I was surfing the channels last night and stopped on a replay of the 1989 game between WVU and Notre Dame. The first thing that I noticed was the lack of advertisements. Not sure if you have noticed but today, every NFL game has a ton of advertisements. The Staples pre-game show. The FedEx coin toss. The UPS player of the game... You have ads in the stands, an ad naming the stadium, ads on the field goal nets, ads on players, ads for every first down, ads for notable plays (ie the bonehead stat of the game has been brought to you by...). and don't forget all of the commercials!

Have all of this impacted the game of football? It was so refreshing to watch a game without all of this distraction. I understand that the NFL is $$$$ so why not advertise if you are a company. But when does it go too far?

Couldn't agree more, nothing is sacred in a modern consumer society. Over advertising makes me avoid their crappy products. But I guess its better than paying even more for the things we DO want

I think a lot of the ads orginated from the Super Bowl. Once advertisers noticed how big it was to advertise during the Super Bowl, everything else followed.

I understand that advertising brings a local game free. But what about the Sunday Ticket? I don't have it but do they air commericals even though you pay good money to watch?

Sirius has mostly commercial free radio with the exceptions of a few stations. The NFL Channel is one of the exceptions.

Personally, I can't stand all of the advertisements. I liked it when each stadium had it's own name, unique to their situation... Mile High, Three Rivers, etc. Now it's University of Phoenix Online Stadium. That sucks!

Advertising has been a part of sports for as long time. It is just more pervasive now. I am sure when Wrigley Field was named, there were people up in arms about that seeing how the chewing gum company put their name on it. Today we do not even think twice about it because it has been a part of our culture for years.

I agree that the computer generated first down line brought to you by XYZ company is a bit over the top but we are a nation of consumers.
