Thomas Jones hobbled today (1 Viewer)

In the most horrific and famous moment in the film, Annie cripples Paul, crushing his legs between a block of wood and a sledge hammer, which she informs him is called "hobbling".

Jones should be back for Jets' season opener

Although Jets coach Eric Mangini refused to elaborate on Thomas Jones' injury beyond calling it a "lower leg" affliction, Jones' agent offered good news for fans of the team and its new running back.

Drew Rosenhaus told The Associated Press that Jones has a strained right calf muscle and hopes to return in time for the season opener Sept. 9.

"He had an MRI on the right calf and it was determined that he has what is essentially a strain of the calf muscle," Rosenhaus said after speaking with Jones Monday. "He said the doctor was vague in terms of how much time he would miss, but it would probably be a week-to-week injury."

Jones was on the practice field but not practicing for both workouts Monday. He had his leg wrapped from above the ankle to below the knee during the morning session, but was without any support or compression on the area in the evening. During the workouts he participated in cardio and strength exercises with other injured players.

Jones was injured Sunday when, while planting himself to block linebacker Brad Kassel, his right leg failed him and he crumpled to the ground. He immediately grabbed for the back of his leg and removed his sock and shoe, leading some to speculate about a high ankle sprain. He was able to walk off under his own power Sunday -- though with a noticeable limp -- and spent the rest of that practice exercising with the other injured players. The limp was decidedly less pronounced Monday.

The Jets have a policy against speaking on injuries, so when Mangini was asked about Jones at his daily news conference Monday he was vague, grudgingly conceding the detail of "lower leg" only late into the session.

"I can tell you that he is working extremely hard, and he'll be back as quickly as he can," Mangini said. "Thomas has a pretty strong track record."

The Jets policy also prevents players who don't practice from speaking with the media, so Jones was not made available to the press Monday or Sunday.

Jones ran eight times in the first 12 offensive snaps of Friday's preseason opener against the Falcons. Although Mangini would not rule him out for Friday's game against the Vikings -- "Really, I expect him as soon as he can go," the coach said -- the update from Rosenhaus almost certainly precludes his involvement. Rosenhaus said Jones told him he was "confident he would be ready" for the opener against the Patriots.

Jones is coming off back-to-back 1,200-yard seasons with the Bears, including 1,335 in 2005, and 112 yards in Super Bowl XLI. After a slow start to his career in Arizona and Tampa Bay, Jones seemed poised to continue his success as a Jet. Teammates marveled at his weight-room dedication and Mangini continually lauded his work ethic.

The Jets traded for Jones in March, swapping second-round picks with the Bears for a player they believed would resolve their woes at running back. With Curtis Martin set to retire and a company of inefficient running backs at their disposal last season, the Jets were ranked 30th in yards per carry (3.5) in the NFL. They immediately signed Jones to a four-year, $20-million contract and had a legitimate backfield threat for the first time since injuries began to slow Martin down during the 2005 season.

With Jones sidelined, second-year back Leon Washington has been taking first-team reps. Rookies Alvin Banks and Danny Ware and fourth-year player Tony Hollings have been sharing backup duties. The Jets were already thin with experienced backs because Cedric Houston left the team on the eve of training camp, telling people he didn't have the heart to play anymore.

"With the running backs, there's been some tremendous opportunity," Mangini said. "Some guys have done well with that opportunity, some guys haven't."

Jones is a solid runner. I think he's going to be a nice upgrade for the Jets. That said, the Bears made the right move in dealing Jones and contrary to popular belief got about what he was worth. He's a lot closer to the middle, in terms on NFL backs, than the top. He's highly overrated around here which probably stems from the last thing people saw - the playoffs. He was undeniably great in the playoffs, but towards the end of the regular season he started to lose carries and Benson preformed just as well or better. I think what you got from Jones the last couple of years is a lot closer to his ceiling than anything else.
This may be true but he's better than Cedric Benson. It seems to me that he "lost" carries to Benson in order to preserve Jones for the playoffs. They didn't want a dinged up #1 RB.
Where did you get this from? I've never heard anything like that and I doubt that was the case.Benson was receiving more carries because he both complimented Jones running style well as a change of pace and he was effective. Benson had a higher DVOA than Jones last year and the only reason he finished slightly behind Jones in DPAR was because Jones got twice as many opportunities. Jones certainly didn't separate himself from Benson last year.

