Thou Shalt Know Thine Scoring System (1 Viewer)

This is an offshoot of the 5 Keys To Being A Better Drafter thread.

Everyone agrees that knowing your scoring system is vital, but I don't quite understand how you go about the knowing.

It would seem that there are two factors at work:

1. Player's value relative to each other across all positions.

2. Player's value relative to each other within their position.

I've always just eyeballed it but that's only taken me so far.

Do I need to use math?

And if so are there maths that won't destroy my admittedly feeble brain?

I rely a lot on MFL's sort by PPG feature. It gives you a more accurate picture of where a player ranks against his peers, and a very clear picture of the scoring curve at the position (range of starter scoring, span b/w WR1/WR2/WR3, depth of bench, and so on)

I'll admit to having similar questions. I am in a .5 PPR league and last year a leaguemate made a public revelation in that the QBs were monsters in our format (+6 pt TDs).

in 2008/2009 season the peaks of positions were:

6 QBs over 400 points

11 RBs over 200 points

2 WRs over 200 points

4 TEs over 100 points

6 Ds over 200 points

Two things really stuck out: 1) QBs double the points of everything else. 2)and Ds score higher than WRs.

Don't get me wrong I am a fanatical follower of the VBD system and understand that it is not about how many points one position scores over the the other positions but rather how they perform respective of their own position. However, when you look at total number of players in those tiers, combined with a subjective value of consistency, a few players will start to pop out in your analysis and, surprisingly a few players will fade from importance (second tier RBs anyone?). This analysis is a blunt tool not a sharp object but it shapes your thinking in the right direction. And the best part -- No Maths Needed.

And for those statistical geeks, I recognize these point tiers are arbitrary and could have been massaged to support a predetermined conclusion. But deal.

I think that having better PPG stats for different scoring systems in the MyFBG content is something you guys should really try to add. Or being able to use your scoring system for calculating fantasy points in the data dominator.
