So far all signs point to TJones. Hopefully you're not relying on either him or Benson as a starting RBI need to know who is getting the love in Chicago this year?
I agree that TJones seems more likely, but I don't see how you can say "all signs point to TJones" when Benson was named the starter in training camp. This is IMHO the most unclear RB situation, and I would love it if it was cleared up soon...So far all signs point to TJones. As long as it shakes out by week 4, when I have to pick one to start in a bye week, I'm OK.Fair enough. TJ is the players’ favorite and CB has not enamored himself to this team or coaches with some of his actions (leaving the field during a preseason game). Now that we are done with that - Here is the lowdown. Management investing major money in CB and wants to see some type of return on their investment and in the NFL some times money can speak loudest.I need to know who is getting the love in Chicago this year?
Yeah, his numbers were pretty unconvincing at Texas.I am very confident that once again, TJ will be THE MAN in Chicago. I'll even go further out and say Chris Benson will continue to be a bust. Never sold on him even when he played at UT.
but, you need to believe RKMoney, he says he is from Austin ........Yeah, his numbers were pretty unconvincing at Texas.I am very confident that once again, TJ will be THE MAN in Chicago. Damn! I'm too slow. I'll take 1,000,000,000 to 1 that Thomas Jones starts at RB in Chicago in 2006 more times than anyone named Chris Benson.I loved Chris Benson at Texas!Yeah, his numbers were pretty unconvincing at Texas.I am very confident that once again, TJ will be THE MAN in Chicago. Added the necessary qualifier to your sentence.Benson may well be the better back, period.... but we don't know that yet.I tend to think that Benson is the better back (FOR RON TURNER'S SYSTEM)
I believe Chicago plays Green Bay in week one. Enough said!!Since Cedric is not even healthy at this point, TJ will be the opening day starter. His performance on the field will judge if Benson has a shot to steal the job. If TJ is playing like he has for the last couple of season's he'll remain the starter. If he struggles, well Cedric will have his chance to show he's not a bust. For now TJ is the man.
LINK?It was thought that Benson might play Thursday night in the final preseason game (8/31), but it makes sense to hold him out of a meaningless game in which very few of the starters typically play. Now, he gets an extra ten days of rest for the shoulder before the opener on 9/10. If he can handle a full practice load in the week leading up to the first game, I see no reason why he won't at least share duty with Jones.Since Cedric is not even healthy at this point, TJ will be the opening day starter.
i read somewhere that he would be listed as doubtful for this weeks game. I have to get back to work, but i can find the link at break. 48?Let's start a new TJ Vs. BEnson thread every 48 hours. That'll be good.
I saw him play just about all his games for UT, this isn't fantasy where ONLY the numbers matter.Yeah, his numbers were pretty unconvincing at Texas.I am very confident that once again, TJ will be THE MAN in Chicago. I remember Benson being on the cover of ESPN magazine before the draft and people had question marks about his attitude as if that was some sort of shocking news.Damn! I'm too slow. Chris Benson - wasn't he related to that housekeeper...no...wait, Benson was his first name...nevermind.
wow, great example. i think that pretty much settles it.For the people who strictly go by numbers from college and think that's impressive, I've got two words for you:AndreWare

Cedric Benson is expected to miss Thursday's preseason game. There's no sense risking injury in the final meangingless preseason game. "I don't know exactly when he'll be back. He's making progress, but he's not there yet," coach Love Smith. It's uncertain who will start Chicago's opener, but Thomas Jones looks like the slight favorite.

Are the pre-season injuries to Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson affecting their play?
Benson's shoulder injury hindered his progress or else he probably would have carried more than 21 times in the first two games, and possibly opened the season as the starter, but he looked healthy bowling over Boss Bailey last Sunday. Jones looks the same as he did last year but has been limited because teams simply have committed themselves to stopping the Bears' running game. The more downfield plays Rex Grossman makes to either Bernard Berrian or Muhsin Muhammad, the more dangerous Jones will become as he gets back into the rhythm with his offensive line. He did miss a significant part of training camp, which might account for part of the slow start, but the below-average numbers probably have more to do with the way defenses have attacked the Bears with eight players "in the box,'' more often than not.
In my opinion, it seems like the fans and, more importantly, the players all feel that Thomas Jones is the best running back on the Bears. That being said, what are the chances of him signing an extension and the Bears trading Cedric Benson?
If there was a running back to be dealt, the Bears would have traded one in the off-season when teams called about Jones. But they need him this season until Benson proves he can stay healthy and become a more well-rounded NFL back. Next year, obviously, the dynamic likely changes no matter what Jones' production level is this season. Benson will be entering Year 3 and still could be looking for that breakout season his $16 million bonus portended while Jones will be 28 –- middle-aged as far as NFL running backs go. Unless something unforeseen occurs this season that indicates Benson is a high-maintenance bust, Benson is about as untouchable for potential trade partners as any offensive player on the roster.
That is interesting.Couple of interesting tidbits here:

