Vikes may target Fitzgerald

February 8

St. Paul Pioneer Press (scroll down) (registration required): "It will be interesting to see whether the Vikings, seeking reasons for season-ticket holders to renew, try to trade their No. 7 overall pick in April's draft, plus a player or two, for Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald Jr. of Minneapolis."

Anyone from Minny hear any rumbling on this topic? As a Fitz dynasty owner, I am hoping that this is just writers BS.

sounds like pure speculation, but even if true, this says nothing about AZ being interested.

That's about the FIFTH time in the last two months that that crap has been floated in the local rags. It has as much of a chance of happening as Brad Childress dating Paris Hilton.

The only reason they throw it out is because Fitzgerald has local ties and they're just trying to sell a paper or twelve.

There are also rumors that LF is very unhappy that Denny Green got canned. They were supposedly close. This adds fuel to the fire. And, of course, it is the Bidwells and they have been known to do some strange things.STILL WON'T HAPPEN!! AZ WILL NOT TRADE LF - AT LEAST NOT THIS YEAR.

If it makes your team better why not do it? They have two other good WR's.

The better question is - Would you sign Boldin/Fitz to 40-50 million dollar extensions? That's a ton of money tied up in WRs. Sure they are worth it, but most teams don't pay their starting WRs that kind of money.(wayne/harrison being the only exception I can think of, and do to it, they let edge go)

It sounds like a Sid Hartman dream but he writes for the Minneapolis paper?

I doubt this has much legs.

Many high-powered Os have paid for two WRs. Minnesota paid Carter and Moss. St. Louis paid Bruce and Holt, Indy pays Harrison and Wayne. Oakland tried paid Moss and Porter, but it didn't really work out for them. Washington paid a lot for Moss and Randle-el (not in the same league though). Detroit paid Rogers, Roy Williams and Mike Williams. Seattle paid Jackson, Burleson and Branch.

The question is, how would it make the Cardinals better?I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just doubtful that they could give up one of the top 5 receivers in the NFL and make their team better with the #7 pick and some other player.Fitz + Boldin + Leinart could be a great offense for quite a while if they can get that offensive line to just be average.

Many?5 in the last 10 years? And most of them were train wrecks. If you bring up the Lions drafting 3 straight WRs in the top 10 as an example supporting your case, you don't even need to reply.

I'm not sure investing 16M cap space on 2 starting WRs is the ideal model for success.

You're basically creating Matt Millens dream scenario. When I want to build a franchise, I'd follow the Patriots no WRs system over the Lions investing the franchise in WRs.

I believe it's been Charlie Walters each time too. I think it's about once a month that he puts it in there, and each time I :goodposting:

Sorry, it wasn't an exhaustive list. As for disaster, Minny was a perennial challenger with Moss and Carter. If not for Gary Anderson's only missed FG of the season against Atlanta in the playoffs, Minny would have played Denver in 1998 (and I think they would've spanked 'em, personally).

St. Louis won the superbowl with Holt and Bruce, and has challenged for the division crown pretty much every year since drafting Holt.

Indy has won the superbowl and challenged for it every year since drafting Wayne.

Seattle just signed both guys this year, and went deep into the playoffs. Prior to these two guys they were paying Koren Robinson and Darrel Jackson.

The only disaster was Detroit. Other teams that have recently invested multiple 1st-rounders at QB include Jacksonville and Atlanta.

I'm not saying that it's the best way to build a team, but neither is letting young talent walk away. In recent years I can only think of a handful of top talent WRs that have moved, and its been character/personality issues each time - Owens, Moss, Keyshawn.

I will start off by saying that I don't think it will happen. But IMO I think it makes sense, depending on the other player involved. I think that if AZ can get #7, and a good young player, I think that it would improve their team more than Fitz would. I think that B Johnson could step in and be a very good #2 WR, next to Boldin. As for Minny, I think that the addition of Fitz would immediately help their Offense, and if the cost of the extra player isn't too high then it would improve their team overall. As much as I agree with the fact that Fitz is a great player, I think if I were AZ I would def think about it. As for Minn, it would depend on what else besides the #7 pick I would have to give up.

So who's the magical good young player that minnesota is giving up and that Arizona would benefit from?

I'll bet there aren't more than 10 players in the league who can't be traded for the #7 overall and some "good young player". Want Brian Urlacher? I'll give you #7 overall and Jonathan Vilma. Want Dwight Freeny? I'll give you Shawn Merriman and #7 overall. It's sort of a stupid game...

The absolute ONLY scenario that I can see is if Arizona was interested in Fred Smoot, since the Vikings are ready to dump him. The Cardinals need help in the secondary big time.

I'm not convinced Smoot + #7 = Fitz (I think Fitz is worth more) but the Cardinals aren't exactly a model in roster management.

But if the Vikings were to acquire Fitz for the #7+Smoot, I would  to the organization. It would make me a happy fan.

While I agree that Smoot + #7 do not equal Fitz. I do think that it would be a good trade for AZ. With pick #5 and #7 they could land 2 stud young players. (Thomas, L Brown, Anderson, Branch, etc) Also, I think that Smoot and Rolle would be a formidable duo of corners. I think that it would improve AZ team overall, even though they would lose the bet player in the deal.

Wouldn't it be just as easy to make a similar deal to move up a few spots for Calvin Johnson? I realize he's not a Minnesota kid, but wouldn't that be a more likely scenario?

When asked if they were an item, Childress said he was checking to see if Hilton could be a Tight End on his team, but found out she was only a Wide Reciever."
