There Will Be Blood - NEW FILM (1 Viewer)

This movie was the nards...as expected. It just felt real. The last 10 minutes was some of the best film I have ever seen. I was as equally excited to see this as I was No Country For Old Men. There Will Be Blood was superior.

I'd say Before the Devil Knows You're Dead was better than No Country for Old Men. The collaborative of acting was better than both as far as making you feel what the actors were going through.
That was an excruciating movie to watch but great as well. I have a hard time rating it as high as NCfOM because it wasn't a very enjoyable experience.

It served its purpose. Right up there with Requiem for a Dream.

heard an interview with Paul Dano on NPR today.

really tempered my enthusiasm for the movie. he's a doosh and he only had 3 days to prep for his role. meaning, to me, that he isn't going to be anywhere near the intensity of Day-Lewis. his acting in the previews seemed a little wooden to me.. and excerpts that were played on NPR today seemed to reinforce that.

he just didn't come off well from what i heard.

My favorite movie since American Beauty, though City of God is right up there as well.
One of the best movies ever made.

Don't know much about his dooshiness but he played his role well in the movie. Didn't even connect the dots as to who he was when I watched it.

Dano played his role well. He could have prepped his whole life and he wouldn't match the intensity of Daniel Day-Lewis. You might just want to see the movie.

DDL is probably the best actor in the business right now, reminds me a lot a young DeNiro (I meant DeNiro when he was young).

 Hard to come up with a better living actor.
:excited: Without a doubt the best actor in the business right now.

magnolia was crap...earnest heavy handed...how about that scene where it pushes into the calendar and it reads, "It really did happen."hard 8 was greatboogie nights awesomepunch drunk love good toobut magnolia was so contrived it was like oliver stone film
:kicksrock: Magnolia is one of the worst movies ever.2 hours of unlikeable losers would have been bad, but 3 hours was excrutiating. The "One is the loneliest number" voiceover at the beginning, was so bad, I almost turned it off at that point. And I'm sorry I didn't.

DDL is great as usual, but I was bored by this movie. I guess I just didn't get it.

It's well-acted. It's a story. But I don't know what makes this particular story all that compelling.

It's one of those Love It or Hate It films.Fans think it's great. Others think it's miserable garbage. :lmao:

Certainly. I think I really respect an artist that takes risks. I would never claim that Magnolia is a movie everyone should like. For me I just love directors like David Lynch and Francis Coppola because they make movies without regard to safety and normalcy. So I suppose Magnolia works for me on that level.

Saw it, thought it was great. Not the life-changing revelatory experience it's been made out to be in the reviews, but worthy of Best Picture and Actor noms for sure.

saw it and I thought it was incredible. Thought Daniel day lewis was incredible also. Awesome film. Awesome score. Best film ive seen in some time. The ending makes you feel uncomfortable and really makes you feel.

Kind of a polarizing film for me. On one hand, great score, great acting, great story, great dialogue etc.

On the other hand, very dark and not too many likable characters.

In terms of its artistry it's a 10, but in terms of its entertainment value I'd give it an 8 as I'm just not real big on movies with this dark of a tone...personal preference I suppose.

Another stunning performance by DDL, although the character was a bit too similar to his role in Gangs of New York.

Looking forward to watching it again.

Yea baby. This was awesome. Scenery was worth the price of admission alone. Then the score, DDL, etc. I loved it.

Saw this yesterday. I've been saying it for a while, Daniel Day Lewis is one of the best actors of our generation and did nothing but bolster his resume with There Will Be Blood. Perfect combination of mania and ruthlesness. The scene at the end with Eli in the bowling alley was lights out, one of the most powerful I can remember.

"I drink your milkshake! I drink it up!"

Excellent movie, I saw this yesterday and i was completely taken in by DDL's performance. I agree that the last scene was one of the best in the movie and I thought the score fit perfectly, it added a whole new dimension to this film. Only thing that confused me was the Sunday brothers thing, twins?

"Im finished!"

If I understand what you are asking , then yes they were twins. The ending was powerful and perfect.

Entertaining movie for a movie-buff but not great. Average movie-goer probably wouldn't like it because they aren't dying to like it like most in this thread and the critics.

Give me a break people.

I give PTA credit for creating a movie that took me back to a time and place that was amazing to behold. But the overall storytelling was not great. Barely entertaining.

Paul Dano- Terrible. This kid was klitsy for christ's sake. His first sermon where he takes the demons out of the old ladies' hands was so weak. "If I still have teeth I'll bite you demons, if I lose my teeth I'll gum you." It went something like that. Terrible. How do you cast Dano to play opposite of DDL? Dano is suppossed to be his arch rival? It didn't work. Why didn't Dano try to prevent DDL from building the pipeline in the first place? Dano had the landowners in the palm of his hand. DDL had no challenges in this movie thus there was nothing to root for.

DDL- Thought he was terrific for most of the film but he turned into a cartoon by the end. The bowling alley scene at the end was way over the top. Plus I didn't buy the way his relationship turned out with his son. When the oil rig caught on fire his first concern was the safety of his kid. He didn't abandon the kid so much as sent him to get the help he needed IMO. I guess you could say he was so maniacal by the end that it wasn't out of character for him to end his relationship with his son. But I don't buy it. It was out of character with the way he treated the kid the whole film. His eagerness to accept that imposter as his brother shows again his soft spot for family. Oh yeah he thought they had the same blood. Please.

The cinematography and score were amazing but that's not enough for me to call this movie great. It's a portait of a manicial prospector who doesn't really have any challenges to overcome. His main rival, if you can even call Dano that, is a fool and you aren't really left with anyone to root nor care for. But hey its PTA and DDL and they can't do wrong.

I'm kind of torn on this film. On one hand, the first 3/4 of the film was brilliant in my opinion.

It was just awesome to see Plainview evolve in the beginning, suffer through the hardships, and what he had to go through that turned him into such a ruthless, miserable person. Scenery is amazing and definitely deserves to be seen on the big screen. Daniel Day Lewis is awesome, like everyone says.

The bowling alley scene. I'm sorry, I just couldn't buy it. It was ridiculous to me. That's when DDL goes way to over the top for my tastes and I just started laughing when he was chasing the preacher all over the place with a bowling alley and making him preach about how he was a hypocrite. I think it was a good concept in the script but it's so nuts it reminded me a bit of when Pacino went all crazy in Heat.

 The emperor has no clothes.I actually liked it better than you did, but I sure didn't think it as an all-time great.

I've got it nestled between Bacon and Natural C-cups at number 8 on my All Time Best 500 Anything EVAH List

Just saw this for the first time last night - I thought the movie itself dragged a bit, especially in the beginning. But it will be a tremendous tragedy if DDLewis fails to win best actor - I was transfixed to the screen watching him. Also, the score was the best I have heard in a movie in a buttlong time.

I think DDLewis will win best actor and the movie will win best score and possibly best cinematography.

A must see on the big screen purely because of the scenery shots, the score, and DDL's eyes on a 40+ foot screen.

Saw this just yesterday and have to agree that the last scene was a bit over the top. DDL should win best actor. He was good, but if comparing it to Javier Bardem's role in No Place for Old Men (i know, Bardem is technically a Supporting Actor), Bardem was a solid 10 (I was riveted to my seat when he appeared on the screen), DDL was a 5...IMO. Good flick though. I agree that the score was awesome, so was the cinematography.

Like I said, he was very good, but I just didn't have the same enthusiasm for his character as I did with Bardem's character. I guess I tend to agree with some that have said that because he really faced no formidable rivals, it lessened it for me...

A 5/10 for DDL?That's crazy talk...He was phenomenal in a role that I don't think ANY other actor could have pulled off...
A critic I like from the San Francisco Chronicle doesn't like Lewis' performance because he says that Lewis is just mimicking John Huston. I just don't see it. He sounds like Huston. But Huston had such a great voice, I don't know why that's a bad thing.
