KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Tyler Thigpen, a second-year pro who set passing records as an All-American for Coastal Carolina, will start at quarterback for the Chiefs on Sunday against Atlanta.Kansas City coach Herm Edwards made the announcement Wednesday.Thigpen came in for Damon Huard last week and hit 14 of 33 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown and one interception in a 23-8 loss to the Oakland Raiders. His only other game action came in 2007 in a 24-10 loss to San Diego.
For LJ, Gonzo, and Bowe owners. how bad is this going to be?

I'm not convinced this is a bad thing for Gonzalez. Thigpen targeted him 12 times in three quarters Sunday, including twice inside the 10-yard line. Yeah, he only completed four, but it looks like Gonzo could be his safety blanket.

I just benched Bowe
I wish I could, but with Colston out Bowe is still my best option.
I understand that thigpen is well how do you say...bad. Bowe is still the teams best threat and the defense is how do you say...bad. So he will continue to get his targets and while he may not catch 10-12 for 125-150 a game 6-8 for 50-100 is a possability every week so for a PPR that is a nice #2. Throw in a touchdown here and there, you can't complain for a 2. I am sure he wasn't drafted by many to be a number 1. JMO

I know next to nothing about this Thigpen kid. It looks like he was 5 of 8 to Bowe and 4 of 12 to Gonzo (including the lone TD) against the Raiders. KC completely abandoned the run in the 2nd half - I didn't see the game but on paper this makes no sense to me.

Preseason Game 1 Thigpen was 8/16 for 133 yards, a TD and an interception.

Preseason Game 2 Thigpen was 16/27 for 174 yards, a TD and an interception. Also rushed 5 times for 35 yards.

Preseason Game 3 Thigpen was 1/5 for -5 yards and an interception. Oof.

Preseason Game 4 Thigpen was 1/7 for -5 yards. Double Oof.

Playing the Falcons has to be one of the kids better opportunities to make something happen... not that that's saying much.

Thigpen torched Davidson for 217 yards and a TD in 2004.

This kid is special.

Chiefs fans should be excited.

I would take last weeks production for the rest of the year, but I think that he will be way less consistent with Thigpen as the QB. Not much I can really do since we start 3 wrs, and is far better than my wr 3 and 4. I would just rather see Huard at qb.

What a disaster...

Gonzo should be getting receptions regardless so I have no comment i guess. But I feel for you Chiefs fans

Bowe didn't have a single catch in the first 2 drives with Huard. He finished with 6 catches for 90 yards, getting his first catch as the 1st qtr. ended. I think he will be a solid WR2 against the Falcons. Every pass went to either Bowe or Gonzo. I think they'll both be ok.

Weird hear say here. On atlanta sportstalk when discussing the guy one of the announcers mentioned that David Greene (who played with him is SEA, mebbe KC, don't recall) said that this kid has a CANNON and that the chiefs will prolly throw some deep looks. I'm not benching bowe. The Falcons CBs are DIRT

I tell you what -- he can't be any worse than the quarterbacking we've seen over the past two weeks. It wouldn't surprise me if things improve. Either way, at least change it up and give them a chance for a new direction.I like the move, for the Chiefs and for fantasy.

I agree w/the above posters about gonzalez --- I'd think it would help him, or at least not hurt.

are there any kc homers in here who can explain this?

because I'm kind of surprised huard isn't filling in for croyle, unless he got concussed this past weekend.

Herm says he's doing this because he wants to see what the kid has. He says he's got a bunch of young kids and he wants them to play and gain experience. He's also starting 2 rookies at CB this week. It's not like he has Sage Rosenfels to fall back on. He's got basically nothing at QB and he wants to see who he has. He knows what he's got in Huard as he watched that mess all last year. Croyle is hurt.So he's got a guy that tore it up in college and he did a few things at the end of the game last week. At least this is what he said in his press conference today.

Why don't the Chiefs do the obvious thing and put Larry Johnson at QB? They could run the same 3 plays all day long:

pass to Bowe

pass to Gonzales

run by Johnson

As a KC fan my entire 29 years.....norn and raised in KC......and I am to the point where it makes me genuinely sad to see.

3 QBs in 3 games? Only happened three other times in NFL history.

KC is at that point where nothing will change until Carl Peterson and Herman Edwards are gone. I liked Edwards when he came....was a winning HC, and had KC coaching ties. But he inherited an ancient, declining team, and then is taking the meaning of "youth movement" and going to the extreme. It is obvious to everyone I talk to that the goal is not to win games now -- the goal is to find out who can play --- which is fine unless you are too stubborn to admit that your QB (Brodie or Tyler) are not NFL-caliber QBs. Damon Huard is no Peyton Manning, but he is a serviceable QB.

sigh.....

Should I care anymore?

It looks like John Abraham decided he is going to play this year. He is leading the NFL in sacks. Do you guys think he adds to his totals on Sunday?

Its amazing how good this guy is when he wants to be. In his contract season for the Jets he was a beast, other times he was an absolute bum. I'll never get over him pouting on the side lines of the Jets-Steelers game because he had a sore hamstring. Herm even supported him what a joke. There is no way in f**k Junior Seau, Ray Lewis, or Vraebel miss that game. Soft!

Did you guys read the Q&A with Herm? It's ... surreal:

http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2008/09/17/qa...m_edwards__917/

Some excerpts:

Q: Was this the plan all along? Were you always going to start him?

EDWARDS: “I don’t know if it was the plan all along. It’s just where we’re at right now. It’s a decision we made as a staff. It’s week to week. Hopefully, he can hang in there and play well and get us a win and stay in there. That’s how we’re looking at it.”

Q: Why does he give you a better chance than Damon?

EDWARDS: “We just look at where we’re at as a football team. We’re constantly trying to evaluate players. We’re trying to grow a quarterback. Well, when do you grow em? They can’t grow unless they play. He needs to play. We know where Damon’s at. We know who he is. He’s a good quarterback.”

Q: You said last week it wouldn’t be fair to start Tyler last week in the home opener. Is he that much further along this week?

EDWARDS: “We just felt that Damon was number two and it was right for him to start at home. We had this situation last week where we were going to try to play a couple of quarterbacks. Damon got a little nicked and we couldn’t put him back in the game. Tyler played, took us down for a late touchdown, did some things pretty well at the end, so we decided to give him a shot this week.”

Bump up Atlanta defense

Bump up Michael Turner
Was about to post the same. Guy in my league picked them up, thought it was a pretty savvy move. They have aggressive, but young, corners and Milloy should be playing.Maybe Jamaal Anderson can get a real, live sack.

That's harsh, but he does have a history of that, as Jets fans can attest to.
