There are more slaves today than 4 centuries of trans-atlantic slave trading (1 Viewer)

I have a handful of people that do work for me. Not employees. More like contractors. A couple of them have been with me for years because I take care of them very well, but I am by no means their chief source of income. I tend to pay more than what they ask me to pay them, because I want to make sure they feel appreciated and want to stay with me for a very long time. I've been extremely blessed to have them and their skill sets in my life as it has helped me start a second career, a side hustle if you will that is rapidly becoming my main hustle.

Still, to feel that the current socio-economic system we have is worse than slaver of the 1800's and yet the only thing you do is take care of one employ and preach to a bunch of dolts on a football message board seems a bit off. That's a massive injustice by your words. Seems like you should be doing more.
I might get the chance to do more pretty soon. The company that did the initial franchising for Five Guys and QDoba has sent us a contract to review. If we sign it they will be requied to sell at least 10 franchises per year for the next 10 years. If they don't, they're in default of the contract. Granted, most franchisors don't have minimum wage jobs, but we can influence the the franchisees to pay their employees who need a liveable wage a liveable wage. Lots of things have to happen first though. For now, I'm doing what I can do, despite your misdirected outrage.

Is this the thread where we throw out dumb comparisons?

College athletes should get paid.....it is practically slavery!

On topic: I was surprised by the number, you would figure every government in the world would be strictly opposed to slavery and committed to stamping it out.
Nearly every country has laws on the books regarding human trafficking.   Enforcement is an entirely different issue, particularly in India and China, which account for over a third of the world's population.

I'm not outraged at all. I don't really care. I stopped worrying about national politics and matters of this magnitude a long time ago. I've only got time to worry about me and mine. One day, as the side gig keeps growing, maybe I will be able to worry about such things and make an impact. But right now I can't. I'm also not the one saying companies that don't pay more are the same or worse as slave owners of the 1800's. If I were outraged, trust me, you would know it.

It needs to be said over and over and over again, until those who are in denial of it finally realize it. Just because the majority of the country is in denial of it doesn't mean they are right. In 2004 the majority of the country was in denial about homosexuality. Public sentiment eventually gets it right, and paying some one less than they need to live is morally wrong. I admit comparing it to slavery is hyperbole, but after 150 years of still failling to fix the problem, we need to wake up, especially if we're going to discuss fixing problems in other countries that we've have not fully fixed yet ourselves. Really, what's going to happen to those 27 million after we fight a war to free them? What will 150 years later look like to them?