WB, GB.And I agree, I watched the game.he whiffed on multiple blitzes?????????i was at the game. we barely got anywhere near Grossman all day long. one of the laments here in GB was about our AWFUL pass rush.
TJ whiffed on one. Seem to remember he did on another as well. Didn't get Rex killed and the Bears won, that's all that matters to mehe whiffed on multiple blitzes?????????i was at the game. we barely got anywhere near Grossman all day long. one of the laments here in GB was about our AWFUL pass rush.
BENSON-OWNER ALERT! BENSON-OWNER ALERT! BENSON-OWNER ALERT!Thomas Jones just seems to go down much easier than benson. These little ankle tackles that Jones can't break drives me nuts. Haven't seen a lot of benson, but he seems to be able to shed more tacklers than Jones. As for the pass blocking. Did you see jones week 1? He whiffed on multiple blitzers. He had a terrible game pass blocking. IMO the bears are just looking for the right opportunity to start benson without pissin off some of the players.

Get off the crazy pills!I do agree that the Bears WILL start Benson at some point and are just looking for an opportunity to do so. You all saw how Grossman was worked into the starting job despite the playoffs looming in the horizon and Rex having not played much the previous 2 seasons. As a TJones owner I can say...f*** Cedric Benson.Thomas Jones just seems to go down much easier than benson. I thought I was in FFA for a minute thereThomas Jones just seems to go down much easier...
I agree. I found that post laugh. Jones will start picking it up as soon as teams realize Grossman is the real McCoy and the Bears have a legitimate passing attack. Benson has been even more unimpressive in mop up duty in the Bears first 2 wins. Get over it Benson owners. Thomas Jones is the Bears starter this season, and unless he really goes south he will remain so all the way through the post season and probably on their way to the Super Bowl. I am not a Bears fan, but it is clear to me they are the best team in the NFC right now and will only get better as the weather gets nasty. I do believe Benson is a good runner but not the all around back (as of yet) that Thomas Jones has proven to be since his arrival with the Bears. Jones is a veteran leader on this offense and is a major part of there goal to a championship. 10 carries for 25 yards is not going to take anyones job any time soonGet off the crazy pills!I do agree that the Bears WILL start Benson at some point and are just looking for an opportunity to do so. Bears are 2-0 and probably looking like the strongest team in the NFC. No reason for a change. Lovie Smith is playing real football here, not fantasy. Why take out a veteran leader and disrupt chemistry?I too feel that it is inevitable that Benson takes over for Thomas Jones as the starter. The tough part to answer is when? It may be this season, it may be next season. I own both of these guys on different teams so looking at it as an owner of both on different teams I still feel there is a strong possibility that Benson takes over later this season. If this happens I think Benson could be huge since he could become the starter later of the season without having taken a beating for a full season. Anybody think part of Larry Johnson's huge run last year was helped at least somewhat by not having to carry the full burdon of carries at the start of the year? I think that helped him some. In my leagues I would be trying to add Benson if he is reasonably cheap right now.
I don't think anyone has a crystal ball and knows when Benson will take the job. The fact is, it is clear Lovie wants Thomas Jones in there right now, and as long as he produces he will not sit him. If the Bears keep winning and it sure looks like they will win at least 12 games this year, Benson will not crack the starting lineup. I do see Benson getting in a good 7-10 carries a game. He is a battering ram and will be a great assest to run clock as teams are worn out in the 4th quarter. But the meaningful money carries are going to TJ until he either get's hurt or goes in the tank. The later will in all likleyhood not happen. As for injury, we know he has missed time every year, but that is also no gurantee.I too feel that it is inevitable that Benson takes over for Thomas Jones as the starter. I tried to make this argument all offseason but the Benson owners and others absolutely jumped all over me.Consider it fact: Thomas Jones will not lose this job as long as (1) he is productive and (2) the Bears are winning. Unless and until he is hurt, or bad, or they start losing, he will be the starter.Bears are 2-0 and probably looking like the strongest team in the NFC. No reason for a change. Yep. And it doesn't help Benson that he is not liked/respected in the locker room...I'd like to see T Jones put up a big game. He really is in a nice spot-great team, great defense, good lineI tried to make this argument all offseason but the Benson owners and others absolutely jumped all over me.Consider it fact: Thomas Jones will not lose this job as long as (1) he is productive and (2) the Bears are winning. Exactly. Benson owners over at Antsports ( my home) were laughing at me last year when I drafted TJ in a few dynasty leagues( and again this year I grabbed him in a new dyansty draft at 6.10) and this year when I stood my ground about TJ being the "man" in the Windy city. I traded for Benson in one of my dynasty leagues that I have TJ. So I am not anti Benson. But reality is reality. And yes sometimes teams draft guy's , pay them a ton of money, and they never pan out, or they wait for their turn ala Larry JohnsonI tried to make this argument all offseason but the Benson owners and others absolutely jumped all over me.Consider it fact: Thomas Jones will not lose this job as long as (1) he is productive and (2) the Bears are winning. So RN, do you still think my projection of Thomas Jones getting around 300 carries and Benson getting 150 are that far off?Couple of interesting tidbits here:
