Woke teachers want Shakespeare cut from curriculum: 'This is about White supremacy'

By James Varney

The crown teachers once put on William Shakespeare now lies uneasy upon his head as the English playwright comes under assault from teachers who fault his unwoke attitudes regarding race, sexuality, gender and class.

For the new breed of teachers, Shakespeare is seen less as an icon of literature and more as a tool of imperial oppression, an author who should be dissected in class or banished from the curriculum entirely.

“This is about white supremacy and colonization,” declared the teachers who founded #DisruptTexts.
  ......

Lord, what fools these mortals be!

People spend a lot of time trying to divert attention away from this issue by insinuating, with various humor devices or those outright stated, that this sort of politicking diverts attention away from real issues like climate change and income inequality. Thing is, is there a greater issue than the education of the citizenry and what texts and methods should be used to educate? If you're of the Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston bent, and you believe that children are the future, then these fights and attention given to the radical left about censorious behavior and curriculum substitution make sense on a very real and not abstracted level at all. So for every joke downplaying this, one is actually denying the real march of the radical left through our consciousness and school curriculum, two very important things. The devastating identity politics critique offered up by so many in our multicultural world has already eroded, if not thoroughly destroyed and annihilated, some fine edifices in my time on earth alone, never mind going back to the late '60s, which was when this all started.

The barbarians have been at the gates for a while. I'm personally glad there are yelling talk show hosts that bring attention to the absurdity of local politics sometimes. It's sad that we waste our energies having actual debates about this, and that sometimes the barbarians convince the seemingly "enlightened" to adopt such ridiculous wankery, but such is the case in modern America.

And this is likely happening at the richest or poorest of schools, two poles on the spectrum that are probably the most crucial when it comes to citizen education.

Having earned a BA in English Literature from a Jesuit school, in a decidedly progressive city, I approve this message.

Going to be honest, the woke culture is annoying, but at the same time, Shakespeare is boring.
Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio, a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy. He hath borne me on his back a thousand times, and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! My gorge rises at it. Here hung those lips that I have kissed I know not how oft. —Where be your gibes now? Your gambols? Your songs? Your flashes of merriment that were wont to set the table on a roar? Not one now to mock your own grinning? Quite chapfallen? Now get you to my lady’s chamber and tell her, let her paint an inch thick, to this favor she must come. Make her laugh at that.—Prithee, Horatio, tell me one thing.

That is all the Shakespeare I know. Love that moment.

And he writes really weird.  Good riddance....
I can handle the older English, it’s the subject matter that’s dull, at least to me. Romeo and Juliet is often used as an example of love, and it’s a terrible example. Everybody makes the worst decisions in the play, the relationship lasted about 3 days, and 6 people, including the couple, die as a direct result of their relationship.