Not good for the J E T S here.. I like Little Leon but Touchdown Thomas was brought in to shoulder the load and this is not the way I wanted to see this starting..

Cedric Houston where are you?

ESPN is saying week to week.
I saw that as well. That obviously sounds a lot worse than "day-to-day".I feel comfortable with Leon in there for the time being, but they need TJ in there do to a lot of the heavy lifting/grinding out yards. Fortunately, the season is still a month away.

This guy has always had an injury almost every year in this league. And the only time he has looked good is behind the under-rated Bears OL that has perennial probowlers in Kreutz and Reuben Brown and solid OTs in John Tait and Fred Miller, with Des Clark one of the best blocking TEs in the league.

Yet, everyone seems to think the Bears made the wrong move letting him go in his final year for the draft pick compensation.
TJ carried some of the worst offenses in recent NFL history during his time in Chicago and also led them to the Super Bowl. Why so bitter?
Sorry if I sounded bitter. I actually love TJ. But the facts are the only time he has been productive in this league is behind the Bears OL. And he has always been out some games every year since he entered his league. So, letting him go after seeing how well Benson did last year in the 2nd half (against even tough run Ds like Minny, NE) was the right thing to do in my mind.
Another way to put it is that TJ has only been UNproductive in this league when he was playing int he RB graveyard called Arizona. 4.6 ypc on 136 carries in a committee in Tampa strikes me as productive, especially since nobody was going to hand him the starting job after the Arizona years.Jones is not a top fantasy back by any stretch, but he clearly has the capability of putting up some 1300 yards and 10 TDs. That said, I don't expect him to have that opportunity in NY, since I don't think he's going to get more than 275 carries.

The way they are talking about this in the local media is it sounds like he may miss the opener. It wouldnt surprise me in the least. That being said who do the Jets play in week 1?

they play the pats at the meadowlands. I´ll take a calf strain over what was initially reported as a high ankle sprain. I thinking he´ll be ready to go week one.

Yep knowing the opponent I think Jones does everything in his power to play.

Good point (counter-point?). Assuming the injury isn't serious, he's going in drafts about where he should IMO.

Mangini, interviewed on WFAN a half hour ago, is still calling Jones day-to-day. I understand he is big on coachspeak but, fwiw, he made it clear he was not the one who said week-to-week and also said he would not rule out him playing in the NEXT game (would shock me if he that happened, but he said it...) The audio will probably be on wfan.com later under Mike and the Mad Dog.

Any update on Jones here?
He's performing running, high stepping, and etc type of drills on the sideline while his teammates are practicing. They say he will be ready for opening day but as a Jets fan and season ticket holder .... I'm concerned. Any injury that happens that is not due to contact is much more alarming then one that does.

It seems to me like he would be ready. I think he wants to show that he's "who they thought they were..." (in my Dennis Green voice).

Jets running back Thomas Jones, who is battling a calf injury, is moving much better and is expected to play against the Patriots in Week 1, according to the New York Daily News. He's still unable to practice, but his rehab program has intensified.

I think Jones will be ready to go week one but Jones' injury sure did open the door for Leon to get first team reps and did a lot to down grade Jones' value in fantasy this year and for the future.Leon is going to get plenty of touches every game as he is the teams most dangerous player to score from anywhere on the field.Jones, and Washignton are going to be a good 1-2 RB punch, but fantasy players have to realize that Jones is not going to get the bulk of the carries this season.

Fred Taylor/Jones-Drew situation from 2006? Will Leon be a 2nd round pick next year?
I suppose it's possible, but I think Jones-Drew runs with a lot more power than Washington does, meaning more work in the red zone as compared with Leon. But Washington is certainly a big play threat and a great change-of-pace & passing situation RB.

according to Fantasy index , they were finding reports that say the calf injury could very well be an Achilles problem, and that is perhaps the reason Mangini has been so mum about things.
