams have a lot to prove and a lot to win/lose.

Every one of Gates' years from 2004-2008 have been in the top 20 for ALL TEs for ALL seasons over that span (if I used the DD correctly, lol). That's just crazy production. He's also had the top 2 seasons in that span, assuming standard scoring I think. Looks like 4 of the 5 of his years are top 10, too. Look at Tony G, too, crazy.Last year he was 20th, but that was over the last 5 seasons, so still great.

Check Carlson's game log for last year. Jury is in. Carlson is for real and now a healthy Hoss makes him even better.
I do like Carlson. However, I'm not sure you can count last year's targets as a means of predicting success this year strictly due to the WR situation in '08.

It's more than enough. After all, those are valid observations. In Gates defense here are a few reasons he will finish at 4 or higher.1) Norv Turner leans on TE's more than almost anyone in the league. Always has, always will. Dont expect him to change at this stage of his career.2) Sure, every coach wants to run effectively. But situations often dictate choices. "I think Bolts will run much more this year" is not much different than " I got a gut feeling". 3) Vjax was the #1 target last year as Gates played thru a painful Toe injury. Gates had to really study the playbook to become a factor at all last year and preseason many are raving about how much of the field he can see this year. Makes a real difference when a player makes that type of leap to really understand how it all fits, Instead of relying on his athletic ability.4) Gates committed himself to an offseason workout regimen to really get in great playing shape. Once again, on the realization that his opportunity in years is short. His teammates now say Antonio is "chiseled".These are not the hallmarks of a guy about to lose points. If anything they point to a guy who could get a big uptick. These are my valid observations.

I thought Shockey looked great in week 1 and in the preseason as well. They guy looks faster than ever. I still worry he won't stay healthy, but if he does I think he's got a good chance to return to stud status.

Thanks for those.1) I question this comment. If we look at total TE targets by team this would probably shake out as maybe 5 - 10 range, but not top 5 in team TE targets.2) I have a "gut feeling" you're just being petty here.3) "preseason people are raving" Please everyone is in the best shape ever and is ready for their best year in preseason. This is nothing more than coachspeak and hearsay.4) I wasn't aware that the guy who spent the most time in the weight room was the best player. I guess David Boston was better than I thought. In any case, many times a change in body makeup is a detriment to a gifted player as their natural abilities are negated by the change in flexibility or other traits.

What about the rook from Buffalo and Royal in Cleveland? Both had lots of targets...

And of course there is Jared Cook with the potential of Scaife being out for a while...

Rookie TEs generally have very little upside, Jeremy Shockey notwithstanding. Even quality TEs like Witten and Daniels have put up mediocre production as a rookie. Nelson's a guy that the Bills seem to love. He'll probably be high on my radar next year... but this year I think there are too many better options.

How would you rank Royal vs Watson?
Watson's a total mirage. Don't buy in. I'm going to be surprised if he's top 20 from this point forward.

I think Miller could be legit. Had lots of yards and catches last year, only was missing the td's. With Oakland running it all day and DHB dropping passes everywhere, he could have a very solid season.

Really though Keller looks like the most likely of these folk to finish in the top five.

I have my doubts that Royal is a top tier NFL Te (in fact Im pretty sure he isnt), BUT Considering Cleveland has no Wr2, their starting Rb is not pass catcher, their Wr1 isnt either  , and Te production has been a mainstay in the Cleveland offense, Wouldnt surprise me at all if Royal put up serviceable numbers for the year (especially for a starting TE you can get off the waiver wire)

A lot of depth....play the hot hand....so many good TE's available on the WW

Picked up Shockey to play him vs. DET, this week Winslow....who I picked up on the WW right after the draft!

Heap, Miller, Celek, amd Watson out there still......

Not to much love for Shocks huh?

Is this actually true or just a gut-feeling? I know Gates was injured last year, so naturally he wouldn't have been targeted as much. Last night though, they each had 5 receptions - Gates for 83yds, VJax for 56yds... I can't find total targets from the game yet, but the final stats don't support the "Gates as target #2" theory at least.

I like Shockey but there are so many options in that offense that he will have great weeks like this one but he will also have weeks where he only catches one or two.

What about the other Miller - Heath? Good 1st game and lots of targets. Seems like he is healthy and back to his role as the 3d receiving option for Pitt.

I'd look at the folk who got lots of targets...Olsen didn't get much lovin'.
Beg to differ on this one. Olsen was targeted 6 times but was double covered the whole came. It's a little early for this band wagoning don't you think to?

Have Heap as a backup to Carlson in a league. Want to deal Heap once Carlson gets past his bye week.

Looks like Chris Baker got over hyped and that Ben Watson could be the main TE for the Pats.
