Things that are inexplicably expensive (1 Viewer)

Costco has great mattresses and much cheaper. Just the basics, no headboard/footboard. Always looks at Costco first for such pricey items.

I just bought a queen size for $200 from mattressfirm

why are people buying such expensive beds?
I don't know.  I did lay on it though and it was pretty damn awesome.  The zero gravity setting would be especially nice for watching TV in bed before going to sleep.

This is the opposite of inexplicably expensive.  People who need intracranial surgery generally really need it -- they're not having surgery just for fun.  They're willing to pay almost any price for it, and coincidentally they're generally not the ones who are picking up the bill.  There are a very limited number of people who are qualified to perform this type of surgery, and again, people tend to be willing to pay top-dollar for "the best" because of the immediate downside consequences if things go wrong.  So you take a group of consumers who are almost completely insensitive to price, and pair them up with a small number of extremely well-trained providers who face no particular competition, and you're surprised that the price gets kind of high?
Priced high?  Not surprised.  Priced the same as a brand new luxury car?  For 4 hours work with minimal material costs?  I just can't fathom the justification that the hospitals have given the insurance companies.  Doesn't someone have an incentive somewhere to rein that in?

Another one is parking.
Depends on where you are. I've been in a mostly empty parking garage charging $10/hr and thought, "That's ridiculous." And I've also circled around downtown blocks in some cities looking for a street parking spot but none can be found because they're like $2/hr.

In the market for a new mattress. Why on earth are these things thousands of dollars?  I'm just talking about regular mattresses without all the sleep number memory foam bells and whistles.

Also, printer ink.

And glasses frames.

Great podcast here about the ridiculous prices of mattresses.

I'll add diamonds to the list. By far the most plentiful gem on earth. If Debeers didn't artificially limit the supply, they'd be almost worthless.

Christmas wreaths.

We were looking for 36 inch wreaths to put outside on the house. $150. Each. Minimum. WTF? And Christmas lights aren't cheap either.

One of my sons did a science experiment a few years ago on batteries....which batteries lasted the longest.  The winner in both AA and AAA categories was?  Batteries from the dollar store.  Don't go anywhere else for batteries now.  Best elementary school science experiment ever.

   I can't help you here.   I guess you can stick to the $5 cards.
$8 +... Papyrus. Of course I don't do cards for everyone, only close fam members and best friends. They get top notch. Others get a nice ecard. To me that's better than doing a dollar store 2 for $1 deals. Nothing screams CHEAP louder than a card that looks it..

Try Leesa mattresses.  Not inexpensive, but reasonably priced and pretty good reviews.  Got one for our daughter and it's very comfy...don't need box springs with it either.

Also:
The commission a real estate agent takes by default.

My wife has made her own with the branches we cut off the tree we get each year.

$8 for a card that someone is just going to throw away right after reading it if they even read it.  That's awesome.

Actually the people that get these from me are the ones that keep it for keepsake. Like I said, I don't get it for everyone. Mom, Dad, Bro, bffs, and a select few more keep them. I do as well from people who mean a lot to me.

Beef Jerky
This is a great one.  My son is Type 1 Diabetic so when it comes to holidays and his other siblings are getting swamped with candies and treats, we try to load him up with Jerky as an alternative treat.  I think they must put cocaine in there or something.  Very expensive.

Fast food. I don't eat much of it but the other day I went to McDonalds for a filet of fish, fries and drink for close to $8! WTF? I remember when FOF was $1. Nothing's changed with it. Burger King Whopper now is over $5 for just the sandwich! Jeebus.
