Getting the hell out of CT this weekend and seeking better weather, I could reach any of these in an 8 hour drive; which should I choose: Newport News, VA Beach, Raleigh or Cape Hatteras?
Mostly want to walk the dogs and eat bbq. Will be there for the Superbowl, so will probably watch that at a local bar.

I've only spent time in Raleigh, the others only driven through. I think @Leeroy Jenkins is around there and we had a good time last visit, but no long walks on the beach there.

Ice storm's rolling through the Mid-Atlantic tonight and tomorrow. Saturday may have some crappy weather, too.

I didn't vote, by the way. I don't know enough about the areas you listed. Isn't Newport News a rougher area? Just by asking that it shows how much I know. Very little.

You sure about eight hours? My drive from D.C. to Connecticut was about that, and those are points further south, I think.
That's what Google maps is telling me. And I diligently plan and avoid big metros during rush hours, but that's tough along the 95 corridor. I can leave early enough to get through the NY area mayhem before it gets going, but that still leaves Philadelphia and DC and everything in between.

Hatters is hard to get to. 5-6 hrs from
DC. It’s not like going to duck or kitty hawk. So far. And absolutely dead this time of year.

Newport News sucks every day of the year. It’s an excellent place to get mugged though.

So Va beach or Raleigh. I don’t know Raleigh. But Va beach can be ok. It’s dead this time of year but they have some decent restaurants. Hotels are really cheap. Not much to do overall but you can make it work.

ETA … You might just wanna stop in Williamsburg. There’s stuff going on there since college is in session. Plenty of historical stuff.

Spot on with this analysis. If you do by or to Williamsburg, stop at Pierce's Pit BBQ. Easy access from interstate 64.

Went through VA hoping to meet up with Uruk for some BBQ, but he was sick. Ended up going on down 81 and staying in Roanoke. I like it here, but looks could this week.. I'll think we'll head to Atlanta Sunday, then head SE to MS or Ga coast. I'd like to go to Brunswick, but we're looking for somewhere to hold up another week and I don't know if it can keep me entertained that long. Out may be another week or two before we end up heading back NE.

One of my friends runs the Food Hut next to Golden Cactus Brewing in downtown Roanoke. Outdoor spot for some food and beer, since mentioned having dog with you.
